Movie News & Miscellany

One of the saddest parts is that I was reading this has happened more than we realize. Obviously, Brandon Lee is the first one that comes to mind, but there have been more since. You'd think by now they would have found a safer way to make it look like a gun is firing.

CGI muzzle flash. Dub the sound of the gunshot in later. Or failing that keep the current method but make sure that when the prop gun is fired no-one is standing in a position where they could be shot if the gun misfires.

Over on corridor crew they show there is a safer way, just using spring loaded guns synced to a light, with cgi muzzle flash added in later (which is something they usually still do even when using blanks).

I didn't realize it happened so often either, and that seems like a huge problem from the prop department, or whoever is in charge of set safety. If you are going to use real guns firing blanks they need to be treated as dangerous and make sure your actors and anyone else that handles them knows this. They clearly didn't, and now one person is dead, one person injured and one more very likely psychologically scarred

Converting a gun to an electric gun in this fashion destroys all the gun's inherent value and many guns are pulled from private armories that rent them out, not owned by the production company. As such, many owners simply aren't willing to do this conversion to rare or expensive pieces because at some point they intend to unload them to another dealer.

I believe @Ravenpoe meant Softair guns.

Even blanks can kill, as the one actor who put a gun loaded with blanks to his own head and pulled the trigger can attest. Well, no, he can't... but... you get it.

Apparently this was the latest in a string of issues this movie has been having:
Alec Baldwin 'Rust' camera crew walked off the set in protest before the fatal shooting
"A colleague was so alarmed by the prop gun misfires that he sent a text message to the unit production manager. 'We've now had 3 accidental discharges. This is super unsafe,' according to a copy of the message reviewed by The Times. "

Three accidental discharges before the fatal shooting. Holy fuck, the movie industry needs to change.

Apparently my roommates worked on a film with Dave Halls: the Assistant Director on Rust that gave Baldwin the loaded gun and said “cold gun”. This kind of negligence is basically his M.O.
On the film they worked with him on he invited a bunch of locals to show to be in the film and encouraged them to bring their own guns and weapons from home for the scene. That was just one thing he did. He is notorious for having very little safety on sets.

It just keeps getting worse:

A number of crew members had taken prop guns from the New Mexico set of the indie Western — including the gun that killed Hutchins — to go “plinking,” a hobby in which people shoot at beer cans with live ammunition to pass the time, the insider said. (TheWrap)

I had heard about the plinking, but am still not sure it has been verified.
Perfect opportunity for a live round to be left behind in the chamber even after the magazine has been removed, though.

Yeah, the right are taking a lot of opportunities to score political jabs. it is a bit disgusting and shows the lack of empathy that seems to divide the left and right these days.

I always thought it was kind of a dick move for the animated version of the second ghostbusters to call itself "the Real Ghostbusters" just because the filmation Ghostbusters came out five DAYS before it.

So I guess even GRRM was fucking done with the show post season 5. Apparently the showrunners were sick of making it then too.

Maybe instead of torpedoing your insanely famous show into irrelevancy you could hire new showrunners who are interested in making your show, Jesus Christ.

A lot has been blamed on GRRM not finishing the books, but the showrunners didn't bother to follow his templates in the least post season 5.

The showrunners wanting to ditch was old news, wasn't it?

As i recall HBO even offered them more money, but they still refused (i tihnk they wanted to do Star Wars).

Yes. And then their reputation went to shit for the way they rushed the end of GoT (rightfully so), and Disney told them to piss off.

Even before they ran out of book they were cutting threads that would have connected to an ending that made sense. It is a damn shame they didn't really care about the story or characters bc the show was popular enough that it could have transitioned into being a never ending soap opera and that would have been better than the series we got. Wouldn't mind if it was remade ten years from now if the new show didn't make Euron a generic idiot

GRRM is a TV Show writer, and has never had to write a coherent ending in his entire life because his shows are usually cancelled as opposed to ended.

The first three of so books are great, by the last one you get the feeling GRR doesn't know how it where to connect everything either
4 & 5 grew on me, I'm gonna reread them with one of those combined ebooks to see if the pacing is any better but I don't think there was much that could have followed the climaxes of 3 without feeling like a letdown. All the worldbuilding setting up the eldritch horror behind the return of magic still has got me looking forward to book 6
