Export thread

So, I just finished watching Cowboy Bebop... [also, anime suggestion thread]

Soliloquy

...and now I'm horribly depressed. I mean, you start loving all of those characters, and then it ends like that?

I mean, it's a great ending, don't get me wrong. But now I need to find a way to shake the blue funk that I'm in. Any ideas?

I don't suppose the movie will help, having read that
there's evidence that it's all a hallucination Spike has while he's dying on the steps in the Red Dragon's hideout.

I feel ya, man. I went through the same thing. I'd started to watch it in high school but was afraid to finish it. Finally Jake sat me down and made me finish it, heheh.

If you get hit hard by emotional shows and books, you can just ride it out and take comfort in the fact that your feelings mean that you're not dead inside. ^_^

I also went and got ice cream. Jake bought it because it was his fault for putting me through that. :p

And here I was hoping, believing even, that it would all turn out all right. Heck, I would have been fine with bittersweet.

But at the same time, I know that there really was no better way to end it.

"bang."

The movie is just a long "episode" that takes place during the series. The series finale really is the "end" of the series.

I recommend Trigun if you haven't seen it yet for your next series.

Yeah, I was disappointed to find that out. I still wouldn't mind seeing the crew of the Bebop in action one more time, though.

Thanks for the suggestion of Trigun, by the way. I'm pretty much an anime noob, and the only other series I've seen is parts of Fullmetal Alchemist, so I'm not entirely sure which series are worth my time.

I've been trying Darker than Black lately, and have been most impressed. Hei is just awesome.

Caution: gory.

Wasn't as taken with Trigun as everyone else seems to have been, though I will admit that the series got much better as it went along.

It's just kind of deceptive in the beginning since Vash seems so silly and bumbling. It surprised me. That's all I'm gonna say. :)

Funnily enough, you aren't. Gets damned dark towards the end, though.

Another one to try is Macross Frontier. It's new-Battlestar Galactica with J-pop and transforming robots, and eight times as awesome as that sounds.

Of course, I'm fine with depressing, also. It just makes me, you know... depressed.

One thing I just noticed - both my recommendations, Darker and Frontier, had their music done by Yoko Kanno, the same lady who composed the score for Cowboy Bebop. So if you liked that...

Alternatively, if you want something that is more comedic than action packed, I'd recommend Irresponsible Captain Tyler. It's a good refresher between depressing anime series, as this one actually ends on a high note and it's OVAs keep up the tradition. I'd also reccomend the red jacket and later series of Lupin the 3rd.

I agree. Both have a great cast. Generally I'm not a stickler for English/Japanese, but if you can get Trigun with subtitles. The Japanese actor does the flip from doofy Trigun to serious Trigun really really well.

TotalFusionOne

I love Anime, but I'm such a newb. Started with Cowboy Bebop. Then got completely sidetracked with Love Hina.

LOVE FUCKING HINA

Get the series. It's amazing. Only 20 some odd episodes and a few specials but it makes me all SQUEEEEEE XD XD XD XD XD SQUEEE XD

Love Hina was my second anime ever. It has a special place in my heart. I was 18 when I started watching it, and rather gangly and geeky. I hadn't quite yet gotten to the point where I could talk to women, and the men that I had been with had been assholes to me.

When I saw Love Hina it just.. rang with me. I realized what an Otaku I really was and finally saw humor in it XD

One of my first animes was Tenchi Muyo, which is all about one dude and a shitload of girls who want to bone him. I know what you mean.

I think I'll stick with watching Trigun next. Love Hina doesn't really seem like my type of show.

wana10

which tenchi though? ova i liked the first 14, last 7 were meh. tenchi universe/tv i liked. the 3 movies i liked. tenchi tokyo was meh. tenchi gxp has almost nothing to do with tenchi and was ok.

as for a recommendation after trigun watch outlaw star. it's awesome and very similar in feel to trigun and bebop.

personally i'm on a shojo streak right now so if you want any shojo recommendations i can give those too. ;)

#25

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

Tenchi OVA followed by Tenchi TV up until Tokyo.

Tenchi Movie 1 only.

#26

wana10

what do you mean movie 1 only? the third was the best of the three...then one then two. (wana10 is a complete tenchi/ryoko shipper :D )

#27

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

Achika is the most amazing character in the entire "lore universe" of Tenchi IMO. Also, Kain is the biggest badass behind Kagato.

#28

wana10

hmmmm you're making want to rewatch the first and third movies back to back, because achika was pretty awesome v kain...and she did have some great scenes with noboyuki

#29

TotalFusionOne

I'm about to show what a newb I am. An Ova means self contained story, Right? Like not part of the "Series?"

#30

wana10

an ova means it was only released on disc or video, never had a tv run. they can be one episode or a series of episodes

edit* with tenchi it gets really confusing as their are numerous canons, each similar but slightly different from the others

#31

TotalFusionOne

Heard.

So which Tenchi should I start with? That will be after Love Hina. Also, I'll probably be watching these to fall asleep to. Are the dubbed versions wayyyyyy too horrifc?

#32

wana10

i started with the tenchi dub on toonami, it's fine. not horrific like some dubs.
coming off of love hina i'd probably start with tenchi universe. it was the tv series. then watch the first movie then the third.

#33

Shegokigo

Shegokigo

The OVA can be skipped, but I don't recommend it. It's got some SERIOUSLY nice stories in it (Kagato storyline) just remember that the Universe series is a complete restart, though it can be fun to spot the changes.

Movie 1 should be watched after Universe.

JONJONAUG

Devilman OVAs (1989, 1990) -Grade A Action/Horror

Devilman Lady - Hot lesbians turning into giant demons and beating the shit out of other giant demons. Also some of the best character development in any anime ever.

Gunbuster - Giant robots with fanservice and super-bittersweet ending

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - Very Japan-centric satire/comedy

Cutie Honey (original, New Cutie Honey, and Re: Cutie Honey, can also be spelled as "Cutey Honey") - Best transforming magical girl series out there. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUO2_helmeo]Has[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqYcv_judJY]an extremely catchy[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0rMFj_LFxY]opening song[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWsGjIuBAb8]that always stays the same[/ame]

Giant Robo - ROBOOOOO!!!! Has super kung-fu action and remote controlled robots

G Gundam - Shining fingers, more super kung-fu action

Black Lagoon - Women with big tits, guns, and crazy "I'm gonna kill this helicopter by launching a BOAT at it" action

FLCL - Six episodes of pure crazy, four of them are masterworks while two are decent

Dead Leaves - 50 minutes of pure crazy brought to you by the guy who did most of FLCL's best episode

Martian Successor Nadesico - Serious-ish show that parodies giant robot anime while still being a good giant robot anime in its own right

New Getter Robo - Holy shit this is the craziest giant robot anime ever. Three crazy dudes pilot a giant robot and beat up oni then travel back in time to feudal Japan and beat up even more giant oni in feudal Japan with their giant robot and then go fight Buddhist gods or something.

Welcome to the NHK - A guy lives alone in an apartment and talks to his kitchen appliances. Probably the best thing studio GONZO has ever produced.

Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen - Top tier giant robot anime mixed with more crazy kung-fu action and some gangsters. Best anime of 2009, not that it had much competition.

Paranoia Agent - Kind of a weird show. Gets very good as the series goes on. Strangely, the best episode (the suicide pact one) has very little to do with the rest of the series.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - The best science fiction show ever. 110 episodes long with about 50 side story episodes.

Yeah, I could recommend alot of stuff too, but overswamping a person can sometimes make them lose sight of a good "path" to follow.

After Trigun, I'll recommend a good followup.

FnordBear

FnordBear

Hmm

You did good starting with Cowboy Bebop, it sets a good bar to measure good and bad anime against. The thing to remember is anime, like American cartoons, have tons of different subject matter and themes.

Once you get a few series under your belt you might want to focus on a specific type of anime you like.

And to toss my recommendations in to the pot,

Trigun: This is the first series I watched start to finish. It does now and always will hold a special place for me. I watched it at a time in my life when I was really trying to find myself and the character of Vash really spoke to me with his ability to be a total fun-loving goofball but deadpan serious when he needed to be.

Coyote Ragtime Show: I would recommend this as a follow up to Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. It is a short, 13 episode series, about a crew of former space pirates getting together for one last big score all in the name of their former captain's daughter. Has good action, lots of heart, and ends on a high note.

Thats my two pesos.

I liked TTGL, but a lot of other super robot anime do exactly what it does and do it ten times better.

TTGL is great if you want to watch some excellent high-budget animation, but as a super robot show there are better choices (GaoGaiGar, New Getter Robo, Shin Mazinger, Mazinkaiser, etc).

Alucard

I'd second on Darker Than Black nice decent story over all.
The Full Metal Alchemist series with the movie.
Full Metal Panic and Second Raid
Eureka Seven-damn good storyline and is a whole lot damn better than Neon Genesis
Black Cat-if your up for some decent action paced anime despite some cheesy story telling.
Trinity Blood-good story even though it leaves a bit unfinished at the end
Samurai Champloo-fucking see it if you havent.
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex-awesome story
Baccano!-not a bad one either

YES. VERY YES. And Diebuster, while not as good, I think helps make the first one even better.

Also, as a movie, I'd recommend Wings of Honneamise. One of the classics.

#54

Enresshou

Enresshou

Since no one's mentioned them yet, I'd probably recommend One Piece and Bobobo Bo Bobobo.

One Piece is LONG, but it's one of those anime where you make a connection with every single character who comes along. It's funny, there are some great fights (some really wacky ones, too, which will sometimes intersperse in the 'badass' ones), and I was actually surprised by the number of touching moments in there. (Go for the subbed version, though...seriously.)

Bobobo is...well, there's really no way to say it. Think of a wackier Johnny Bravo where, instead of chasing women, he can hear the voices of hair, has made his main attack style the Hanage Shinken (Fist of the Nose-Hair), and just has crazy adventures. Really more of a goofy, 'wtf?' series, but I got a few good laughs out of it.

SpecialKO

I third Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex. Two season TV show, one follow-up movie, all awesome.

Also, if you like being depressed and feel brave, Now and Then, Here and There. Make sure you have people in your life you who love you before you start watching it, though.

Last Exile is also highly recommended, and much less depressing.

Full Metal Panic is slapstick mecha-wartime-comedy-high-school-gags at its very best.

Have a bunch more, but those are a good start.

#56

JONJONAUG

Full Metal Panic Fumoffu is slapstick mecha-wartime-comedy-high-school-gags at its very best.

Fair enough, though the first season is pretty darn high on the comedic interludes. Fumoffu really only works because of the first season antics setting the pace to play off of.

My only comment on this is that the actual stand-alone episodes and the plot episodes are different experiences to watch. The plot episodes very much require that you be up-to-date on previous episodes. The stand-alone ones, not so much. What's nice is that they tell you in the episode title whether it's plot or stand-alone.

Once you get past the fact that the Major is a Mary Sue (I heard this gets better in season 2) the show becomes much better. The rest of Section 9 is great. Some of the best episodes are the ones focusing on them. (love the episode starring the Chief)

I've been wanting to watch this for years. I keep hearing it's really awesome.

Never seen the anime, but read all the manga. Love this series.

And honestly? It's kind of fucking hopeless. Guts just doesn't give in. :p[/QUOTE]

He doesn't give in, but more than that, Guts endures. That's the thing of it - the people who act to save themselves instead of trusting in a higher power (regardless of it's source or relative goodness) have a chance to survive, all others are destroyed. Granted, it's a pretty high price for it. That's what I mean by not being hopeless. There's even hints that *incredibly minor spoiler*
Casca might get better
.

I'm a few issues behind now, though. (Last issue I read was #28) Maybe in a paycheck or two I'll get caught up.

I won't spoil it for you then, but...things take a turn for the kind of fucked up. A rather seriously fucked up turn. ;)

For Berserk, that's saying something.

It's not as viscerally fucked as
Griffith selling his soul and all of his companions (and how it went down) to the Godhand, and raping Casca just for good measure with his brand new spanking demon dong
, but on an emotional "this is how the world works" level, it's pretty out there.

I still say that Berserk is a manga version of the most badass RPG campaign ever. I mean, it kind of feels like that sometimes, doesn't it?

It's so depressing, demonic, and violent, there is surprisingly credible "evidence" that Berserk takes place on a forgotten warp-planet in Warhammer 40k, and that Guts is one of the Lost Primarchs. Tongue-in-cheek, obviously, but it actually kind of works.

Hah, they have the RPG theory too? Awesome!

I'm about 3 episodes away from the end of the first season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Man it's a good show. The dub isn't that bad either.

Not anime, but I'm also in the process of watching Samurai Sentai Shinkenger and Kamen Rider Double (W). Entertaining stuff. Not nearly as thought provoking as SAC.
