[Movies] The DC Cinematic Universe - The David Zazlav Dumpster Fire.

It might have more than $400 million at the box office, but it needs at least $800 million recoup the investment. Marketing alone cost $150 million over the past couple years.

How the hell does Flash have dream travel powers?

Also, the whole Jimmy Olsen thing--Snyder's reason for throwing him in and killing him was that they didn't have room. If this was a Marvel movie, they wouldn't have said that. They would've made it work, because they understand the need for narrative layers, for main characters and supporting characters.

Snyder is a fucking idiot.

Angry Joe's spoiler review is kind of funny, kind of sad, because the outrage is great, but Joe was really looking forward to this, thought things would grow from Man of Steel. (Note: Haven't watched the whole thing yet.)

No, Synder's reason for throwing him in and killing him was "to have fun with the character".

Marvel has fun with characters by randomly including a Russian Space Dog and Howard the Duck in the Stinger of a movie, and using the name of an obscure Hulk character for one of Peter Quill's flings.

Snyder has fun by having a beloved character gruesomely murdered anonymously.

Wait, they killed off Mercy Graves too!? What the hell...

Is it wrong that I am hoping so much that this movie does not make it's 800 million investment? I don't want this to be a success for WB/DC, because I can't stand the direction this is going or the baby like bullshit Snyder is pulling. At least when Jon Favreau got sick of making Iron Man he graciously moved on, I feel like Zack Snyder is like "I can make money and piss people off too? Sure. Why not. Fuck those nerds".

Let's not forget the bit where he addresses complaints about his version of the characters by saying basically "Well that means you're not a real fan because I'm a better fan than you are so I must be right."

The Batman vs. Superman director was a guest on the Hall of Justice podcast and he defended the controversial choice to make Superman a killer.
“People are always like ‘You changed Superman.’ If you’re a comic book fan, you know that I didn’t change Superman. If you know the true canon, you know that I didn’t change Superman,” Snyder explained, before quickly adding, “Yeah, I changed him a bit.”
If that leaves you a little confused, Snyder elaborated on his thinking. “My point is that we don’t take liberties. What we’ve done is create a place where they can really be the mythological characters as designed in the comic books.”

All this talk about BVS and how they killing people left and right makes me think about the animated movie Superman vs the Elite.

Especially this scene comes to mind

Snyder will probably disagree

I like how Lois is all "they're willing to go places you're not"... as if Supes actual villains aren't also willing to kill?

It just dawned on me while reading that that my secondary idea about the floating dirt might be more accurate then i thought... they might actually go with the brainwashed Supes from the DCAU for the Darkseid film... hence the parademon dream thing and Flash saying to save HER (either Lois or Ma Kent help undo the brainwashing?).

I kind of have to agree with the sentiments of a lot of the critics: they CLEARLY want to make an Injustice movie because it's the only "event" that has really made them any money lately, but the entire weight of Injustice lies on having a Superman who is benevolent becoming a despot. The Superman that we have been exposed to is one that I'd hardly call "benevolent" and it's not like Batman is being portrayed any better, so where is the dramatic weight of the film? Fuck.

Even if they don't make the investment back, the opening weekend was a success, so they will call it a success and plow forward. The moment one of them has a ho-hum opening weekend, we'll see a shake-up in the plan, because WB is weak.

Angry Joe said they won't do Blackest Night until a long time from now, but if BvS is any indication, that'll be the next Green Lantern movie.

I would welcome an Injustice movie. I'd definitely prefer them going all out Injustice, rather than the amalgamated perversion they've actually made.

I know Snyder's DC Murderverse has all the makings of an Injustice adaptation, and more than one article has mentioned that the possibility of killing Lois Lane in the future will send Superman into his Injustice spiral. But what if the same scenario had a Kingdom Come effect instead? Let's say WB finally takes it's head out of it's ass and gets rid of Snyder, how do you get back to the core of the DCU? I feel like they could take the current "kill first, ask questions later" atmosphere and loosely adapt Kingdom Come (sans the aging),have the League questioning how they got to this point, and how to make it right again? It could also save Superman, and give him a chance to show some of the heart, soul, grace and thought that (used to be)the signature of his character.

I know it's not going to happen because they already have their movie stories picked out, but there's a small part of me that would like to think someone heard the criticisms of MoS and BvS and agreed it was time to course-correct.

Imagine if we lived in a world where, instead of Zach Snyder, WB hired good directors.

Guillermo Del Toro could be tapped to make an Arkham Asylum movie.

George Miller could do The Killing Joke

You want us to imagine that WB stopped the "we don't want to be Marvel" shtick, and actually followed Marvel's example of laying groundwork for a shared universe by hiring good directors each suited to the material they'd be working on.

And the imagination is the only place you'll be seeing that.

The really crazy thing is that WB/DC could have used the cultural awareness of the main characters that they are trying to tap into with BvS to completely reverse Marvel's roadmap. The first movie of the DC universe could have been "Justice League". The audience doesn't need to have any of the DC trinity characters explained to them. Most of the other heroes aren't hard to explain: the Flash (he's really fast), Aquaman (he's strong and can breath under water), Green Lantern (magic ring that makes boxing gloves), Cyborg (he's a cyborg, thus the name), etc. A decent creative team could have audience up to speed on the JL in the first fifteen minutes of the movie (even with no movies to set up anyone beforehand.) Heck, Joss Whedon could probably do it in one long take before the credits.

Or if they really wanted to do some grim, dark shit, they could have done a DOOM PATROL movie. Fuck, talk to Universal and do a team up... Why not do a Frankenstein: Agent of Shade movie?

My brother made me go with him to see it tonight. I used free points to not actually pay (I have thousands of Scene points stacked up).

Woof.

I did not like it.

The first two hours were a nigh incomprehensible mess. That movie needed a God damn editor.....and someone who could actually write dialog.

Dour and dreadful.

When we got back to my place, we watched Age of Ultron and Ant-Man on Netflix so that I could be reminded that super hero movies aren't always depressing piles of nihilistic shit.

Wasn't worth the crutches.

I feel like this would further the point that WB has no faith in all this. Marvel is playing the long game, but WB wants to rush out their big stories as quickly as possible, probably in case this tanks. But lets say it doesn't and they've done Injustice and Darkseid--then what?

Most likely if they film those movies and realize they can milk this longer, they'll delay big films and release more small ones, albeit rushed into production. It's just that, as Angry Joe pointed out, they've already done the Death of Superman, so where are the stakes for him?

Fucking Zach Snyder is a fucking idiot.

Probably, but I like it here. There's lots of candy and no Zack Snyder. :p

Come with me/ and you'll be/ in a world where Superman's a hero
No snapped necks/no Batfleck/ in a world where Superman's a hero
Snyder's gone/ Jimmy lives on/ in a world where Superman's a hero
The Justice League/ can still be/ if you truly wish it to be

There are 2-3 people here at work who are always singing this song. It's a great song. It says a lot. But they sing it a lot.
...not enough for me to start hating it, though.

They could reach back a little further and do a movie of Rac Shade in all its Ditkoesque glory. They wouldn't even have to change the plot.

Birth, Death, Movies has an interesting article about Suicide Squad. WB/DC has authorized tens of millions of dollars in reshoots to make the movie more humorous and to lighten the tone. Apparently, the studio realized that the more playful elements of the marketing campaign were the parts that really connected with the public and those elements did not accurately reflect the actual film. Reportedly, the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer includes all of the jokes in the current edit of the movie!

I hope this is true, and I hope they do it well. This movie should be a hybrid of good action and comedy. Going grim and serious would ruin it.

Holy shit, I might go watch a WB/DC movie!

This movie comes out in four months. I wish them luck.

Maybe if we're lucky, Sony will authorize reshoots for Ghostbusters. :p

"What do we need to reshoot Ghostbusters for? It's already got plenty of jokes! I mean, did you see how sassy that black woman is?"

look i just want to know how a jar of piss factors into this $400 million movie that hundreds (thousands?) of people worked on for several months or a year of their lives. and I don't want to read any of the 2,500+ word takedowns of the movie and zack snyder. I just want to know why and how a jar of piss is involved in this movie that tens of millions of people watched this week. whose piss? does it break? does anyone drink it? who touches it? where does it go after it's on screen?
