Man that was one hell of a well-written goodbye, and hit the Batman persona on the nail, and should be used as a model for Bat-writers.

That would be Andy Kubert's style. I've never been much of a fan since his run on Xmen back in the day. Every single character looks the same and he has some really weird art style going on at times.

Cut out Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent without glasses in any ten comics, without their typical clothes, and you'd be hard to know who the fuck is who.

Now manga, manhua, while being cartoony, seem to be able to actually design a character, and keep his features across countless comics/artists. Take Berserk or Gantz, for example, facial features are easy to define, and even should a character have his hair shaven, one could tell who is who.

Every character is given a face shape, a distinctive nose, eyebrows, chin and etc, and its kept (there are exceptions, mind you, ala Akira Toryiama, Hellsing's growing/shrinking of body parts and facial features and every other hentai comic).

Or even manhua like Sea tiger, or BDs such as Thorgal have characters that have consistent features.

Now, mind you, some american comics, ala Preacher, have managed to have consitent characters that dont suddenly grow a square chin, then a dimple, then suddenly go balding and then get a short forehead, all in the same comic.

And yes, Im looking at you Jeff Matsuda and Wolverine.

Well, one of the first things I learned when I started to draw is that anime-style characters are easier to keep consistent, because in most styles, their most distinguishing feature is their hair.

Now. I was a big fan of Ken Akamatsu (don't judge me!), and then Hisashi Hirai stole my heart. Akamatsu at least did do variations on faces. One character's face might be taller, or anther's wider. Hirai ... not so much, although a lot of minor characters in shows like Gundam SEED or s-CRY-ed do depart the typical style. I started trying to emulate that, but it didn't really work out ...

Then I stopped trying to draw manga, spent four years doodling in a very cartoony style, eventually starting to emulate Kurz ... now I'm trying to break away from that, and I'm having a hard time establishing a style I'm happy with. I sort of have a cartoon style that I'm happy with, but any time I try to do something more realistic-looking ... even if I'm not going for ultra-realism ... it just falls flat, and doesn't work.

I kinda grew up with Seinen manga, which run away from the usual anime 101 that Gundam and most Shounen manga have, examples, take Vagabond

Lone Wolf and Cub

Berserk is slightly cartoony, but its pretty much different, other ones can be added like 20th century boys, Ghost in the Shell, Alive!, Death Note!, Trinity Blood, Full Metal Alchemist....


Heck, the most cartoony manga I like is nana, even then each character looks different, without needing clothes or a costume

While each one had an artist's own style, each character is consistent, heck, I could take the main characters, shave their heads, and take a mug shot of each and I owuld be able to tell everyone apart with no problem.

Now modern american comics? Cyclops, Bruce Wayne and the like change haircut every damn week it seems, and get a nose job, fatten up and or/lose weight.

Describing it as an American art style is perfectly valid. I'm Canadian, and even while talking about local artists, I'll refer to their style as either 'American' or 'Japanese.'

Now, perhaps you're making an entirely separate point for JCM. Maybe there's a trend. But in this case, it's not necessarily indicative of a bias.

I guess it was kind of troll-like for me to jump in the middle of a discussion, but I have seen USA-bashing from JCM ever since the Image boards.

I can't think of any other International folks on the board that consistently do that.
