From what I'm hearing, FFXV is going to have a lot of touches of FFVIII in it. I don't know if that's a good thing. Beautiful environments, emphasis on summons that you have to defeat / otherwise acquire, and a completely tacked-on magic system? Not to mention a statement, then an immediate contradiction of that statement:
Tabata: Also – I'm not sure if I can say this – in the world of XV, Noctis is the only one who can use magic.
Host: Yes.
Tabata: He's the only one with magic abilities. But as a game, having only Noctis be able to use magic doesn't really work, so we're implementing a rather unique system so that everyone in the party can use magic.
Now I remember back in FFVI on the SNES, for the first third of the game, only special characters could use actual magic - Terra, since she was half-Esper, and Celes, since she was genetically modified, as well as Kefka as a less stable experimental result, etc. In fact, it was considered freaky that Terra could use magic in that world. All the other characters had unique special abilities that made them useful to varying degrees in certain situations. Then once magicite started being accessible, allowing you to tap into the power of Espers, your characters would gradually gain magic, but you had to earn it. And you know what? That worked great. It made sense. Why shouldn't just one character be allowed to use magic? Hell, in FFX, at the start only Yuna and Lulu could use magic, and no one else could unless you modified their sphere grids to cross-train. And again, that allowed everyone to have well-developed unique abilities that made a difference with party selection.
Look, we already know that you're going to face magic-using enemies, because you always do, and I'm already willing to bet that one of the major baddies will have almost identical abilities to Noctis, because of course he does, and there will be some cliche forgotten link between the two of them, blah blah blah. So enough of the "Well, he's on the only one in the world who can use magic" bulllshit.
One odd quote: "
Camping is one of the base features of XV. It's a world where time passes from morning to night, so in order to have Noctis and the others who inhabit it be more than just puppets, but living characters players can feel empathy towards, if you have them remain awake all the time, I thought it would be more effective if that was a bad thing."
*That* is how he wants to create empathy? By making you camp out every hour or so or be debuffed? Yeah, forget the "have human-like motivations for your actions" or "do things that make for a coherent, engaging story" - nope, just have them eat and sleep! Because god knows how much empathy people have for their Sims.
See, this what that guy was talking about with Squeenix. "Just do something human!"
