not so serious but I want to rant II: Redemption

I hear Amun squeaking upset, and I want to help him, I really do. But we're supposed let the rats tussle and establish who's dominant, so long as they don't draw blood, or else they'll be violent with each other when they're older. So much as we don't like it, we have to sit and let Amun cry out as Nyxie pushes him down.

He's knocked Nyxie down a peg before; I'd kind of rather he became dominant just because Nyxie's more of an asshole, but really, that's why Nyxie's going to be the dominant one in the end.

JUST LIKE HUMANS.

Second release in a row that the server doesn't start again afterwards... I'm going to buy some beer and if it's not up by the time I get back I'm taking a bat to it.

SSU is a traditionally black university, which I have no problem with. I have zero issues with the venue of the parade itself, although the motorcycle clubs were perhaps a touch too exuberant on the revving for my tastes, to say nothing of the salaciousness of some of the dance lines (Apparently I have become part of the older generation when my back was turned, because I don't get these kids with their crazy butt-wiggling, sex-emphasizing dance moves)

No, what I have an issue with is the extra-ghetto individuals who deign to depart from their Projects-lairs to congregate on MLK Blvd, get drunk, smoke some bud within 20 feet of 3 police officers, and say things in that "stage-undertone" that's obviously directed at someone else, like: "Well, we be seein' thems out there, but there's polices in da way. I don' know why they always gotta be in front of a nigga like that."

Uneducated, ignorant, self-aggrandizing, stupid, inflated ego-having USELESS leeches. Who, unfortunately, always seem to gather in MASSIVE quantities to this event and the MLK Day parade. Way to represent yourselves. And wonder why some folks might AUTOMATICALLY assume the worst of a black person, if that's the example that you set forth to society.

I am not a racist person - I can't afford to be, for one, to say nothing of person moral and ethical values. But when people of a particular socioeconomic strata consistently put forth such a showing in these types of situations... it's easy to see how someone COULD be a racist. Which is more than a little bit unsettling.

I think THAT'S what I have the issue with, really. That these dregs are making me contemplate a dark place inside. (/emodrama)

"That these dregs are making me contemplate a dark place inside."

precursor to a massacre.

They haven't in Ontario until very recently, at least where I lived. Upon my move to BC and finding out that all of their stores have it I was pretty pissed actually. It's not that I go often, rarely really, but I hardly, if ever, have cash on me and the only place that would stay open late back home was timmys, usually at this time I'd be walking back from a friend's place.

Even when I've gone back to visit most recently as this summer they didn't have debit at store closest to my Dad's. Credit cards and the little debit pin pad, but they don't actually accept debit. May have changed now though, not sure.
Do debit cards work differently in canada? My debit card can be run thru as a credit transaction without any problem. Any place that accepts visa credit thus accepts my debit.
Tim hortans is literally the only place I have ever run into this situation, that they accept credit and not debit, so I really have no idea.
Yeah, I've never seen anywhere else that takes Credit and not Debit. Its bizarre. They also don't accept Visa and I find that very odd. They only take Mastercard.

I have managed to not spend all my money at Tim Hortons despite their new debit policy though. I bought myself a sweet coffee mug that is also a French press so I can make my coffee and drink it from the same convenient container. This will save me so much money in the long run.

Since when didn't they?
In Ontario, since . I have no idea why. In fact I recall being amazed when I went to Saskatchewan where they do have debit.

I'd really like to leave early from Family Law so I could go with my other Prof to protest the GHF morons. But since I'm on the Family Law prof's shit list I am afraid to ask. I may also have to recite that day and since he is pissed at me I don't see him making it easy.

sigh.

I find it disturbing that people really think a supreme being, which could create the universe, cares if people of the same sex touches another person's penis or vagina.

You know, I don't agree with them, but I don't find it disturbing at all to think that a creator is interested in the lives of their creations. I find it rather awesome actually. Of course, as the Westboro folks show us so well, the things said creator might care about are... open to debate.:p

Thank you for calling them the "Westboro folks", since nothing they have done or exhibited says Baptist or church. I personally think we should just call them the Phelps Cult.

Every Baptist I know is pissed that they're using "Baptist" in their name. Don't blame them. There's this big division here of happy, sing songs and have pot-lucks Baptists and not-so-secretly miserable, fire and Brimstone baptists. Almost none of them are as crazy as the Westboro cult (yep, much better ring).

Just so we're clear, not kidding.

Well, even da Pope denied that condoms helped prevent the spread of aids.
Insert obligatory joke about a celibate man telling close to a billion people what to do with their dicks and vagoos.
You know he said just today that condoms can be used in exceptional circumstances, referring to illnesses, even if he then proceded to compare non reproductive sex to drug addictions?

Well, it's been walked back from what he said, which was that in cases of male prostitution it could be used to prevent the spread of disease. Now, however, the Vatican is saying their position on condoms hasn't changed, which at last comment was a year ago when Benedict said that condoms made the spread of the Aids virus more likely, not less.

I'll be honest, I've never really understood how the popes views on condoms have affected the aids epidemic. If the pope is suddenly like, Hey, condoms are cool, will all the people with aids in Africa suddenly start wearing them? I mean, if they are all having sex outside of marriage already then they aren't exactly devout catholics. The only thing I can think of is maybe there are aid agencies who can't distribute them because of this?

I think this might be the issue that gets affected.

Because he has a heavy influence in poverty stricken nations, especially in Africa. To say that Africans aren't 'entire devout Catholics' isn't a fair assessment. The only break-away is being caused by priests who wish to marry, since in African nations having a family is important by their social norms.

From Wikipedia on Roman Catholicism in Africa said:
In 2005, the Roman and Eastern Catholic Churches of Africa embraced approximately 135,600,000 members of the 809,105,000 residents in Africa. In 2009, when Pope Benedict XVI visited Africa, it was estimated at 158 million. By 2025, one-sixth (230 million) of the world's Catholics are expected to be African.

Blech. The cold I thought I beat yesterday came back. Big time. Now my nose is runny again and I'm stuffed up. Top it all off with a small sty and only 6 hours of sleep, and I reach an annoying trifecta of suffering.

I'm not denying there aren't "devout" catholics in Africa and other places but as sex outside of marriage (not to mention rape which seems to be a rather serious problem in some places) is a pretty high on the list of no-no's in the catholic church and that doesn't seem to be something folks are following so I guess I don't really expect the pope saying "condoms are cool" to really make a big difference for those who already ignore him.

I have a hard time with that one. There is a lot of sex outside of marriage by Catholics here in the U.S. as well. People will always pick and choose which tenets they will follow, so I have a hard time saying someone isn't devout for not following one or two rules. Especially when it is being judged by people outside of that particular society.

As was said in Dogma "Eating meat on Friday used to be a hell worthy sin..."

Drop the whole "devout" thing then, we don't have to be hung up on that word. There are plenty of devout catholics, here, there everywhere, everyone is devout if they say they are. I got no problems with that. Nor would I disagree that there are clearly people for whom the Popes' opinion has serious sway. It doesn't change the fact that people in many of the countries that are in the middle of serious aids epidemics are already, as you mention, doing whatever they want regarding church tenants, so again, I really doubt the pope waving condoms around is going to make a huge difference to or the prostitutes, both male and female, with aids or the guy with aids sleeping with different girls (or raping them) every week in Sudan.

In fact from listening to aid workers discussing the issue on NPR a bit ago it sounds like it's near impossible to get men to even take condoms from those offering them to them, because they just don't care. One of my friends who lives and works in Sudan described it as a "fundamental value of life" issue. The value of life just isn't there for many. Finding ways to change that might, in my opinion, make a real difference. Thats an even bigger problem though, considering some of the horrible stuff that is going on over there and how much of the world exploits Africa. It's not going to be easily solved.

So should the pope change his stance on birth control? It doesn't really make a huge difference to me, I'm not catholic, but I think it would be a decent step forward in promoting safer behavior. I think those who think* it will suddenly change everything are being seriously naive though (*thats a generic "those who think", I doubt anyone here really thinks that, but I sure do know folks who do...).
