Okay, a friend of mine has been talking to a guy online and they both now want to meet. But she's very leery, of course. She has a given name, location, birth date and profession but can find nothing online for this guy. I've been looking also and have found nothing. Now, you'd think that a lawyer in New York City would have some web presence, even if it were to advertise. But I find nothing.

She wants to do a little checking before they meet so I'm putting some information out there. If you are interested in doing this with me send me a PM and I'll give the personal information that I won't put in here.

He's a lawyer in New York named Jack Buchanan. That's all I'm putting publicly.

I did a search for all lawyers in New York with the last name Buchanan and I couldn't find him but I will keep looking.

Here is what came up when i searched by the last name you gave.

Someone lying on the internet? I am shocked, SHOCKED.

Personally, my best advice would be for your friend to just meet him. HOWEVER, take the usual precautions when it comes to internet dating:

1) Take her own car/transportation; don't have him pick her up.
2) Meet in a public place.
3) Make it short. A coffee or something.

I'd already be a little leery if you can't find any information on the guy, though. Red flags would include if he contacts her only on cellphone (no home number sometimes MIGHT mean he's married). But if you can't find the guy at all, then yeah, that's another big red flag.

Jack is usually a nickname. Maybe he has a different first name.

It's his name, not a nickname. I've already found his home town, that he has two kids, possibly a sister, and the name of his wife. I don't yet know if he's still married.

Same information here. His oldest daughter was born in June of 2007 and the last post we have from him says his daughter is due and he's happily married.

Awww... hope your friend still goes on the date so she can ask him some awkward questions! Tell her to bring a spy camera!

Man I've hit a brick wall.

We found out a bit but nothing concrete on the marriage. This guy is an internet ghost.

Well well another interesting development in the life of Dave! Take notes! This is sitcom material baby, especially if it's a case of mistaken internet id

ThatNickGuy has good tips, I've meet lots of people though internet sites, good bad and married. Meet public and ask him how his wife is doing :) Then everyone can move on

Eh, just have her go on the date, absorb him, and rifle through his memories. Easy.

... I've played too much Prototype lately, haven't I?

Well, I see I'm late to the party.

But being in NYC I might just happen to be able to accidentally run into the guy...

....it's a small town.....

This has nothing to do with me, by the way. It's for a friend.
Sure it is. Have fun on your little internet date.;)

Seriously though, have someone call and ask for his wife. Easiest way to find out. Sounds to me like he's probably married.

I can't believe I hadn't thought of sooner, but:

That lawyer's a spy! *suddenly pictures a TF2 Spy wearing a Phoenix Wright mask*

He's not in the Cornell student/alumni directory but that doesn't prove anything.
Edit: Hmm it only does current students. nvm.
