Slither (2006)

Started Nicktoberfest a bit late, sadly, as this was my first horror flick to watch so far due to life circumstances - three days into October. Ah well. Anyway.

It's a shame this movie turned out to be a box office flop. I think it's received a solid cult following, though. It should. It's a lot of fun in that monster drive-in kind of flick. Blatantly ridiculous at times, but with some fantastic special effects, I forgot how much I enjoyed this movie.

I wonder if there's a remote chance we could get a sequel, now that writer/director James Gunn hit the big time with Guardians of the Galaxy. Probably just wishful thinking.
Being an SC boy, I thought it was funny that they said it was set in SC with all those high latitude trees. It reminded me of Austin Powers, when he says, "Isn't it funny how the English countryside looks in no way like southern California?"

Lethal Weapon 2.

Dem buddy feels. Also Riggs sure can do an amazing amount of fighting, flexing, lifting and extending with an arm that is supposedly dislocated at the shoulder.

Also South African accents always make me think they are cartoon characters... it's like the dutch trying to fake an australian accent.

Same basic concept, alien worms that eat your brain and turn you into a walking corpse. Funny thing about Night of the Creeps. My family used to think I was crazy saying that the ending that they broadcast on HBO was completely different that the one that they used when it was broadcast on basic cable. Not that it was edited, but a completely different ending.

I was vindicated when the internet came around and I was able to confirm that there are, in fact two different endings that were shown on different broadcasts.

The DVD/Blu-Ray rerelease has both endings on the disc. I've still only ever seen the one. Every year, I try to get the family to watch it come Hallowe'en. Gonna get another chance pretty soon.

Insidious 2: Surprisingly entertaining for a sequel, although it definitely felt like they had planned it all along.

The Lady in Black: Good ghost story. Good to see Daniel Radcliffe out of Potter. Makes me want to see Horns (have to read the book first though).

American Psycho: Not bad, but not as good as I was hoping - definitely a victim of the "I've heard so much about this it has to be great" Internet syndrome.

The Double with Jesse Eisenberg; there are others. We liked the trailer for it a few months back and stuck it on the queue. We made it about 35 min in and stopped it. Too quirky. It was like Joe vs the Volcano meets Fight Club. Big fat meh.

And now it's on instant, so I am glad we wasted a DVD slot on it.

With Alien Isolation out now, and me waiting for it to go on steam sale, I decided to go back to a classic and watch Alien.

Such a good movie, even today I'm amazed at the shots and effects they manage to pull in this. These are all practical effects with real sets, and it shows in just how great it all looks, combined with some really great performances, especially of course Sigourney Weaver. Add on top of that the fact that I'm a fan of HR Giger's artwork, and you have an excellent movie.

Watching it now after who knows how long, I only just noticed how much you get to see the alien before it's actual 'reveal' in its final adult form. It's present in a few scenes before that, just hanging out in the background, but because it has such a weird shape, it's hard to see if you don't know what to look for. In fact, the scene just before the first kill, the crewman looks up directly at it and doesn't see it, and as an audience member you don't see it either, or at least don't know what you're seeing (unless you're watching it again, of course).

The only weak part of the movie, for me, is the really jarring cut they do when reactivating Ash's head, when it very clearly just jump cuts from a prop head to an actor head. In a movie in which every scene is so well done, that is jarringly bad, and it seems like they could have disguised that cut so easily rather than just do it with the head clear and center frame.

That's kind of how I felt. I definitely enjoyed it, but not as much as I thought. I'd love to actually read it now.

Okay, something really funny about that scene and a related one in the sequel.

The white substance they used in Alien in 1979 was water with some coloration in it, at least for the blood on his face and coming out his mouth. Why? Because they knew milk would quickly start to go bad under the hot lights used on set.

On the set of Aliens in 1986, Lance Henriksen got food poisoned by the milk/yogurt mixture used for Bishop's blood, since it had soured quickly under the hot lights used on set.[DOUBLEPOST=1412714408,1412714271][/DOUBLEPOST]

The book is a lot darker. The movie repeatedly hints that Patrick is imagining all of the horrible things he does - they're psychopathic fantasies rather than actual murders. The book leaves some doubt, but a lot less. Also, the sex gets way more graphic and way, way squickier.
At one point, Patrick drills a hole in a dead woman's head to literally skull fuck her.

I Know That Voice! - John DiMaggio (Bender, Jake on Adventure Time!) put together a documentary with ALL the voice actors he could get. The result is great. It's fun putting faces with all the voices, and seeing some familiar ones, too. I highly recommend it, even if only listening to your childhood cartoons recite Ezekiel 25:17.
It's currently streaming on Netflix.

So I've heard. I'll definitely have to prepare myself. Violent stories affect me strongly, and I usually need "recovery" time after--lots of Bob's Burgers reruns and David Sedaris essays to make me feel like me again.

Oh, yeah I forgot to mention I watched this recently. It's really interesting, especially if you grew up on cartoons in the 90's and beyond (there's only one or two old-school VAs in it). I had no idea Dee Bradley Baker was basically the new Frank Welker, in that he does a ridiculous amount of animal/etc noises and goes uncredited for them. Also Frank Welker's not in it, which made me a little sad.

The absence of Frank and (my favorite) Tress MacNielle was disappointing, especially considering they are two of the most prolific voice actors... possibly ever*. I read they turned in down because they are super-private and don't get why people would be interested. Ah, well, can't have it all. And although it's 20+ years too late, it would have been amazing to have Mel Blanc interviewed for this. I'm glad they remembered to include June Foray, who's a legend long before most of us in here were born.

(*not necessarily the top, but probably Top 10.)

Yeah I've noticed Welker rarely does interviews. I think I've seen all of like, two, maybe, and one was part of a quick behind-the-scenes for a Transformers game that was just him and Peter Cullen.

Also, I just looked up Cullen for the hell of it, and he is 73. :(

Well... they are clones
I personally had a theory about the clones and their accents. Regular troopers (including commanders) would tend to have the same, neutral accent since they were all flash-trained via simulators and digital instructors. Advanced Recon Commandos (ARCs) would all talk like Jango Fett, since he trained them directly. Republic Commandos (RCs) would have a variety of accents since they had different instructors - each company of 104 (26 squads) had one main sergeant, but would cross train with other groups for certain specialist knowledge.

I didn't realize both of these people were omitted, nor that they try to stay out of the public eye (especially since Welker has been well-known in Hollywood for a long, long time). MacNeille is Mom (Futurama), Babs Bunny (Tiny Toons), Dot (Animaniacs), Crazy Cat Lady (Simpsons), and that's just the ones I can think of off the top of my head in the last 5 minutes.

Man, from listening to Rob Paulsen's podcast and from John Dimaggio has said, Frank Welker just vehemently refuses any sort of thing like this. Dimaggio wanted Frank Welker and Paulsen says that he asks Frank to be on his podcast every time they golf.

I'm going to add Gadget on Rescue Rangers. The whole reason I know Tress' name was because I loved CnD'sRR and Tiny Toons, and my 9 year old self noticed Gadget and Babs sounded eerily similar. A little pre-Internet research ( I.e. watching the credits on tape) proved it was the same actress.
Plus, all of Babs' impressions has helped make Tress' voice immediately recognizable to my ear ever since.

Of the home invasion horror genre, I quite liked this one because it really plays with viewer expectations. Highly recommend, it's streaming on Netflix.

Before I Go to Sleep

I don't think this is released in the US yet? Starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth? Anyway, decent enough little movie, I'd say. Writing and plot aren't anything massively groundbreaking, but I think the cast do quite well with their parts.

EDIT: Also, I just added the plot summary to the Wikipedia article, just in case anyone wants to know what it's about. Unless you want to avoid spoilers, in which case don't read the Wikipedia article.

EDIT 2: Y'know, I was just thinking... the Wikipedia article didn't have a plot summary before I edited it, giving all the details of the film, final twist and all. So now anyone who reads the article will know almost everything about how the movie turns out. I'd imagine there will be people who think, "Hmm, now there's no need to go see this film, I know the story already."

In other words, I wonder how many ticket sales I just cost the film company by writing out the plot summary on Wikipedia.

I was looking for a PG horror to put on for my kids. I saw that Return of the Killer Tomatoes was on Netflix, and I thought, hey, I remember this being dumb fun. It's rated PG, and it must've been okay, seeing as how they made a cartoon out of it. Except the hot woman starts making sex jokes and asking the protagonist if he'd like a blowjob just 10 minutes in! How the hell is that PG? I've been pretty straight forward with my kids about sex and birth, but I'm not going to explain just yet what a blowjob is.
