In the 50's and 60's, super hero fare was starting to fall out of style. To accommodate different tastes, guys like Jack Kirby started writing these epic space stories. The original Guardians of the Galaxy was part of that. However, come the 60's and 70's and super hero stuff is back in the limelight because of new characters. As such, the space stuff took a back burner (though some of the VERY best Fantastic Four and X-Men stuff deals with it). Well back in the early 2000's, Marvel decided to take a crack at it again and mix-mashed a bunch of Silver Age villains (Gamora, Drax, and Groot) together with some older heroes (Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon) and basically play it like the Odd Couple meets the A-Team. It kind of took off after that and had a decent run.

So yes... this space stuff is VERY much Marvel and a lot of it is actually pretty cool. Considering the smash it already s (95 mil on opening day IN AUGUST), we're probably going to see more space stuff. Probably get some Nova Corp stuff next.

It is. It's part of Phase 2 in their series of movies before Avengers 2, which completes the phase. There are ties with Captain America, Thor 2, and Avengers. Specifically the McGuffin that was in those three movies, as well as a re-appearance from someone in Avengers.

I wasn't sure about this one going into it. I liked the premise and the art direction, but wasn't sure about the cast, figuring it might be too "tweeny" for me to enjoy. Well, it was close. It's still worth watching (if only for NPH's performance, which is seriously the best part of the movie), but it's a bit too...tidy for me. At least, I think that's the best adjective to use. The story unfolds about the way you would expect (given the tale) though it is of course updated to make it more in line with the setting. About that, though...it's obvious that they tried to make the dialogue appeal more to the youth of 2011, but unfortunately one of the ways they do so is by inexplicably tossing in "cool" phrases from the late 80's (which strains the illusion). Anyway, the plot unfolds along the lines of the famous fairy tale, but it frequently does so in ways that seem rushed/arranged, as if they have to be at a certain part of the plot by a certain point of the movie, so at times it feels like either some scenes got cut, or they must be skipping over some lines. It's not enough to ruin the movie, but rather than the relationship building itself organically from transformation to resolution, it feels like they've subjected it to a process to artificially age it towards the conclusion, and that conclusion feels a little ... convenient/shallow.
So...it's not a bad movie, and it makes for at least one viewing, but the only way you'll probably get totally wrapped up in the movie is if you're under 20.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

I got the chance to catch this in theaters yesterday during its limited run. On the whole, I thought it was pretty fun. It had some great fight sequences and an interesting message to impart as Goku attempts to defeat Beerus, the God of Destruction. Also, with Akira Toriyama having written this, there was a greater humor element at work than it feels like there has been for a while.

Just back from this. As a fan sice I was in junior high I can say it was my favorite movie they've ever done!

Also, there was a moment in it that I have waited over 15 years to see in some form and I made a delighted sound that only anime trashl ike myself could have made.

All in all, I really liked it.

Out of curiosity, which moment was it?

It was an interesting experience for me seeing it, because it's been a long time since I've watched the series and my memories are now colored through the haze of Dragon Ball Z Abridged. For me, with how much humor Akira Toriyama really brought back, it almost has a slight DBZ Abridged vibe to it, particularly drunk Bulma.

I have been waiting forever for some confirmation that Vegeta and Bulma were married. Also, for Vegeta to get pissed for something happening to Bulma. They were my power couple as a kid and they still are as an adult when the term has changed to OTP. I was in heaven,

One of my fav parts about the managa is the humour. A lot of it got lost in the anime. :) Vegeta was friggin hilariously witty in the manga but he was kind of reduced to angry man in the show up to the Buu saga.

This is one of the best dubbed DBZ movies as well. The dub script was fantastic.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Pretty good, I quite liked it. I would've liked more development of the Winter Soldier, instead of just having him begin to regain his memories and leave the rest for a future film. But oh well.

Also, was it just me, or did ScarJo's voice sound especially scratchy in this film? I mean, her voice has always had a bit of scratchiness to it, but in here it sounded like she was recovering from a severe cold, or something.

Watched Transcendence again on sunday (wasn't my pick of what to watch), picked up on a few more things I missed the first time around, but mostly it reinforced my antipathy for the neo-luddite terrorists. My thoughts are summed up by "Spare me the preaching of a 22 ish bottle-blonde college intern who has the firmest of convictions that she is the sole, infallible protector of humanity."

But yeah, the first time I didn't pick up on the little sparkle at the end of the movie in the puddle in the garden, which only then occurred to me was in a Faraday cage. IE, the nanites in the rainwater would have flowed into the cage, but then been unable to receive the virus when it was uploaded.

So as soon as they turn the internet back on, humanity is right back in Johnny Depp's clutches. But this time he has every reason to be mad at them.
