It's a live action movie based on an anime. That's already a big strike against it at the American box office. I can see how producers would want as much star power as possible. An unknown cast would risk making the thing basically straight-to-DVD/Cable no matter how good it is.
I'm probably part of the problem here. GITS movie? Not interested. GITS movie starring ScarJo? Now I'm curious.

Indeed. The live action Death Note movie pretty much soured me on all live action anime adaptations. But this, this I might watch.
I hope this bombs so they don't reconsider the abandoned live-action Akira project.
I kind of want a big budget, live-action Lupin The 3rd to act as counter to all these super serious spy movies like James Bond and The Borne series. Just a fun, wacky heist/comedy movie with a funny cast. It's so easy to do that I can only imagine how they'll fuck it up.
Also, GITS is going to suck as a live action movie unless they can do the slow parts well. The only reason Stand Alone Complex is so well regarded is because it had entire episodes devoted to exploring it's ideology... but that's not a movie that will make MONEY in America.

I've been told the live action one that just came out in Japan isn't awful, but it's not very good ether. You want to see a good adaption? Watch the Phoenix Wright one.

What the hell are you talking about? The last page and a half has been discussing what actress might fit the role better than ScarJo. In fact, the only mention at all about bodies was Gas pondering which costume from the animes they'd put her in.

Yep. Ryan Reynolds has been fighting for a long time with the Fox execs to get it off the ground, but it looks like it's finally happening. It's slated for a 2016 release.
Not unless they have some other evil organization they can use.
Marvel's got Hydra and AIM, so I don't know who they could use instead.
