sat down last night and watched all of HoTD. What a weird show. I kept complaining how the zombie plague and everything that came after just felt far fetched. still watched all of it in one shot with Kiki. Lord save me from myself.
Really.

Highschool of the Dead is "farfetched?"

You must hate just about every anime out there then :D

Granted, HotD has its issues for sure (gratuitous fanservice, abuse of character tropes, hackneyed dialog), but this is a genre where a heavy suspension of disbelief is pretty much required across the board.

As a science person I always tear horror movies a new asshole for having crazy conditions for how a disease spreads. in this case you get bit and BOOM YOU ARE A ZOMBIE.

Just tell yourself it's magic, not science. After all, Sailor Moon waves her little stick and BOOM CLOTHES OUTTA NOWHERE.

but sailor moon is explicitly magic! :3

ALSO
WHY DID THEY ALL LAUNCH NUKES AT EACH OTHER IN THE END!? WHAT WAS THE POINT OF NUKING EACH OTHER BACK TO THE STONE AGE!?

Yeah, it's the zombies that make the show unbelievable, not purple-hair-girl's supersonic boob physics.[DOUBLEPOST=1428051275,1428051114][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, this:

see, I can forgive bad bob physics, this is anime we are talking about. I get that its complete disconnect from the way a mass of fat works. I let the boobies slide as a comedy/fan service deal. Also the clip you posted is even better in english.

yeah but only when the infection is contained to one specific area. in this case it was world war z. >_>

Really, I find the idea of superpowers going nuke-happy during the end of the world a bit less farfectched than the infection somehow making it on board a deployed AEGIS cruiser.

yeah I was shocked how that managed to sneak on to a deployed naval vessel and no one SOSed when it started to spread.

The new season begins this week, here's what I've watched so far:

Shougeki no Souma: Kid makes amazing food, people orgasm while they eat it. He gets sent to a cooking school after his dad closes their restaurant, and things go from there. It's a culinary battle shounen and the manga's a lot of fun.

Plastic Memories: Super-lifelike androids with a lifespan of about 9 years have been created, and are impossible to tell from humans. The MC works at a reclamation service with other humans and androids, who must collect androids at the end of their lifespan. A good mix of comedy and tragedy, already teared up in the first episode. Could be one of the best of the season.

DanMachi: MC is employed by a Goddess to clear dungeon floors for her glory and his livelihood. He's also the only one who works for her, so it's slow going until his Goddess discovers his potential for super-growth of "stats" as he gains experience. Mostly a comedy, I think it's based off an LN/manga as well.

Rei-Kan!: Girl can see spirits, SoL comedy dealing with that and how her friends and relatives handle her "gift."

Yahari Rom-Com s2: If you liked the first season, this is shaping up to be just as good, I think.

Got a couple more to watch still, including the new Haruhi series focusing on the alternate universe version of Yuki Nagato from the movie.

Anisava

Well...that sure was a television program! Underdeveloped characters, weird animation that makes early Weebl cartoons look like Max Fleischer toons, and a lack of closure, what's not to like?

Please no monkey ssj, pls no monkey ssj...

Seriously, who came up with that?
Um....Akira? Its part of the legend of the Super Saiyan.

What I'm hoping for is for Uub to get some fucking development! Dude was not only the reincarnation of Kid Buu, but was ALSO Goku's damned apprentice! And yet for some reason, he was barely in GT, I guess they felt Pan NOT being a Super Saiyan was more interesting.

Either way- I AM ENTHUSED!

I mean that SSJ 4 thing with the fur and stuff... it's why i didn't even bother watching GT at all.
Oh that, yeah it wasn't needed. Funny story, the design of SSJ4 was Toriyama's only involvement with the show...kinda says a lot doesn't it? Hell he was FOR Super Sayain god not looking like SSJ4, and when you admit a super form that is basically just a pallet swap is better than your design, you KNOW its bad.

I mean, let's be fair. What are the odds that most anime makers and fans have any idea what real breasts are like?

Watched the new(ish) Berserk films last night. Really really liked them. I wish the story went farther in that format, I've never really been able to read Manga. I also wish I had a better understandin of what kinds of anime I like. I find most of it to be remarkably bad. Embarrassingly bad really, usually fulfilling a superficial and juvenile otaku fantasy world (sword art online was one that really bothered me for this).

But some of them seem to hit a note I just can't find in other media. Sometimes it's just because it's such a strange story/setting no one else would try it (Samurai 7), sometimes ts because it's just exceptional writing (Samurai Champloo or Cowboy Beebop), but sometimes it's something different. Some animes have this dark supernatural essence to them that is deeply disturbing but in a very unique way. Berserk hit this note, as did Darker than Black and Ren, same with the Legend of the Overfiend films (although those are a wee bit too...rapey for my taste). Claymore too.

That latter category is the one I really wan to find more of (the others are great too but usually easier to find). There's something deeply unsettling about them, I don't really know what it is. A degree of nihilism maybe? The way the demonic world in them works is usually fascinating as well. The only western stuff I've seen with demons like that is the 40k universe and that's really contained to books.

Any suggestions on other anime that fit that dark supernatural vibe would be greatly appreciated, with the caveat that I find the cliche otaku fantasies to be pretty bad.[DOUBLEPOST=1431291668,1431291345][/DOUBLEPOST]A few others I'm remembering that fit the theme I'm looking for:

Elfin Lied
Dead Man Fun Land (or something like that, this one wasn't my favorite but was interesting)
Paranoia Agent (in my opinion one of the best animes ever produced)

Have you watched "Another?"

Usually I preface such a recommendation with "not for the squeamish" but if you are enjoying Berserk you'll obviously able to handle this easily.

I saw that one in a list of horror animes. Seemed like a "Final Destination" kind of thing. May give it a shot, but I think I really am more pulled by the supernatural essence of it than the violence/gore.

Hellsing Ultimate is mostly dark fantasy, Tokyo Ghoul might interest you as well. There's also PsychoPass, which is loosely based off of Minority Report. Check the descriptions on MyAnimeList for a quick blurb about them, or you could also plug in ones you liked and see what other users recommend for similar shows.

Well, couldnt' get into Hellsing Ultimate. I feel like the art style really clashed with the theme. It was too cartoonish. Is that even a fair description of an anime?

Seems legit. I've made the same accusation on Artificial Academy 2 being "more cartoony" than 1, even though they were both "anime" style.

Another question, you ever watch Trinity Blood? It's kind of a vampire thingy, but honestly it feels more like Trigun than Berzerk or Paranoia Agent.[DOUBLEPOST=1431381463,1431381120][/DOUBLEPOST]Other people also recommend, if you like Paranoia Agent you might like (but I myself have not seen):

BoogiePop Phantom
Serial Experiments Lain
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Monster
Perfect Blue

I'm thinking of checking out Monster. When they cry seems more like straight up guro, which really is a bit much for me. Saw some of Corpse Party as well and was just like "oh god no".

I wonder if Toriyama is going to be a part of it this time. He had nothing to do with GT so most folks don't consider the series canon anyway.
It seems like the push for new content is because of Toriyama. He got inspired by one of the video games (Battle of Z, I think) and so now we've got two new movies, more to come maybe. He talked about a series where Goku and some of the others would travel to other universes and dealing with the other gods of destruction. My guess is this series will be that.

I haven't been into DBZ since I was probably 15, but the Abridged series reminded me that there was a lot I once loved about it, and the first of the these new movies was fun. So long as they don't stretch out episodes with powering up and other bullshit like they once did, I'm down for a new story arc.

It was Dragon Ball Online, not Battle of Z. He spent years advising for the game and had to come up with a lot of new stuff to make it work (including female Maijins and how they came to be). This is why a lot of neat and interesting stuff happens in Xenoverse and why it seems to follow the canon of Dragon Ball Online.
