How in the absolute Consti-tarn-tution is anyone going to frame this as anything other than a flagrant violation of Amendment Uno? Or is SCOTUS going to somehow find that this doesn't violate the separation of Church and State?

It’s been pretty openly just the copper/zinc lobbies keeping them alive for a long time now. I just didn’t expect Trump to be the one to kill it (I still think hes just asking for a bribe).

Yeah, most countries don't accept/make 1 and 2 eurocent coins anymore either, and nobody misses them.
This may actually be something sensible T does. Must be accidental.

I wonder how many people even know that the US used to have a half-cent coin. It was discontinued in 1857.

The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics has an inflation calculator, but it only goes back to 1913. A half-cent back in 1913 would be worth 16 cents today, and 1857 is 50% longer back in time.

In other words, when the half-penny was discontinued, it was worth more way more than a dime is today. It was probably worth more than a quarter is today. The US shouldn't just be getting rid of pennies, we should be getting rid of nickels and dimes, too. Possibly all coins under a dollar.

I'm most annoyed by the fact that, even though I am against this (though as an amateur numismatist I freely admit it is purely from a nostalgia point of view), this is objectively a good way to trim some fat that has probably been a long time coming, but Trump is going to be the one who gets credit for implementing it. It's going to become a "trains on time" moment for him.
