Ok So i am thinking of dying my hair black. Right now it is a really dark brown. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with black dye. What should I look for in a boxed dye? etc.

also im not going for a goth/emo thing i just wanted to try out a darker hair color. Ive never dyed my hair before so Im nervous.

Black might not be a good choice. It's a pretty harsh color. You may want to look for a color that's a shade or two darker than your hair right now. There are a few types of dye: semi-permanent (lasts for about a week or two, gradually washes out), demi-permanent (lasts about a month, also gradually washes out), and permanent (this is the one that has to grow out). Semi and demi-permanent colors are good for trying out a new color, but it will not make a dramatic change in your hair color. You'd need permanent hair color for that.

I like Clairol or Garnier.

I've found it difficult to find anything but permanent colour in the boxed stuff. But I do prefer the demi-permanent, if I can find it. I have also attempted to dye my hair black at home, and for whatever reason, it did not take at all. Unfortunately, I totally forget what brand it was, but I seem to recall that I had used that brand before w/a different colour with no issues, so who knows.

Good luck, hae fun, and remember that it can always be changed back.

Can't recall if I've ever seen a picture of you. If you have a very fair complexion, however, I'd advise against it. A friend of mine in junior high dyed his brown hair sharp black, and he was pretty pale to begin with.

Poor guy looked like a corpse worm dipped in crude oil.

I don't know brands too well as far as hair dye. I have naturally strawberry blonde hair so I don't like the idea of changing it. I've only ever dyed it once, to be Wolverine for Fan Expo, and what I can tell you is that semi and demi-permanent dyes don't work well if you're light coloured going dark. Instead of turning dark brown, my hair turned vibrant red and I wound up using a spray on water based black instead.

One thing I do know is to do your research, because many "black" dyes are actually very dark blues or purples, and it can be pretty noticeable.

My wife dye my hair all the time. My hair has a pepper look since I have been getting grays at age 18. We just use whatever dye is cheap ;) Black hair is easy to do. I remember doing some blue highlight but that was a bit tricky with black Asian hair.

Wrong. Fair skin + dark/black hair = cute.

I know nothing about hair dye except that I once dyed my hair red, and I liked it but everyone I know hated it and shamed me into never dying it again.

I just want black hair. I dont know what kind.

I am pretty fair skinned but my hair is naturally pretty dark so I think it should be ok.

Well, I used to try and dye the grey out of my hair when I was in middle school, but the dye gave me headaches so I stopped after a couple months.

sigh i made the other hair change i wanted to make, cutting bangs, and now between the freckles and the bangs I really look eight years old.

le merde.

I would say "Oh, you'll like that you look young when you're older" but one of my closest friends wants to murder everyone who says that to her and I will assume the same of you, and like many others I fear death.

I dont mind looking young, I can't see any value to looking like a grade schooler though....

I'm sure you have enough boobs for the both of you.
Well, it's not like I'm going give some of them to her or something. That'd be mammary redistribution, which is socialist and wrong.
Oh, of course not. I figure you two are equal since this is a quality vs. quantity issue.

By default, she would be quality, you know.
