Movie News & Miscellany

...so DC is making a Batman & Superman movie called "Enter The Knight"?

That's just what we're going with.

We're just laying that one out there.

And as expected Strange Magic is universally panned! I know that doesn't necessarily count as news as we could all see it coming from the trailer, but felt like typing it anyway.

Here's the problem with playing Follow the Leader, like WB/DC is doing with Marvel: they don't have the same mindset in doing it.

What I mean is, Marvel has all these movies laid out, and has an overarcing plan. "Okay, we'll introduce these plot threads leading to this movie in these three movies so they have time to develop in the background and we can build off what the audience has already been introduced to, so we don't have to waste as much time on exposition later. Then we'll explore the aftermath of these plot events with these characters while keeping things moving forward. Also, the fans really responded to this character and plotline, can we use that again at some point? Could we use that to resolve a plot point in a way that makes sense but surprises the audience?"

Whereas DC is like, "Okay, Marvel made a billion dollars doing this, we'd better do that too. Moviegoers seem to like that."

We have our first look at the costumes for the Fantastic Four in the new film.

Also, the plan is that they're apparently going for a David Cronenberg-type hard sci-fi take for this film. The basic plot is that, "The story centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy."

John Trank tells the outlet that that’s because he’s going for “a hard sci-fi take” that will “fall in line more with a Cronenberg-ian science fiction tale of something horrible happening to your body and [it] transforming out of control”.

Wow..... just.. wow..... that is so far from the Fantastic Four I...

Not necessarily. Their initial reactions - especially to Ben Grimm - were horror. They weren't like Spider-Man who was all, "Spider bit me, CHECK THIS SHIT OUT, YOU GUYS!"

It wasn't until Reed said, "No. We may be disfigured, but we will own up to it. We'll promote ourselves to the public as a family and as heroes."

In some ways, it's kind of taking disabilities or disfigurements and owning them rather than shying from the public.

DC already did this with the first appearance of Hank Henshaw (cyborg superman) where he and his crew became horribly disfigured during a space mission as a sort of horror parody of the fantastic four.

My google-fu fails me, I can't find a better page and size than this.

Actually, I think even back in the very first issue of Fantastic Four, the team had their horrified reaction to their transformation. DC just kicked it up a grotesque notch and gave us Cyborg Superman through it.

Yes, while the Four were initially shocked by their transformations that is not what the Fantastic Four are about. Their themes have always been about scientific adventure, exploration and family, and in spite of Reed's amazing scientific discoveries, they were grounded as very real people, with flaws to match their gifts.

I am not slamming Cronenberg. I have enjoyed many of his films and he does body horror better than anyone.... but the Fantastic Four is not about body horror. Cronenberg would be great inspiration for something like Man-thing... you know... something based in horror.

Or, to name a DC property, Swamp Thing. Back when Warner Bros. was looking at making a new Swamp Thing film, they were considering Vincenzo Natali for directing it. Considering his film Splice was a pretty good early Cronenberg throwback, that had me excited.

Again, it's almost impossible to tell tone from 1:30 teaser trailers, but movies I would love FF to resemble once they get through the origin story: Guardians of the Galaxy, Fast & the Furious 5/6/7, Ocean's 11

YOU WILL GET A PALE VERSION OF X-MEN MEETS DARK KNIGHT AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!!!

As someone who doesn't care about Fantastic Four, a Cronenberg-style body horror thing would be okay with me.

But that wouldn't be fair to the fans.
