[Movies] The Upcoming Movies Trailer Thread

Zoolander is intentionally dumb. It is making fun of male models.

The movie itself is actually pretty good. I don't really like much else Ben Stiller has done either. Zoolander is better than Mystery Men IMO.

A sequel, while completely unnecessary, could be a lot of fun. Could also dip down into the territory of other comedy sequels that couldn't capture the spirit of the original (Blues Brothers 2000, Dumb & Dumberer).

Zoolander is not a good movie but it's not trying to be and it nails the stuff it actually wants to do. You want to see Ben Stiller NAIL a move? Watch Tropic Thunder.

When I first saw Zoolander on video, I wasn't that impressed. I thought it was okay, but not great. Over the years, I've found myself surrounded by people that love it, and after repeated viewings, I kinda get it. It's infinitely quotable (I can't believe how many times I've used "Mer-MAN, Dad! Mer-MAN!"). But the funny thing is it may possibly be my favorite Will Ferrell role. I know everyone likes his man-child stuff, but I love that he's sort of the straight man in this. And now that @PatrThom mentions it, I like seeing Ben Stiller be the airhead instead of the sad-sack for once (or less often). It's like the two of them decided to switch type, and for me, it's one of their best ideas.

So I probably won't see it in the theater, but I definitely want to see the sequel.

Was anyone really chomping at the bit for a sequel to Zoolander?

(Keep in mind, I've never seen the original. Any time I caught bits of it on TV, it looked dumb as hell. And I can't really stand Ben Stiller, with the exception of when he was in Mystery Men. But that was more an ensemble film, so he wasn't the only star.)
I really liked The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It isn't Stiller's usual goofy role. I put it in the same mental box as Ferrell's Stranger than Fiction, which is one of my favorite low-key comedies. In both, the main character is very straight-laced (that is, they play the straight man instead of a goofball) and the comedy comes from their being pulled towards being...more. Both films are polar opposites to their usual films.

I love how Ferrel says "he's so hot right now." It makes me laugh every time.

Zoolander is a classic and I will hear nothing to the contrary. I don't know how the sequel will be, but I (mostly) liked Anchorman 2 so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Still looks like a Kevin and Kell knock-off, but a good one. Only hopefully with less technology references that date/alienate itself from anyone who doesn't know what the terms are, and won't randomly write off characters for no reason, and won't reveal two random characters were related as a plot-twist FOUR TIMES!

Not surprised at all. The creator of Hey Arnold! left the company on bad terms after they nixed the movie about Arnold's parents and the Helga-as-lonely-16-year-old-girl thing. I'm betting he's onboard to finish this.

Real glad of it too, this and those awesome new Zim comics briging in ALL the nostalgia.

This is one of my daughter's favorite books. I don't really like it much. She watched the old movie in class and thought it was terrible, so maybe she'll like this one more. Though at least she has been already trained young that the book is better. ;)

Eh, not the same with all of Dahl's books. Charlie and the Chocolate factory barely had a climax in the book, the movies gave Charlie a real chance to prove himself where the book just had all the other kids prove how worse they were than him with Charlie not proving anything himself.

And Dahl HATED the movie to the point that he refused to let anyone make a movie of the sequel. The estate won't even sell the rights.

There are rare cases. For example, The Princess Bride -- though that one's a bit unfair. Same writer, and he was an experienced screenwriter before writing the book. Though we did lose the whole "life isn't fair" theme outside of the one time Elwes shouts it.

I've read his criticisms, honestly it sounds like nitpicking because it wasn't completely accurate, also(and this is just my theory) because he couldn't admit that the movie had a better climax than his book. Seriously, it was BARELY a hero's journey, which is fine for a half hour kids book but for a 70 minute film it would fall flatter than a prototype of fizzy lifting drinks. A scene which he also hated.

Well, okay, but you could argue that Charlie isn't really the hero so much as he is an observer. This is the tail end of Willy's journey, not Charlie's. Charlie is supposed to be untarnished, so a lot of people dislike the Fizzy Lifting Drinks scene. It makes Charlie no better than the others, so why does he win? Just because he didn't sell the secrets?
