I can't wait to show this to the kids tomorrow. This was our second Dahl read-aloud for an author study that we did, and the kids just loved it. I wonder what they'll think about how the characters look compared with how they imagined them. OOH, I should show them a bit of the animated film too...
This movie looks pretty good to me. I think the BFG looks cool, and his dream horn is lovely. The only difference I can tell is that he says he kidnapped Sophie because he heard the loneliness in her heart. The reason he gives in the book is that she saw him, and he can't let any humans see him. It still fits with the book though, since his ears can also hear the breath of a ladybug. The way he glides about the city is exactly as I pictured him.
They took Doom into a really weird direction.

But I thought the giant kidnapped her because he was going to eat her like the other giants wanted him to, but he still couldn't do it.Looks good, but I'm hoping the movie itself is less "EPIC" than the trailer acts. That's why I'm on the fence about The Jungle Book, the most recent trailer portraying it as this epic tale of destiny, which is just not what I want to watch. There's barely a hair of Baloo in either the teaser or the full trailer, so I'm guessing it's just the usual trailer manipulation, but you can never know for sure until the movie comes out.

He got made fun of by one of the giants, the Bloodbottler I think, for not eating humans. But no, he didn't kidnap her to eat her. We just finished it recently. I don't know if I'll read it again next year. I'm thinking of doing Kate DiCamillo stories instead... specifically The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and The Tale of Despereaux. I'd forgotten how dialogue-heavy some of Dahl's books are. They're fun to read, but the kids tend to get lost in all the dialogue. I'd like to try reading a book with more rich narrative. It's an anthology? Also, there were clearly Sith dressed like the would have been during the Old Republic...
So far I've only seen the movie version of "Despereaux." I gotta say, I was not impressed.

The movie was a shallow, stupefied perversion of a beautiful and heartfelt story. Read the book. Even adults can get something out of it, like most great children's and young adult fiction.

And furthermore, I firmly believe that every child should read DiCamillo's work. She has this extraordinary ability to explain really complex themes to children in an honest, yet gentle way. It's not too gentle, either. It's just matter-of-fact. There's this wonderful line in Despereaux about a character whose heart started out good, but then mistreatment and anger caused it to twist in a way that could not be untwisted. I wish I had the book in front of me. In everything of hers that I've read, there's a lesson for children about something like loss, heartbreak, perseverance, etc... Can't talk her up enough.
I read Edward Tulane to my student teacher class. I'd never seen a group of children more engaged or touched by a story. It's sad and tough to get through, but what a payoff at the end.
I really did get the idea that the movie was more made for people who had already read the book and knew what was going on, a sort of "Let's animate the book! It'll be great!" but then they forgot to also make it a movie.

I think it's because some of the footage came from The Old Republic's cinematic trailers. For example, there's that very recognizable shot of Malgus and Vindican exiting their ship, lightsabers in hand.
EDIT: Also, apparently it's fan-made, so there's that.

If it makes you feel better, I was just watching the real trailer on tv and thought that was the one you posted. Brofist for half-paying attention!
This does take place close to the beginning of the original movie, so that's in character. "Darth Vader's foul stench" anyone?
As for waiting, HAHAHAAA, Disney owns Star Wars now and they paid a lot for it, so time to make the money back. We're getting one a year until at least 2020.

I'm impressed at how quickly they went from purchasing LucasFilm to getting a new (and good) Star Wars movie out. Since it isn't the same production team on each project, the actual movie makers are getting time between projects, so no worries about fatigue on their part.
...uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh, I know I should have faith given how much I liked "The Force Awakens" but those Red Letter Media reviews still leave me with paranoia on that subject.
It's not George Lucas, so any relation to the prequel trilogy for quality purposes is irrelevant.
True, here's hoping we get the first GOOD live action Star Wars prequel!
lol if you think Disney got into the Star Wars business to tell stories with moving pictures. It's all about the benjamins. As fast as possible, until we get bored and stop throwing money at them.
If anything, I'm impressed they didn't just stick with the George Lucas model of a million new things! to sell toys and actually hired people who want to tell stories.
But yeah, they made an expensive investment and as well as The Force Awakens did, they haven't seen a profit yet. We're just getting started.
This just reminds me how upset I am that 1313 was shelved.
