The Disney Thread: For Everything Concerning the House of Mouse

Andor, Season 2
I don’t mind that they are starting to use music from real bands in the trailers for the SW shows. I still love the Huttese cover of Major Tom in the Skeleton Crew trailer. I’d enjoy seeing them used in the actual shows too, but I won’t be disappointed if they just keep them in the trailers for now.

Kathleen Kennedy with Lucas Arts is supposedly retiring this year. It’s sparked some heated debates on many threads announcing such. The number of toxic fans with it out for Kennedy is staggering. Personally, I think the hate is misplaced. The toxic fans blame her for all the not-so-great projects post Lucas but never give her credit for the good ones.
The most ridiculous ones I’ve seen are the “Woke agenda” guys who claim that Star Wars is crashing and burning because of all the LGBTQ and DEI that they claim Disney is jamming down our throats. Firstly, pretty sure none of them even knew what DEI was until Trump starting blaming it for plane crashes. And secondly, I don’t think “I like my Star Wars so long as it’s White and Straight” is the best way to enter any conversation.

They’re also currently losing their minds over a black samurai in the latest Assassin’s Creed.

They blame liberalism and feminism because girls won’t talk to them. It never occurs to these gooners that they might just be assholes.

This continues to be such a bizarre strategy, but if it can put them into the hands of someone competent, then go for it.

I see this as more of a, "We shouldn't have to host this stuff online if we're not making (enough) money off it any more" kind of thing, but that doesn't make it any less of a dick move. It would be like if, when The Matrix becomes public domain in 2094 (yes, really), Warner Brothers (or its successor(s)) were to announce, "Yeah, we really needed the space in our archival storage, so we burned all the negatives and remaining prints."
(i.e., "If we can't make money off it any longer, then we'll make it so nobody else can, either.")

My take? This is Zaslav cutting out stuff he doesn't want to be associated with because it doesn't fit the mold of what he considers the company to be. This is why he's perfectly willing to kowtow to Rowling to get a Harry Potter TV reboot going despite the enormous backlash and damage the brand has taken over the years, but flinches the SECOND he has to spend a dime on anything animated that isn't aimed at 13-30 year old men.

There's also just some good ol' vulture capitalism going on. Zaslav selling off brands for quick cash to meet his contract obligations in order to get all his bonuses so he can bounce the second he can.

Oh the chuds have known about DEI for awhile now. Then before that they were really upset about any whiff of “woke.” Probably were up in arms about CRT before that. For a bunch of reactionary bigots they are very willing to use the new terminology. So long as the new terminology doesn’t acknowledge the basic human dignity of a group of people.

Not to even mention that a black samurai is historically accurate
That Wikipedia page and it's discussion page are... Um.... "special", though.
Feel free to use the wayback machine or other internet history options to check what it looked like before this game was announced.
Yasuke was an arms bearer for Nobunaga. Whether or not he was a samurai is very much up for historical debate - much like "wearing plate and sitting on a horse" does not make one a knight, the official stance on what makes a samurai is different from popular perception and has changed over the centuries. By the standards of the era, he was not a samurai.
Much of the backlash is of course because of racism and so on, but eh. Not having a Japanese main character is a bit weird for a stealth assassination game set in feudal Japan.

The wiki page (by which i'm assuming their source/s do) makes the argument that at the time the title was loose enough that being given a house and a weapon could have qualified him.

But it is funny how at least 1 japanese depiction has him in full regalia but then he talk about how Nobunaga didn't manage to make him a TRUE samurai before dying:

If they can do that, why does it even matter what AssCreed calls him ?

Not having a Japanese main character is a bit weird for a stealth assassination game set in feudal Japan.
But the ninja character is japanese, isn't she ?

Yeah, remember how Assassin's Creed 1 took place in Jerusalem, and yet Altaïr was from Syria, and how everyone at the time of game release was up in arms about...

hold on... *checks notes* oh no one cared.

Also, just looked it up, and apparently he was also half Christian... which i'm assuming didn't mean part of the local Non-Chalcedonians, and yet he and everyone else around had teh same skin tone, which was way lighter then you'd find even now in that part of the world.

Sure, like I said, most of the criticism is 100% racist bigots being racist bigots. And to be clear, I personally don't care - I've never played any AC game.
Comparing to AC1 is a weak argument, though, because.... Well, it was the first game. The IP wasn't what it is now.
I can understand wanting an "outsider" from a gameplay/storytelling perspective, and so on. Choosing Yasuke might just have been a too-late and tonedeaf attempt at getting those sweet BLM dollars though, rather than any actual interest in the historical character.
