Good lord. I cannot believe she is still employed right now. That video is vile.

From CNN:
Lanny Davis joined Ari Fleischer Sunday in calling for Hearst Corporation to take quick action against legendary White House correspondent Helen Thomas for recently saying that Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine,” and that the Jewish people should go home to “Poland, Germany … and America and everywhere else.”

Thomas was also dropped by her agent Nine Speakers, Inc. Sunday, CNN has learned, and Craig Crawford, who coauthored “Listen Up, Mr. President” with Thomas, said in a blog post that he “will no longer be working with Helen on our book projects.”

Thomas has apologized for her comments that she made to Rabbilive.com about Israel.

Specifically, she was asked, “Any comments on Israel?”

“Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine,” she responded.

The interviewer then asked “Any better comments on Israel?” To which Thomas said, “Remember, these people are occupied and it’s their land. It’s not German’s. It’s not Poland’s.”

Thomas was then asked where the Jews in Israel should go and what they should do? Thomas responded, “They should go home” which the White House reporter identified as “Poland, Germany . . . and America and everywhere else.”

Previously Fleischer, who served as press secretary for former President George W. Bush, said Thomas should be fired because of her remarks. And in a statement provided to CNN Sunday he reiterated that demand.

“Helen's statement calling for the religious cleansing of Israel is reprehensible,” Fleischer said. “If this isn't bigotry, what is? What she said is as bad as someone saying all blacks should leave America and go back to Africa.

“Hearst Newspapers should do the right thing and let Helen go,” Fleischer added in the statement.

Update, 8:33 p.m.: The Anti-Defamation League has provided CNN with a written statement regarding Thomas' remark and apology. "Helen Thomas’s statement of regret does not go far enough. Her remarks were outrageous, offensive and inappropriate," ADL national director Abraham H. Foxman said in the statement. Foxman added, "Her suggestion that Israelis should go back to Poland and Germany is bigoted and shows a profound ignorance of history. We believe Thomas needs to make a more forceful and sincere apology for the pain her remarks have caused."

i mean, ok, if shes healthy then yeah, i agree but this seems like the kind of crazy out of character thing that senility might cause. Time will tell.

She's a fucking legend in the press corps. Now? This will be what she's remembered for - a dumbass statement.

I do agree with the start of her statement about getting out of Palestinian Territories...and by that I don't mean the entire region but the Gaza Strip. But I think she means the entire damned region including giving up the state of Israel, which is just a ludicrous statement.

Sound like old people bigotry to me. Except it's not just embarrassing to her family during Thanksgiving.

Seriously. What's she going to do with all her free time now? Drool into a cup and moan her constant incontinence?

I think I'm staying out of this one. I get the feeling my thoughts on Israel won't be very popular. All I'll say is the creation of Israel was one of the biggest blunders of the 21st century.

Or, as Dave calls it, "Saturday night."[/QUOTE]

Friday night. On Saturdays I sit on the lawn with a shotgun and terrorize the neighbor kids.

Sundays I call random numbers in the phone book and ask them if they have seen my teeth.

What a disappointing end to an incredible career. I guess she really did have an "old person" moment, because it seems so at odds with the careful, considered questions she's known for.

Good on her for resigning, though.

Wait...what century?

But yeah, it was a bad idea. I don't think it was any worse than every other thing the powers that be did to the middle east over the last 200 years, but it was one in a number of very bad choices. "Hey let's just draw borders on this map and not pay attention to racial or religious differences. They may not like it, but what's the worst that can happen?" Great job Europe. Africa and the Middle East thanks you.

Clearly the entire situation would be fixed by transposing people, that worked in the first place.

Even if it WAS a blunder, saying that they should leave NOW is incredibly unsympathetic... Most Jews in Israel where now BORN there. Doesn't matter the circumstances that brought their families there, they were born and raised there. It's their home, it's their country.

Like someone was quoted saying.. it's akin to saying black people should leave America NOW because their forefathers were brought from Africa. They don't give a shit, they're American, this is their home, this is where they belong.

I get what you are saying bout the it's their home now. But I gotta say the black people thing doesn't really jive if anythings its more messed up because our forefathers brought them over here against their will. The people over there weren't moved in because the Palestine people wanted them there. (Although neither scenario is good).

No, they were moved there because other countries said, "Good, now we have a place to put our Jews." Much of it was not their free will either.

THEIR ANCESTORS

I mean, I know there's probably still old people around who were there for the whole thing and remember being moved there.. but the majority are now the younger generation that were BORN THERE, to them telling them they need to leave is akin to someone telling you to leave because your dad was Irish or whatever.

Ya but it still different than the case of America where blacks were brought over to do work for them.
*Edit: Also I think we have even less of a reason to bitch because they were forcefully brought over because people here wanted them.

It's still a workable analogy.

It really is. Maybe with a bit longer of a timeline, but that still doesn't matter... if you were born and raised somewhere it's your home, it doesn't matter if your family has been there for 42 generations or you're the first.
