Mr. Z knew him from his old job, and told me some funny stories over the years. I had no idea he was ill. I feel bad for his wife, who would often come in with him. (She used to joke that he was the cheapest man to ever exist. He would come to do his banking in person just for the free coffee.)

I think the only time I ever remember hearing him speak in his own voice was in an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Right there with Madden as the aspect of Outrage and Lewis Black as Anger, his was the voice of Sarcasm.

I just remembered a time when Gilbert Gottfried was on I think CBC. Early in the night, they ran out of time for a proper interview with him (promoting his show at the local casino). Late at night, they rolled the b-footage of the whole thing. And oh my god.

I think someone informed Gottfried that they ran out of time. And what followed was him endlessly roasting Maritime news, joking that we had the most boring news stories that HAD to air over his interview promoting his show.

I don't remember the specifics of it, but it was stuff like "And over in this tiny town with a population of less than 5 people, a new calf was born today. We have time for that, but we don't have time to interview Gilbert Gottfried."

And he just went on and on and on like this for at least 5 minutes. The show hosts were laughing so hard, they were nearly falling out of their chairs.

Always wished I could find that footage again. I can't remember if it was CTV or CBC. MAYBE Global?

That feeling when you've lost complete control of the interview and just say "Fuck it, we're tossing the script."

This felt like Gottfried saying to himself, "Screw it. Most people who know me will never see this, so I'm going scorched Earth on this interview."

I can understand that. Thing is, he had an extremely loud, obnoxious voice. BUT, he often played loud, obnoxious characters. He was a character actor. You knew exactly what kind of character to expect if Gilbert Gottfried is cast.

Just a reminder that in the direct to video Aladdin sequel Return of Jafar (which is awful but as a kid I fucking loved it) they decided that Gilbert Gottfried needed not one, but two songs.

Just learned like yesterday that he did have a normal speaking voice and just chose to do this all the time

He actually got upset at Howard Stern once for playing an answering machine message he left in his normal voice over the air. Gilbert was pretty dedicated to never dropping character while in public, it was his whole shtick.

Totally get him getting bothered by that. In restrospect it should have been obvious but it's just more fun to believe

Looking into some of his sketches I came across the story of the Aristocrats joke that he told at Hugh Hefner's roast to recover from some 9/11 jokes (this back in 2001 btw). I think I had heard OF the joke but I never had actually heard the joke. I found a youtube audio recording of it... and I think I nearly died laughing. I was hurting so much in my abs that I had to pause the joke several times just to recover. I knew it was considered the filthiest joke ever told but I was still not prepared.
You can look it up if you want to, but be warned as I don't think there is any joke more NSFW as that joke.

I might be misremembering since I haven't seen the movie in like 20 years but I remember there being a part where they pretty viciously mock Robin Williams for using parts of the Aristocrats he heard elsewhere.
