Invader Zim issue 2

Wow...Zim went through ALL that trouble just to show Dib's embarrassing work-out to the en-TIRE universe. Zim is officially the king of trolls.

Picked up a few goodies recently. Traded in a bunch of comics (specifically all comics by Brian Wood; the why of which is too hard to explain) and got:

-Fade Out Vol. 2 (by Brubaker & Phillips, who are impervious to a bad comic)
-@Yoshimickster, you'll approve of this: DC One Million Omnibus. Been staring at this bad boy every time I went into the store, so finally broke down and got it.

Also nabbed some goodies at work today:
-Promethea Vol. 3 & 4. I've been sitting on just 1 & 2 for the longest time. Been wanting to give this series a second chance.
-Little Nemo in Slumberland Vol. 1, by Windsor McCay. THIS was a helleva find. Book normally goes for $70 Canadian. Got it for $2 after my discount.

DC 1 Million

So I'm slowly making my way through this monstrosity. There's some issues in here that I'd never read before...and kinda wish I didn't. Not only do they have nothing to do with the main storyline (from either the present or the future), but they're...not all that great. There's a 2-parter with the Legion of Superheroes that I skipped because it didn't make any damn sense. Same for The Creeper issue. Some are just bad, like the Wonder Woman issue or Azrael. The Hitman and Young Justice issues are played for laughs. Haven't hit the Lobo issue yet, but I would assume the same.

I get that they wanted to make this a complete collection, but man, does it ever meander as a result. Anything not involving the core 7 heroes is pretty much missable. There are some points where it's several issues in a row of self-contained issues like Chase, Azrael, etc. When the book gets back to the main plot, I'm all like,"Oh right! That!"

Still enjoying it overall, but it's...yeah, it's a mixed bag. Typical of most big crossovers like this, really. I still enjoy the core story - as I always did - but the other comics that are part of the story for no damned reason kinda pull it down for me.

I need to read 1 million at some point.

The Sculptor by Scott McCloud. Big 496 page original graphic novel by Understanding Comics and Zot! author Scott McCloud. I've only read the first chapter (about 100 pages) so far but needless to say it's really good. The story is about a down on his luck sculptor who makes a deal with the devil to be able to use his hands to sculpt anything his mind can come up with, in exchange he will die in 200 days. If you're familiar with Scott McCloud's previous works it will come as no surprise that the use of the medium is top notch. The entire book is printed black and blue, which gives it a very unique feel.

Finally got around to getting the New Teen Titans Volume 1 trade that DC finally published because no-one wants to pay three hundred fucking dollars for the out of print hard-cover. All in all I loved it, love all the characters, the 80s comic art that I feel we as a culture NEED to bring back(or just me when I get the time), and that origin of Cyborg issue that brought manly tears.

Just got my monthly comic order in today, lots of stuff I'm looking forward to reading, Astro City, Mickey Mouse, Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck, Deadpool, Harley Quinn, Spider-Man 2099, Uncanny Avengers, New Avengers, Star Wars and Groo. Sever series are starting new and I'll post a little review as I get finished with them.

Wayward: String Theory - super in love, and having been to Japan makes it that much better for me because it's so accurate!

The Wicked + The Divine - HELL. YES. I don't know what I just read but I want more, so much more.

Wytches - I haven't read that many 'horror' comics, but I'm really liking this one so far. Creepy, fascinating, and I'm so curious to see where it goes.

Sex Criminals - I couldn't pass this up, my comic guy said I would love it and he wasn't wrong. SO GOOD. And there's much more to it than the title implies. ;)

Phonogram - it's like time travel through music...I'm intrigued and while I'm really enjoying it, I also have no idea what's going on.

I just finished volume one last night, and it's the first horror comic since Locke & Key to genuinely creep me out. The art bothered me at first, but totally won me over by the second chapter.

The art never bothered me - I'm in love with the fact that it's a watercolor overlay that I know they painted. I think that's pretty cool. It can definitely be distracting though.

That said, I'm totally with you about it being genuinely creepy. Especially seeing the Wytches, BLEH. I can't wait to see where it goes! :D

I've been running a comic book club for my store and that's one of the titles for December so I need to read it soon. Glad to hear you liked it.

Another really good one. Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarskey's work on this book is far better than it needs to be.

Fun! I hope you guys end up liking it as much as I do. Let me know what you think.

Right?? It's pretty heavenly. I'm really into it.

So I've been getting every Star Wars tpb shipped to me as they're released.

What the fuck is up with Shattered Empire? Was it only like 3 issues long? Thanks Marvel for padding it with the first issue of Princess Leia (which I already owned the tpb of) and some old 80's Marvel Star Wars comic I have no interest in order to charge full price for it.

That was some real bullshit there.

On the graphic novel front, I started and finished on my way to work The King in Yellow, adaption of the Robert Chambers collection.

Definitely interesting, though since it's a collection of four short stories, it's not super cohesive. Nonetheless, it works in getting across an atmosphere and following interconnected characters in a fiction 1890s-view of the 1920s that managed to predict a war with Germany. A couple twists and turns, one of which certainly caught me off-guard. The last story's context is likely changed a bit from the source material, but it works as a finale to the graphic novel.

Oh, it's a great week for comics!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0. This book is morphinominal! Great art, a modern take on the original rangers (It's clearly not the 90s in the story), and a plot that takes advantage of the medium without going overboard. Not being limited by Japanese footage and suit actors allow for them to expand upon the traditional plot elements.

Secret Wars #9 is a fitting end to one of the best events in the past decade. A satisfying ending, that sets up the already being published All New All Different Marvel Universe. Stuff we had seen in the ANAD books are "debuted" here, explanations for characters (except for one) are provided.

Superman American Alien #3. Okay I haven't read this one, but based on the first 2 issues I'm going to claim that this book is great. Max Landis and I share very similar views on Superman, and this book has been hitting all the right buttons.

Among the comics I picked up yesterday:

The Legend of Wonder Woman #1 -FINALLY someone's trying to undo the crappy origin Nu52 stuck her with. Good art and story. I'm looking forward to the next 8 issues.

Hellcat #1- very funny! A very different Patsy Walker if you only know her from Jessica Jones. The art is playful to go well with the writing. I'm going to try to keep an eye on this series.

Injustice: Gods Among Us (comic), years 1-4, first couple issues of 5...

Well, this has sure been a rollercoaster of quality. And every issue feels so very goddamn short. It has some powerful moments in it, especially in the earlier years, but damn I'm glad I didn't pay money for it.

Just started reading "Kongou Banchou" from the same author as "Seven Deadly Sins",one of the most over the top shonen mangas I've ever read and I fucking LOVE IT! Main character has the classic "Shonen face":

Look at hair too, GOD so shonen. And you have all sorts of insane fighter characters, ranging from impossible martial artists, to downright MUTANTS! But it DOES make me wonder...HOW THE FUCK WAS THERE NO FIGHTING GAME/CARTOON BASED ON THIS?!

Oh my god their car was just attacked by sword fish, I LOVE THIS COMIC! Its like the crazy bastard child of Dragon Ball, Kinnikuman, and Jojo's Bizarre adventure, and I am KINDA pissed that it only ran for 12 volumes.

Edit: And the sword fishes boss is a jacket wearing Megalodon with a speech translator...SEQUEL SERIES! NEED!

FINAL EDIT: And I'm done...DAMMIT I want more! Its just a fun crazy over the top Shonen manga, characters based on crazy artist submissions, random plot twists out of no where, ridiculous explanations for super powers, an overabundance of catch phrases, there NEEDS to be some sort of spiritual successor to this. And while I like it, no I don't think "Seven Deadly Sins" is that successor, even if it is by the same author.

Holy F*cked Issue 1

Its a comic where Jesus and Satan are in a loving gay relationship in modern day Los Angeles-OH-and Satan is pregnant with Jesus's baby. If that don't sound like an Eisner winner I don't know WHAT is!

Is "Emperor Blackgate" as dumb a villain as I think he is? His powers come from a combination of Venom, Poison Ivy plants, and Man-bat serum, all of that adds up to sounding like a bad fan character.

He started out kind of interesting when he was "Emperor Penguin" (basically a henchman with ambition who takes control of Penguin's criminal empire while he's off helping the Joker out), but definitely gets dumber when he gets the super powers.
