Movie News & Miscellany

You know, if anyone really does get "tricked" into going by the valentines day ad, they're going to figure it out pretty damn quick when they get to the theater and a red and black guy with swords and guns is plastered all over on posters and cardboard stand-up cutouts.
Hey, Cupid's a guy with a white and red robe and a bow and arrow. This is just a modern, slightly more grim re-imagining!

Why would the victim look at those to see the title? They're obviously not the same movie.

Also... Cranium NeCRAPhilia Carpenter Square

Better that than Fantastic Voyage. I didn't realize what that was at first, but I'd really love del Toro's talents not to be wasted on "shrink down, go inside human body." Unless there's more to it than that, I'm gonna pass on that one.

There was. A political subplot, some science sorcery, but of course the main feature of the original movie was to see how many ways they could imperil Raquel Welch.
The second book* tries to be more factual in its tale (it still hand-waves some physics), and is the first place I ever heard of Russian sleep.

*Not a sequel, though.

“That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review,” he said. “She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another ‘Mad Max’ movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another ‘Mad Max.’ It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.”

Elizabeth Banks will be playing Rita Repulsa in the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers movie.
There have been complaints about not finding an actor of Asian descent for her roll... which completely ignores that Rita (in various incarnations) have been re-cast as two different Latino women before this point because the original actor died.

3 women played her, 2 different voice actresses. There was the original Japanese actress, An American actress for the series, and an American actress for the first movie. All though I guess I should say gaijin actress as I'm too lazy to Imdb it to see where they were born.

The recasts had nothing to do with the original actress dying, all though she has since passed away. They just needed new footage of her, and their Zyuranger footage was exhausted so they had moved on to the completely American villain of Lord Zedd.

The original Japanese actress showed up in Mahou Sentai Magiranger (her fourth super sentai series) so when the show was made into Power Rangers Mystic Force they did an homage to thr actress by making the character the reformed Rita Repulsa. That's where the second voice actress comes in.

All that being said of course people are going to complain about it. It's the Internet. I particularly love how people are upset that they're not casting an Asian woman, not a Japanese woman mind you. Because who actually cares about ethnicity?

Whoa, next you'll tell me not every black person is Afro-American and not every white guy's Caucasian! Get out of here!
It's lazy, a "good enough" attitude that lets a box get checked off on the "fight for diversity" checkbox.

And one of my biggest peeves as a comic fan is when people call Black Panther and Blade strong African-American characters.

i was super confused how you knew all this, and then i remembered you are the resident sentai nerd, and i laughed way to hard.

I always forget that she didn't die until 2006. For some reason I always remember it as happening much sooner, hence the re-casting.

Feels good to be back in action on Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2!!! I can't even tell you how excited I am. Ok I'll try. I'm ecstatic. I'm bursting with joy. I'm overwhelmed by feelings of enthusiasm, joy, gratitude, conviviality, camaraderie, elation, exhilaration. I just used an online thesaurus for these words. I suggest trying that. That way instead of saying "I'm very excited" say, "I'm exhilarated." Never too late to learn words. The pen is mightier than the sword. I never got that. I could whoop someone's ass if I had a sword and they only had a pen. WAIT!!! Now I get it. Cause you could use a giant pen with a dagger on one end? And a gun on the other end? No? Whatever. Point is... Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Is going to be the greatest spectacle film of all time. This is not.... bear with me... using online thesaurus..... Hyperbole! This is not hyperbole!

When I first heard the news from some forum, I thought she was replacing Rita's actress on the show and I thought...whaaaaaaat? Her original VA is still alive, and according to canon she stopped being evil. It'd be both bad writing AND a dick move...which I guess isn't new for this series but still.

EITHER WAY-I bet she'll do fine in this hopefully not terrible remake of something nostalgic.
