My grandfather just came to visit me at work, which is always a pleasant surprise. We chatted for a bit and he gave me an envelope, letting me know that the court battle over my great grandfather's (my deceased grandmother's father, also long deceased) stolen oil royalties has finally concluded, and successfully. My family's a prolific bunch, so the reparations are split 20-someodd ways, but while my chunk isn't life-changing, it's nice to have this year's IRA contribution taken care of with a little left over to maybe get a little somethin-somethin for myself.

That would be a nice surprise!

First extended period of being up in the daylight in years, not counting vacation. I was amazed at how much I could squeeze into the day when I wasn't wasting a third of it waiting for things to open (and by then I was too tired, so I dropped the whole thing.)

Haven't cooked in months, and I guess this is a good time to get back to that. About to start a batch of the Good Eats baked beans (AKA The Once and Future Beans.) They'll be ready by breakfast time in the morning. :D

Today at advanced archery class we did a review and went over each step of our shot one by one. I... think I found the weakest part of my shot because when it became time to focus on this particular part, and I REALLY paid attention to what I was doing, I did this.

10 years ago I built a media MicroPC for my living room, one month before the WDTV live! came out and allegedly would do everything the media PC would do for $100, and with a remote instead of a kb/mouse. So I got the WDTV and sold the PC to my work for $250 (barely over parts costs) to be used as an internet PC in a studio for a station we just bought.

Now, 10 years later, the 40 gig seagate HD in that PC finally died. There's not much point into fixing up the computer for the office, as it can only handle 2 gigs of ram, and XP is too much of a security liability to allow to be a websurfing PC anymore (I'd have done away with it earlier except that station no longer has live DJs to use that PC). So, it's officially retired. As it was just going to be tossed out, I took it home with me.

But the only thing wrong with it was the HD, so I yanked an 80 gig out of another old dead machine at the house, stuck it in, reloaded XP from a disk I have... And it's back in business. And because it's a fresh install with no updates and no other programs, it boots up as fast as my gaming PC does with a SSD

I've long since fallen out of love with the WDTV in favor of the chromecast, and now I'm falling out of love with the chromecast because of its stupid steadfast refusal to natively play any format other than mp4 (and all the trendy pirates are into MKVs these days), and the only good transcoding app (VideoStream) has been shitty lately as well.

So now, we've come full circle. I'm gonna stick it on my living room TV, and its only job will be to use VLC to play my shows and movies. Well, assuming it can handle 1080p. I'll have to test that.

Well I spent the morning making my first resume in years. Just in case. It's not that I haven't had anything, but being in academia, I usually maintained a CV instead. I know--you Euros (and maybe Canadians) use the words interchangeably, but at least in the US, they're different. A CV is longer and more detailed. 10-20 pages isn't unusual for an academic CV.

Yeah, I don't have a resume. The last time I made one was in undergrad. I should see if have a copy - that'd be a laugh.

Work experience:
-Farming
-McDonalds
-Psych Ward CNA

Starting the job hunt with what I know, so I went out hitting up local hotels this morning. I had a plan on who I was going to check on before I left. But just as I left the first one, I remembered there was another hotel between that one and the second one on my list...

THAT one has a full time auditor that's about to move out of state. AND they may be changing their PMS software to what I used at my last job. AGM was practically begging me to get an application in TODAY. So I did. And interviewed a couple hours later. And now Im just waiting on background and drug screen results. Here's hoping. There's nothing I can do to change what's already happened 15-20 years ago, and all of the work history on that application is since then. My references would all but shout "HIRE HIM!" if called. :)

Free ice cream at work today. Reminds me of why I stick with this job :p

Incidentally, Blue Bell's new "Sweet and salty crunch" flavor is good.

But aren't they all.

Anyway, this one is vanilla ice cream, with chocolate chunks, chocolate covered pretzel bites, and chocolate covered almonds.

Yum.
