Minor victory thread

It's a gorgeous, clear and starry night here and we went out and spent hours taking pictures :). Got to use my baby and my new 14 mm. Yay!!!

Now icing my hand and enjoying a victory beer!

Got me an arduino starter kit for christmas, and have been going through the projects in the starter book.

I already know a fair bit about electronics, but still find myself getting excited when I make these stupid LEDs blink on and off.

I've never done any microcontroller programming, so it's neat to design a circuit with hardware, and then write some software that reads/writes to the microcontroller ports to make your circuit go. I can already feel the power at my fingertips..muhahaha. Or something ;)

Sure, you can do the same thing with two transistors, two capacitors and four resistors, but you can't easily change the flash rate like you can with software. I can already see that I'll be doing neat stuff with it.

Ooo now you get to go onto all the electronics forums and watch everyone turn their noses up at Arduinos for some inexplicable reason.

"That's not electronics, that's programming!"

It's a fair argument. But it's actually both. Or actually *can* be both, though I can see that it'd be very easy to get what you want done with very little complexity in the way of circuit building, which is probably where the snobbery comes in.

But you know what? IDGAF ;)

I'm kinda with you on that. Do it the analog way if you need something that needs more engineering on the front end but has fewer points of potential failure in the future and never needs to change. But if you just want something that does the thing you want the way you want when you want, and can have its function changed with very little effort, then that's the whole point behind general purpose processors.

Could an analog circuit do this?

(and yes, I know the answer is technically "yes," but it would be extremely complicated)

Latest round of "other people's drama buys me stuff"...

Front desk girl decided to quit with only a day's notice, so my Sunday off went bye-bye. The OT will buy me a new (or at least new to ME) bass. :D

he's all about that bass

Because that's (and by 'that' I mean the bass) my primary instrument, I heartily approve of this picture.

Though he's clearly not planning on playing, the bottom of the scroll piece should be around the top of his head. The spike needs to be out further.

We could go help him?

I mentioned in the Rant thread recently that my external hard drive seemed to die. It kept making a clicking or beeping noise and wouldn't work.

Brought it to my brother-in-law, who took it apart and managed to copy some things from it. Gave it back to me and suggested keeping it apart and plug directly into my computer (not using USB) long enough to copy everything over.

Oddly enough, though, I put it back together and now? It's working fine again? Really weird.

But I'd already purchased a new external hard drive to replace it. So I'm still going to back everything up onto the new one, but may now be able to use old one should I need it. Not holding up hope, though, that it's working for good. So I'm only transferring one folder at a time, then unplugging it to let it cool down.
