Didn't thumbs up used to mean "kill him" and thumbs down "spare him"?
According to my half remembered watching of an episode of QI (aka the televisual equivalent of Wikipedia) thumbs up meant "kill him" & the thumb held in a closed fist meant "spare him". Thumbs up was meant to represent an unsheathed sword & the closed fist represented a sheathed sword.

I was the victim of a vicious pitbull attack today.

Edit: Just to clarify, that is me laughing my ass off (not being attacked) because the five puppies--all coming from a bad situation--were super happy, energetic, and trying their best to simultaneously snuggle and play with me.

See my facial expressions? That's how you interpret Emporer Nickus Maximus' decrees.

Thumbs up? Let them live another day.
Thumbs down? Kill dem bitches.

Historical or not, that's how I roll.
