[Comics] What Comics are you Currently Reading Thread

I've been hyped for Captain Marvel, both in books and the movie, but now that I'm reading some of this stuff ... I don't think I like her that much. Maybe it's from coming off Ms. Marvel, but Carol sure likes to shirk responsibility and be a dick to people. It feels like she'd be better off roaming around with the Guardians of the Galaxy, but this new run with her in command of Alpha Flight (Earth defense) where people are relying on her, she doesn't seem to fit the role.

I don't know; maybe I should stick to checking out recent comics that are highly recommended instead of what I think looks cool.

EDIT: Okay, amendments to that. No one's recommended A-Force to me, but I'm liking it a lot. But it's also co-written by Ms. Marvel's writer, so I'm not super surprised.

From what I understand Captain Marvel's been in pretty bad hands since Marvel Now started. Apparently if you go back a few years it's a better series.

They rebooted her this year, now with the writers of Agent Carter. I never watched that show, so I don't know if that's par the course or if they're just not a good fit for Captain Marvel.

But I like her better in A-Force, at least from the one issue I read.

Read the first issue of The Unbelievable Gwenpool. I begrudgingly and reluctantly liked it. I don't know; it feels really gimmicky and dumb, but I also laughed several times. It feels like a shtick that will get old fast (girl from our world gets sucked into Marvel universe and becomes zany mercenary since she thinks it's all fake, while the narrative takes potshots at Marvel establishment like Daredevil and the Avengers), but for now I'm in.

If I were ever stuck in to the Marvel universe, and knew I was there, the first thing I would do would be to seek out She-Hulk. Or more accurately Jennifer Walters. I'm going to need some legal muscle on my side if I'm going to survive. There has to be some precedents on beings just popping into existence in the middle of New York, and the rights thereof.

I wonder if there's ever been a courtroom story with Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters as opposing lawyers? If not, I'm surprised it's never been a thing.

In She Hulk's last solo series, She-Hulk represented Captain America against a lawsuit that had Matt Murdock (at Cap's behest) representing.

In general the nature of their practices means they rarely interact in court.

The first moments of issue 1 bring up the problem that Gwen has no ID or valid SS number for this universe. Gwen apparently isn't smart enough to think to go looking for She-Hulk, but I realized this morning that, being from our world, she knows everything about Marvel heroes, villains, organizations, etc. If knowledge is power, she's stronger than the Hulk ... but only if she knows how to use it, and it seems she's best at using it to identify who's played by who in Marvel movies.

It's in the second volume of the criminally short Charles Soule run of She-Hulk.

Checked out some more Marvel stuff.

Spider-man/Deadpool: From the title alone, it's obvious this title was made to cash in on how amusing Spider-man and Deadpool can be together. Unfortunately the book itself also feels like a cash-in. Deadpool isn't funny and CEO Peter Parker is a stick in the mud. There are four or five Deadpool titles running right now and three or four Spider-man ones, and probably each of them capture the characters better.

All New, All Different Avengers: Same problem as above. The writers of this mash-up aren't really capturing the right tone. The first page being used for a full panel of Kamala Khan pointing a giant-sized finger at Nova and shouting, "You're a JERK!" was a good start, but it kinda flops. It could get better later; from what I'm told, the other teammates know something weird is going on with Vision but don't really want details, and I'm guessing that ties in with the bizarre Vision comic that's pretty much Vision in a 50s sitcom. That title I'll read; this one not so much.

Spider-Gwen: Gwen Stacy gets bit by radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker. Peter wants to be strong too, so turns himself into the Lizard and dies. Gwen is this universe's Spider-woman.

BUT if that wasn't crazy enough--Ben Grimm is a beat cop, Foggy is a detective, Matt Murdock is Wilson Fisk's lawyer, Punisher is a cop on the edge. I'm totally into this. Gwen does the kind of quipping and flips and leaps that Spider-man used to be cool about. It's actually a fun comic, though she has the same Spider-man problem of too many people seeing her face.

Only other problem it carries over from older Spider-man stuff is that there seem to be crossovers and shit that tie in with it, like Spiderverse and some current Spider-woman crazy shit. I'm not falling for that crap again, so we'll see if I stick with this.

Tried reading Astonishing Ant-Man. Made it through 8 issues, but ugh, it was kind of a slog. I'd like to know how the situation resolves what with his daughter going supervillain-for-hire, and the punch-clock-villain banter is amusing, but almost everything else in this series is tedious, plus I don't know what it is about it, but I hate the color palette. Feels washed out and way too orange.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: I think this is just not for me. Not sure why. A genius kid who's frustrated by her surroundings and afraid of turning into a super-being if she ever encounters the Terrigen mists befriends a giant fiery red dinosaur and they form a superhero team. I should be loving this, but I'm not feeling it. Nothing wrong with the writing either. I want to feel into it, I do like stuff in it, but it's not gelling with me for some reason.

Marvel's been diversifying pretty hard the last year or so. Captain America is Red Falcon, Thor is a woman, Ms. Marvel, more female-centric teams, etc. Not saying it's a bad thing, of course, but it's definitely a trend for them right now.

I should've edited that I looked it up after posting that :p. I see it had a 12-issue run.

It's interesting they're pulling the Inhumans stuff into the new one as a personal threat rather than the universe-changing event it's been for other characters. It's also a slow book, with a lot of panels much bigger than they need to be, splash panels, etc. Maybe I'll check it out later if it grows a bit, and if it sticks around. I don't know what kind of sales are needed for a comic book to state in print these days.

Stumbled across this panel in one of the Batman Adventures collections I bought recently. I immediately felt it needed to be meme'd.

Gwenpool #2 was funny as the first. Now I see why--it's written by the Dr. McNinja writer.
Gwenpool is what happens when a shitty concept gets picked up by a great writer. I love it.

Here's what I've been reading:

DC:
JUSTICE LEAGUE: DARKSIED WAR: Holy shit, this event was absolutely painful. The last issue was so bad it was almost funny. Which was odd considering...

DC REBIRTH: Comfy as hell. I loved it.
Green Arrow/Black Canary romance is coming back, Aquaman and Mera are getting married and Wally West is back! I don't care much about the Watchmen shit, but oh well.

Marvel:
BLACK PANTHER: Meh. I want to like it. Very wordy. Going to give it a few more issues.

MOON-GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR: It's cute.

TOTALLY AWESOME HULK: So much fun and drawn by Cho. The first arc was great and had some amazing Miles and She-Hulk moments.

VISION: I love it so much. So eerie and so well thought out. Last issue was okay, but the last page made up for the entire issue.

DEADPOOL/SPIDER-MAN: Both Deadpool and Spidey are written so well. I definitely prefer it to Amazing Spider-Man as Peter is actually acting like Peter and not Tony Stark. Also, last issue the bit with
Mephisto was amazing. I wasn't expecting it at all and really hope it leads to them fixing what One More Day ruined.
Has anyone picked up The Fix yet?? I recommend it. It's amazing.

Image:
The Fix: So good, I've actually been passing around the first two issues at work because it's so well done and the art is fantastic. Nick Spencer is getting a lot of hate right now, but him and Steve Lieber can do no wrong together.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand the first two facts make me overlook the utterly stupid fact, I am confident in this being good. I kinda feel bad for NU52 Superman though, it wasn't HIS fault his writers made him terrible. I half-expect some Overman shit with him where him comes out of the nothing with a giant bomb to kill everyone.

I just want Superboy Prime back. This is the perfect time for him to come in and start some trouble.

Some mysterious guy in Rebirth said to the original Superman something like, "He's not who you think he is." Basically hinting nu52 Superman was someone else. Maybe the original Kon? Maybe Superboy Prime? Maybe Captain America as a Nazi? Who knows?!
