Hardcore Henry

Weird, weird, weird. The action was intense but at times incoherent. I get that's the gimmick. I get it. But it's like basically an entire movie filmed in shakey-cam. Essentially, if you put Mirror's Edge, Grand Theft Auto V, Terminator, Crank, and Bourne Identity in a blender and hit frappe, then poured that into an rock tumbler, it's what you'd get.

Dr. Strange or how I learned to stop worrying and love the mighty whitey (jk, couldn't think of a better joke title this isn't going to be ONE OF THOSE posts)

Overall pretty good. Not my favorite marvel movie though. Benjamin Camterstich did fine. His accent seemed better and more fitting than I initially thought from the trailers. The action sequences were really fun. A little of the pacing near the end seemed too quick than what I like.

I mean, basically from the moment he puts on the eye of agamotto the movie is more or less in real time. He puts it on, they get attacked, he gets kicked into NYC and gets his cape, mid movie fight happens, Mordo is sad, a wild third act appears, he's here to bargan DEAD and now we're done!

I did like his power progression. I was expecting him to basically be Goku and master things with a snap but he actually struggled and was able to use his limited knowledge of magic in creative ways which was nice.

Real solid B+ if you ask me, which you didn't.

It occurs to me that the eternity Strange spent with Dormmamu may have honed his powers to Sorcerer Supreme levels. When you use a shield spell a million times, even if it ultimately fails every single time, you're still probably going to end up really freaking good at that shield spell. Same with any other spells Strange used during his token resistances against Dormmamu.

Edge of Tomorrow

Watched this again recently because I'm on something of a sci-fi kick lately. This movie is still great. Not award-winning amazing or anything, just a really fun action flick.

It's the kind of movie I heard one person describe once: you'll be talking to a friend who says, "What's that Tom Cruise movie that's like Groundhog Day and he dies a lot?" You'll say, "Oh yeah, Edge of Tomorrow. That's a cool movie. Let's watch it."

The end doesn't make any sense, but up until that point, I really like it.

I did notice that one time he did pretty well with blocking stuff with his shields. I was wondering if he would comment on that.

I don't know. It made sense to me.

After killing the Omega, he absorbed its blood, just like he did with the Alpha that started the whole movie. So his day was reset again. Except this time, since the Omega was dead and couldn't reset the day itself, the invasion was easily defeated. Because, as it was stated by the scientist guy, the aliens are more like one big organism. He Tom Cruise managed to cut off the head.

That's not the part I mean.. I mean

After all that, when the day reset, it reset back TWO days instead of one, back to him waking up on the helicopter before he met the general and got busted down for desertion, for no other reason than it makes it so Cruise's character can have a happy ending.

Because that's where his timeline began to intersect the aliens' timeline. Only by trying to blackmail the general and getting put in the infantry did he come into contact with the Mimics, otherwise he'd have never intersected them. The timeline reset to that point.

Yeah, I gotta agree with Gas on this one. It kinda breaks the internal rules of the story.

Of course, now that I've seen Hardcore Henry... and I'm terrible... I kind of want to see Marvel hire that director for a Marvel One-Shot: "Hardcore Bucky", an R-rated gonzo first person view of one of The Winter Soldier's crazier assignments against a member of Russian Organized Crime.

What about "Hardcore Hawkeye", with a crazy first-person take on Hawkeye having to fight a Russian gang in an apartment building?

No, no, that'd have to be with Black Widow and set in Budapest.

I know it's not a commercially viable idea, I just think it would be cool to see. I have a lot of ideas that I and no one else would enjoy.

What if they did like like one of the mini-releases, like they did before Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter? I don't think I'd want to sit through a full-length feature, but maybe a short film.

Just got back from seeing Doctor Strange. Really liked it. Still depressed about everything in life, especially my own (or lack there of).

Ghostbusters (2016)

It wasn't awful, but it wasn't good. Part of the problem was that all 4 main characters were "the comic relief" - Kristen Wiig was the awkward, self-conscious comic relief, Melissa MacCarthy was the angry, physical comic relief, Kate McKinnon was the random, kind of twisted comic relief, and Leslie Jones was the loud, ethnic, street-smart comic relief. Since they were all "the funny one", they lacked a straight to play off of, and it really highlighted how well the original cast did. Venkman was a sleazy con-man type who could be audacious; Ray was idealistic, naive, and eager; Egon was practical, brilliant, and often off in his own little world. They played off each other well. This cast generally just didn't. For me, the comedic bright spot was Chris Hemsworth as beautiful brainless Kevin. He cracked me up. Overall, though, the movie was just kind of mediocre and a lot of that has to fall on Paul Feig, the director, even though I think very highly of some of his other work with the same people. Also, it relied way too heavy on the sliming gag and the CGI rave monsters never felt scary or real in the way that the Terror Dogs, Slimer, or ghosts in Ghostbusters did.

Despite it being impossible for me to NOT think its similar to Kevin and Kell, I still love this film-ALTHOUGH-thought it weird seeing Judy cover the carrots in newspaper at first-BUT-turns out that's a thing. Usually for deep winter storage, but maybe they don't want to waste time asking and just had a bunch of newspaper, plus either way they were going to wash them off so its all whatevs!

That popsicle stick was the symbol of summer for me, now they got nobody host-wise. Closest thing is when the cast of Henry Danger or the Thundermans does some stupid commercial spot.

Just came back from Doctor Strange. That was fantastic.

When it comes to my favourite Marvel films, I have a soft spot for the first Avengers film and the second Captain America (Winter Soldier). Strange easily joins them in my Soft Spots Heaven.

Arrival was excellent. The trailer showed me a science fiction movie and that's what it is; not action/adventure dressed as sci-fi, not horror dressed as sci-fi. A really interesting look at language and complexities of character. The movie leaves a lot up to discussion, but it's engaging from start to finish if the idea of a story about translating an alien language, and thus the way their minds work, sounds like an intriguing plot. I can see this movie being divisive if enough people go to it.

We don't normally see movies like this in the theaters, because of audience crap that wouldn't be annoying during a big loud movie like Doctor Strange, but would be during a quiet, more thoughtful movie like Arrival. Overall, this time the audience was pretty good ...

Except some guy sat next to me when there were several seats open to my right. And of course it was the one guy whose cell phone rang during the movie. Did nothing to stop it or silence it. I turned to him to say something, then saw this glazed look in his eyes like he wasn't totally there, so I figured he wasn't. He then immediately checked his phone to see who had called him, so I was wrong, he was just rude.

This is my favorite kind of movie. I want it in my veins. Waiting for my buddy to get back from his trip to go see it.

The author of the original short story, Ted Chiang, is a really well-regarded sci-fi author.

The Searchers: John Wayne, Jeffery Hunter, and Natalie Wood
i.e. the movie that SHOULD have won the Oscar for John Wayne. A very tight, visceral look at vengeance and racism. It had to be the most serious Western movie made to that date. But thank God for Ward Bond as The Reverend Captian Samuel Johnson Clayton. A comic relief bad ass.

If you have never seen this film add it to your bucket list now.
