I questioned this too. Other articles suggest that their purpose goes beyond just trying to cool the water. Black blocks more of the light from penetrating, which means the balls get hotter, but less UV reaches the reservoir water, which reduces the amount of chlorine that degrades. Also, the black color protects the plastic the balls are made from, reducing the amount of UV damage the plastic takes, which means a longer life-span. Also, it seems unclear if the black color will actually raise the temperature significantly, and may help it to cool faster at night.Why aren't they white??? They should be white!
