OMG YOU SPOILED PA AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT RAARRRG ARRG BLARRRG MY LIFE IS OVER MY ROUTINE IS FUCKED I WILL FIND YOUR GUTS AND SPILL THEM!

Yeah, you put a Spoiler warning in the title, but PA? That's non-specific! That could've been Police Academy! In fact, I thought it was!

DAMN YOU DAVE I WILL HUNT YOU LIKE CATTLE

Monday's page is up. And there's still vestiges of the Tiny Kitten Teeth betrayal there.

I'm sorry, but I'm still bitter about the bait-and-switch they pulled on us last time. I'm half expecting another one.

Yeah, the tiny kitten teeth one was pretty awful, honestly. It was pretty much a fan fiction of a single page of story. It had none of the substance that the first page promised.

This had better be better.

Explain this, please.

I think as first pages go, this one is particularly excellent.
The text at the bottom is too similar to the style of Tiny Kitten Teeth for me.
I think it fits the series. At least it's not papyrus.

Besides, there were people who really liked the TKT version, and it would be stupid to leave them all behind, and possibly a slap in the face of the TKT author(s).

I don't know the PA guys personally, but from what little I've seen hey are pretty stand-up guys. I don't think they'll mess this up, even if they keep some of the good pieces from the previous work.

At least they have a good sense of comic flow - we shouldn't be left staring at panels trying to figure out in what order the action and talking goes. Aside from the art and color style, the nebulous comic flow was the worst part of the previous attempt.

We shall see soon enough, though - two whole weeks of this ought to either solidify it as a fan favorite, or at least ruin it well enough that they won't attempt it again. The worst possible outcome would be if it was just lukewarm - neither great nor horrible. That would make me a sad panda. If you're going to fail, do so spectacularly - at least that's a little entertaining.

I'm curious though: Was it the TKT people who wrote the last version, along with drawing it?

Because if Tycho wrote it, I have no faith that this one will be any better. The writing was awful in the last one: it flat out refused to explore the universe any more than was already established in the meager one-page preview that Tycho and Gabe set up.

No, Tycho didn't write the last one. They had a guest-writer as well as a guest artist.

The writer is a staff writer for Heroes, too, so you would have thought both Gabe and Tycho could see suck coming ...

Yeah he even had a blog post explaining how he went with the interprtation that "May we Die in the forest" was the ultimate purpose of the Lookouts.

I didn't hate the old one, it was interesting but it definatley didn't expand well upon the promise of the original work.

Honestly, I think that the premise of Lookouts has a lot of promise in the world of graphic literature,

The idea seems strikingly relevant in a world where the common philosophy to parenting is that children should be sheltered from any possibility of harm, even at the expense of not learning valuable life skills. The world of Lookouts take a polar opposite approach, teaching children to deal with mortal danger by bringing them right into the thick of it. And the dense style of writing that Tycho tends to use for stories of this type works perfectly.

If this turns out as good as I hope it will (though my hopes may be unrealistically high) then I honestly think that Tycho and Gabe should look into making a major graphic novel project out of the idea.

I'd love to see them make a graphic novel, but I'd be more interested in seeing them make it of Automata.

You've just seemingly described 90% of anime, and, well, the monomyth.
All right, let me rephrase that: the premise focuses on an organization whose sole purpose is to teach children to deal with the many mortal dangers in the world they inhabit by bringing them right into the thick of it.

There, that better?

Yeah, I was surprised at how good automata was, when they actually wrote more than one page of it.

Automata was good, but the design really reminded me of the Big O world. I had voted for Lookouts at the time and was quite disappointed to not get Gabe & Tycho doing it. The art on that run was just confusing.

I've checked out the Tiny Kitten Teeth comic and their art style really is more suited for their work. Their comic is a comedic tale of animals in college and the pseudo-'60s art style they use (which is reminiscent of advertising looks on characters like Tony the Tiger at that time) fits the tone and feel better than the fantasy adventure of The Lookouts.

The artwork this time is a million times better, but that should be expected. I really love gabe's artwork, he has a great feel for how each panel should look.

The second to last panel in page two... where we see just the hint of a smile on the man behind the owl-mask... I don't know why, but that strikes me as a really great panel.

Me, too. The guy knows the kids worked together and distracted him so the other kids could ambush from behind. There is just SO MUCH in that little smile that it's amazing.

One of those kids is getting dead, I can feel it. I mean ... the first line of the comic sort of warns you.

All the same, no matter what happens here, I'm loving it either way.

Is it me, or has some considerable time passed between the 2nd and 3rd panels of today's comic? (5/3) If the kid on the far right of the last panel is the round-headed kid in the first two, then he has grown in the interim. The kid with the longer black hair looks more like the kid 2nd from right in the last panel.

I think you may be right. But God damn is the imagery beautiful.

Is the Winter King real or is this an extension of the game where the teacher is telling the tale?

I wish I had half the talent of these two guys.

Seems I was right in my last post. My only issue is that there is only 1 more comic to go.
