after trigun outlaw star dammit! hell, before trigun dammit!
oh, and i'll back up a lot of what jja posted

Hmm

You did good starting with Cowboy Bebop, it sets a good bar to measure good and bad anime against. The thing to remember is anime, like American cartoons, have tons of different subject matter and themes.

Once you get a few series under your belt you might want to focus on a specific type of anime you like.

And to toss my recommendations in to the pot,

Trigun: This is the first series I watched start to finish. It does now and always will hold a special place for me. I watched it at a time in my life when I was really trying to find myself and the character of Vash really spoke to me with his ability to be a total fun-loving goofball but deadpan serious when he needed to be.

Coyote Ragtime Show: I would recommend this as a follow up to Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. It is a short, 13 episode series, about a crew of former space pirates getting together for one last big score all in the name of their former captain's daughter. Has good action, lots of heart, and ends on a high note.

Thats my two pesos.

Waaait... JONJON, you didn't include Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in that massive list? Thought it'd be right up your street.

I liked TTGL, but a lot of other super robot anime do exactly what it does and do it ten times better.

TTGL is great if you want to watch some excellent high-budget animation, but as a super robot show there are better choices (GaoGaiGar, New Getter Robo, Shin Mazinger, Mazinkaiser, etc).

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

also not anime, but I've been watching Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. :D Shameful I know, but entertaining and surprisingly well done for a kids show.

ttgl is a lot better if you watch it after you watch some of those other ones.

I'd second on Darker Than Black nice decent story over all.
The Full Metal Alchemist series with the movie.
Full Metal Panic and Second Raid
Eureka Seven-damn good storyline and is a whole lot damn better than Neon Genesis
Black Cat-if your up for some decent action paced anime despite some cheesy story telling.
Trinity Blood-good story even though it leaves a bit unfinished at the end
Samurai Champloo-fucking see it if you havent.
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex-awesome story
Baccano!-not a bad one either

Dennō Coil is great. a good way to describe it is probably 'ghost in the shell: SAC as a studio ghibli production'. kids messing around with augmented reality glasses, and the design of the show is awesome.

Gunbuster - Giant robots with fanservice and super-bittersweet ending
YES. VERY YES. And Diebuster, while not as good, I think helps make the first one even better.

Also, as a movie, I'd recommend Wings of Honneamise. One of the classics.

Since no one's mentioned them yet, I'd probably recommend One Piece and Bobobo Bo Bobobo.

One Piece is LONG, but it's one of those anime where you make a connection with every single character who comes along. It's funny, there are some great fights (some really wacky ones, too, which will sometimes intersperse in the 'badass' ones), and I was actually surprised by the number of touching moments in there. (Go for the subbed version, though...seriously.)

Bobobo is...well, there's really no way to say it. Think of a wackier Johnny Bravo where, instead of chasing women, he can hear the voices of hair, has made his main attack style the Hanage Shinken (Fist of the Nose-Hair), and just has crazy adventures. Really more of a goofy, 'wtf?' series, but I got a few good laughs out of it.

I third Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex. Two season TV show, one follow-up movie, all awesome.

Also, if you like being depressed and feel brave, Now and Then, Here and There. Make sure you have people in your life you who love you before you start watching it, though.

Last Exile is also highly recommended, and much less depressing.

Full Metal Panic is slapstick mecha-wartime-comedy-high-school-gags at its very best.

Have a bunch more, but those are a good start.

Full Metal Panic Fumoffu is slapstick mecha-wartime-comedy-high-school-gags at its very best.
Fixed. First season had some real terrible episodes and the third season was serious business.

Fumoffu, though, is a work of genius.

Fair enough, though the first season is pretty darn high on the comedic interludes. Fumoffu really only works because of the first season antics setting the pace to play off of.

A friend of mine let me borrow his set of Ghost in the Shell (the same friend who got me Cowboy Bebop for my birthday, in fact), so I'll probably be checking this one out before I see Trigun. I've seen one episode so far, and though it doesn't tickle my fancy quite as much as Cowboy Bebop did, it seems pretty cool.

I've always wanted to check out One Piece, though I'm not sure I'm up for that kind of time commitment. I'll might just pass on Bobobo Bo Bobobo though. I'm new to anime, as I said, and there's only so much weird I can take.

and just to reopen the wound...

:tear: :pout:

Man, that's almost on par with that poster of Seymour from Futurama.

Hmm..I cant really add more to the list of good anime,so im just gonna give you a list of animes that will break your heart.

Saikano - Young Girl loves a guy.Gets turned into a war machine but trys to stay human.

Hanbun No Tsuki Ga Noboru Sora - It's just fucking bittersweet.

Air - Guy on a Journey, meets special girl.

Soliquoguy, Trigun is going to surprise the hell out of you. Give it the chance to blow you away.
This. As soon as you can get your hands on Trigun, watch it. It's worth the time. :)[/QUOTE]

You know, I'm sure you're right. I've only seen a small snippet of a single episode in passing, but I a feeling that I'd love it.

The trouble is, as or right now I'm broke, and the friend who lent me Ghost in a Shell is really particular about what he lets me touch. Heck, he got me Cowboy Bebop for my birthday simply so that he wouldn't have to lend me his copies.

Can't complain, though .

Can you get Netflix?
Funny you should mention that. My brother was planning on getting me a subscription for my birthday, but then he had some trouble with his sales job, and lost a lot of money. He says he'll get it for me eventually, though.

It'll be the first thing on my list when I get the chance.

My only comment on this is that the actual stand-alone episodes and the plot episodes are different experiences to watch. The plot episodes very much require that you be up-to-date on previous episodes. The stand-alone ones, not so much. What's nice is that they tell you in the episode title whether it's plot or stand-alone.

Once you get past the fact that the Major is a Mary Sue (I heard this gets better in season 2) the show becomes much better. The rest of Section 9 is great. Some of the best episodes are the ones focusing on them. (love the episode starring the Chief)
