Whine like a baby, now with 500% more drama!

So Teamviewer still claims that they only depend on whether you've selected "commercial use" or "personal and commercial use" upon installation, as well as using windows server. Not sure that I trust that, but they do have a process to remove that free commercial trial expiration:

https://www.teamviewer.com/en/support/personal-use-verification/

However it sounds like they've completely dropped all support for free usage (no phone, email, or forum support), have changed their software to lock people out, and this form indicates that it "could" take up to 30days for a response. The form requires a log file of your teamviewer usage.

It's been years since I've used it, but I think I'd shy away from Teamviewer from now on. There are other solutions, and while few are as easy as teamviewer, they are clearly tightening the noose and forcing more people down the paid path.

My guess is that eventually, their servers will stop accepting connections from older versions, so even those who don't upgrade or choose to install previous versions will eventually become locked out.

Yeah, it'll be slightly less convenient to go back to using VNC, but if Teamviewer tightens its grip too much, that's what I'll end up doing.

Just look at porn on your cell phone like a normal person :p
Porn?! I wish! If it were porn there would be no problem! No, what I need to use teamviewer for is an abnormality, one so unbelievable that it must be hidden from the public at all cost. You see...

Do I need a public ip address to use vnc? I could use google remote desktop but it is very slooow.
You do need a fixed IP address (or a dynamic DNS provider, which usually costs money these days), and then you have to forward ports in your router. Then you would connect to the machine.

Another alternative might be AnyDesk
https://anydesk.com/remote-desktop

I haven't tried it myself, but it seems to have similar functions to teamviewer (no static IP/port forwarding needed). Also free for private use.

I abandoned all use and recommendation of Teamviewer once I started hearing about its potential security issues.

Well, you need to know what the public IP address is, and you need to have enough control over the machine that has the public IP address in order to forward the connection to whichever computer you want to connect to.

If you need a static IP address, and assuming this is to a windows computer, why not just forward the ports for Remote Desktop Connection? Why do you need a 3rd-party provider?

For my part, because RDP always locks the desktop when you disconnect, which stops things from working on my empyrion server. At least Teamviewer (and, I assume, Anydesk) will let you choose whether that happens or not (as does VNC).

I can still access my home pc with the chrome app. That's all I need for now.

Was more of an emergency than a crunch. I don't do "crunch" any more. If a job consistently needs more than 40+ hours of work out of me every week, they either need to hire more people, or learn to schedule better. I train my employers to accept reasonable expectations.

That said, I sent out an email to the end user POCs at 3:00am that essentially said "This software revision is not backwards compatible. Users will begin logging in at 7am, and if they haven't performed the required update, their software will not work. PLEASE DO NOT CALL ME with any problems until you have confirmed that the user is on the correct version of the application".

Then, I took my dog to the vet, finally getting to bed at 6am.

Guess who called at 9, telling me that users were having trouble with the software?

Julie is getting recommended by both me and her therapist that she needs to find a new job where she's not reading about horrific local crimes or listening to witness/suspect interviews for court and investigations.

The catch is that we work together and my boss has kinda jumped through hoops to make things work for her, so she and I both feel weird about this. I think she should have a conversation with him about it first just to let him know she's being advised that this content is negatively affecting her health just to see if maybe there's a solution to be had.

But I can't think of one. Every contract we have deals with awful stuff. I feel like I've lied to our boss when I said things were going well for her. My department is exploding thanks to Trump's incompetence, so I don't know how much fuel this throws on the fire. I do know that if Julie quits and her partner on the contract has to do it alone, she will also quit because this is just a job for extra money to her (her husband is well off). So then we have a department down and no one to fill the gap, so I think my boss will want to make accommodations ... except Julie just wants off the contract.

I foresee a big mess in the future. Julie was sticking it out until we got a house, but that might not be for a long time. She also likes the 10-minute commute and neither wants a long one again not to return to DC's hellish metro system that messes her up physically and mentally.

There just doesn't seem to be any good solution in all this. On some level, there's going to have to be something she dislikes, but I don't know how to make that manageable for her. Before, it was the commute forcing her to take anti-anxiety meds, now it's work itself. Her last job was too lax to the point she was depressed, this one is too busy. The only clear advantage is she's no longer being physically injured like on the public transit by people shoving her, so this seemed like a win to me? But it feels like she's forgotten.

We had a long conversation about all this yesterday, and neither of us could figure out what's going to work for her.

Edit: eeeeeg that was long

Edit edit: I guess having her talk to her manager before our boss is a good stepping stone. She says she's not doing it today, which also says she's not doing it this week, which probably means she's going to put it off since she'd rather deal with the anxiety from the work than the anxiety of talking about the anxiety. #iknowthatfeelbro

I've been shuffled off to a new nutritionist/dietician/"medical professional", and my first appointment with them is this afternoon.
I really don't want to go. I don't want to have to train someone else to treat me with the slightest modicum of respect, and I don't have the mental capacity to handle being treated the way medical peeps normally treat me (that is to say, like shit).

Ug.

So for my birthday, my work sent me a voucher for a cinema movie of my choice.

Today, I find out that the only cinema where they take said voucher in my city is the arthouse one. Which is not really my thing. I'm not even that much of a movie guy to begin with. So that's kind of lame.

You must establish dominance and protect your domain, otherwise it becomes his house.

Challenge the centipede to a duel.
Not a good idea. It would probably best her easily at hand to hand to hand to hand to hand to hand to hand to hand to hand to hand to hand combat.
