You can save the world. But

So here's a hypothetical. Let's suspend the laws of physics for a moment, and pretend that you have been given the key to better the entire world. Your vision of Utopia would come to pass, forever and ever. All you have to do is use the Key. But to do so, you would have to lose, either by destruction or death, the things in this life you cherish most.

Would you?

I can't picture a working utopia. There needs to be movement and motion, cycles in life that keep it running, feel like meaningful struggles, friends and enemies. A utopia world of perfection would have to be made up of machines, not human beings, and so has no purpose. People need to feel they're accomplishing something or are taken by despair. They need to feel like there is something to drive against, and so would drive against the utopic system if it existed. You'd have to lobotomize people.

I don't believe humans can exist in a world of true peace. We need to strive to make a better world, as others crash it down for their own selfishness.

I would not give up all I love and cherish to make a monstrosity that denies or destroys what humans are. I enjoy us too much. All the shit done is defined by the good, is defined by the shit, and so on and so on. The cycles must continue.

A world in chaos is what makes us relish that what is good on this Earth.

Pass.

I would do the inverse: Destroy the world to protect the sanctity of what I care about. I have no problem becoming a villain for the right reason.

So you're saying you would seek to cause the destruction of the planet, and all its inhabitants?

interesting....

I subscribe to the whole "this is the best of all possible worlds" thing, so any changes I would elect to make would be entirely superficial, and not worth giving up the people I cherish.

Although, I can assure you that this idea will be in my mind for the next few days. Perhaps I'll come back with a list of things I would change, but like I said: on the whole they would be superficial, and not worth the sacrifice anyhow..

Dr. Pangloss, I presume?

Hmm. I wasn't familiar with that reference. But I guess a a little bit, yeah.

What I cherish most is my ability to make of this world what I want. A magic "key" that will lock this world in a perpetual "utopia" conflicts pretty heavily with this. So if I were to use the key to create my utopia of a keyless world I would have to give up my will and accept my own hell of autonomy lost. But if I don't destroy it as soon as possible there would be too much of a risk of someone else using the key. That's a good question.

I would be all for this if it wasn't for having to lose the things I cherish most. My friends and family are the things that mean the most to me. If I lost them, my vision of utopia would not be fulfilled since I'd be completely alone rather than enjoying this incredible life with them.

I would do it, but then again I don't really have anybody that I can't let go of in my life. So fuck it, make the world a better place, I would do it.

Honestly, I'd do it too. What's a handful of lives compared to the untold billions that would benefit. Fucking Spock-ism. Needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

I would do it.

I'd probably kill myself out of despair afterwards, but I'd die with that small comfort of knowing I'm leaving the world a better place than how it was when I arrived.

EDIT: After posting this message I realized how much it contrasts with my postcount.

Finally, someone not so self involved.
im not 'self involved' I just dont think there is a possible utopia
It's not a matter of what you believe is possible, in a hypothetical situation.

Oh and Bhamv, yeah that really doesn't suit you.

I think I'd do it. I don't know how many people would want to wake up to the Ecotopia type world that I'd love to see, but I think they'd grow to love it. In the long run, what I sacrifice wouldn't matter.

I don't know. A full-blown utopia where everyone is forever happy? Sure. Some sort of faux utopia of my idea of what it should be like? heck no.

You know, I like free will. I think it's a good thing. I'd be super-pissed if I knew it would be taken away from me. I assume most people would feel the same way. That's why, even without Crone's caveat, I probably wouldn't impose my view of Utopia on people. Just because it's my idealized world doesn't mean it's everyone else's. The fact that people in this thread consider that selfish seems somewhat strange to me.

To elaborate now that I've thought about it.

I could not give up my family, my pets back home, and my closest friends, no matter the cost. They have done more for me and helped me through so much that I could not let them fade away for any amount of happiness on my part, let alone the rest of the globe.

I'd do it.

Sure I'd have to sacrifice my mom, but I'm sure my girlfriend would appreciate the promotion to "most cherished"

Fake answer: I'd achieve a zen like state where what I cherish most is nothingness.

real answer: I'd probably do it. I'd prefer that what I cherish most simply disappears with me.
