Some times I have trouble distinguishing between which movies are good and which are entertaining. I think the latter is more important to me overall.

Shawshank Redemption
Hot Fuzz
The Matrix
Equililbrium
Batman Begins
The Incredibles
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
The Lord of the Rings
Tombstone
Big Trouble in Little China
Love, Actually
Shaun of the Dead
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail

Wings of Desire
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Aguirre, Wrath of God
Ashes of Time
Hard Boiled
Naked
Unforgiven
The Incredibles
Aliens
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings

A few notes:
-I have to say even I'm a little surprised to have 2 Clint Eastwood films on there ("Unforgiven" and "Outlaw Josey Wales").
-Some of these films are sort of representative of certain "periods" i have gone through over the years: "Wings of Desire" and "Aguirre" represent German films of the 70's/80's, which I saw in college, "Ashes of Time" and "Hardboiled" represent my Hong Kong "phase" in the 90's.
-"The Incredibles" is on there because it is a film I can watch over and over again, which is not normal for me. I found this out when i was doing holiday work at a Suncoast Video and the ad-loop was broken so we have to put DVD's on instead. I got sick to death of any number of Disney and Dreamworks films, but I never got tired of the Incredibles.

OK, a list ripped quickly off the top of my head. Only one that I describe as a guilty pleasure. In no particular order:

Good Will Hunting
Princess Bride
Shawshank Redemption
Fight Club
Crazy Heart
The Postman
The Bourne Ultimatum

Possibly on the list but I need to watch again. Consider them on the list for now:
Inception
The Brothers Bloom
The Hurt Locker

A lot of these, I realize after listing them, are movies that just resonated with me. There was something in them that I simply identified with or felt connected to. I realize some of them are seriously flawed but I find those don't trouble me or are even something that paradoxically enhances the film in some way. Tough to explain, I guess.

Okay, here's a list of movies that if I find them on I will not turn it.

Shawshank Redemption
Amadeus
Raising Arizona
Better Off Dead
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Fight Club (I know, I know...)
A Clockwork Orange
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python and the Meaning of Life
The Life of Brian
Band of Brothers

There are others which are my favorites but I can't watch them very often - Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, etc.
Solid list, a little redundant to put three python movies, and Band of Brothers is a mini-series. 7/10

Consistent, yet slightly lame list. 6/10

Wings of Desire
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Aguirre, Wrath of God
Ashes of Time
Hard Boiled
Naked
Unforgiven
The Incredibles
Aliens
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings

.
I have not seen half of these movies :( but what I have seen, I really liked. 9/10

Random missive. The only Pixar movie on everyone's list is The Incredibles. I like the movie, but if you're putting a Pixar movie on there, I'd go with Wall-E every day of the week and twice on Sunday. What's y'alls deal? Is it the whole superhero love thing?

These are all insanely great movies with the exception of The Postman(hahaha WHAT. I want to hope this is some random obscure indie or older silent movie and not the Kevin Costner piece of shit, but I think I'm wrong.) 9/10

I can't speak for everyone, but as for me, while Wall-E is a better movie, The Incredibles is more rewatchable and fun for me. I think Up is also a better movie, but again if both are on I'd rather watch The Incredibles again.

I was greatly dissatisfied with Wall-E's second half after a fantastic first half, while the Incredibles averages out across its length better, IMHO. I also find the writing in the Incredibles really wonderfully well done, only beaten by Up among the Pixar crowd.

No, you're right. It is the POS Postman that everyone hates. I don't know why but it is like comfort food for me. I KNOW it is a lousy movie intellectually but I dig it every time. *shrug* Also, I might have to add Wall-E to the list, now that you mention it.

This I understand.

My "comfort food" list (not necessarily all "lousy", but definitely more on the kitschy side of the scale):

Predator
Aliens
Big Trouble in Little China
Brotherhood of the Wolf
District B13
Flash Point
Blade 2
Desperado
the Warriors
Dog Soldiers
Deep Rising
Zombieland
Sin City
Dawn of the Dead remake

I swear I missed where "most rewatchable" became a synonym for best. But yeah, this sure is a list of trashy movies. 4/10
Some movies are great as such that you need to see them once. Other movies are enjoyable upon multiple viewings. As for me, I'd rather spend money purchasing a movie that I'd rather watch over and over again than buy a movie that's great to see once. As such, my favorite movies are the ones I like to see repeatedly.

I will rank your favorite movies lists
:smug:
I probably should have said top/best in the thread title! I messed up admittedly and assumed favorite/best were the same thing for everyone else because they are for me for the most part.
Oh no, I figured that's what you meant (hence my first list), but I can't honestly claim that any of my "guilty pleasure" movies are anything but that. That doesn't lessen my enjoyment of them.

Favorite doesn't mean high-ranking or impressive; it has to do with pleasure and lovability.

After having a day to think about it, I should've scrapped Hellboy in favor of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and then throw in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Pulp Fiction, and Coraline.

Wings of Desire
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Aguirre, Wrath of God
Ashes of Time
Hard Boiled
Naked
Unforgiven
The Incredibles
Aliens
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings

.
I have not seen half of these movies :( but what I have seen, I really liked. 9/10
Some of those are the benefit of a film degree and some of them the benefit of working as a projectionist (I got to see Unforgiven alot).

Speaking solely for myself I think it was partly a matter of it's timing. Up until the Incredibles came out, Pixar was in a bit of a rut, while they were clearly very skilled and very creative film-makers, they had really started making the same film over and over again. If felt like they hit a nadir with Cars, which was actually a pretty lousy film. The Incredibles was a breath of fresh air and I can't help but think that it reinvigorated Pixar as both Wall-E and Up were both very good films. But for me The Incredibles still stands out better than any of them.

i almost feel ashamed i forgot the shawshank redemption in my list.

I disagree on your view of Taken, Charlie. Strongly. But to each his own i guess.

i kinda agree Road Warrior may be overrated but i loved that movie as a teenager and it sticked.

Probably not gonna be very high, but whatever. This is in order.

Airplane!
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Iron Man
Toy Story 3
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Spaceballs
History of the World Pt. 1 (I really should see blazing saddles btw)
Schindler's list
Anchorman
Stepbrothers
Serenity

Sure why not:

Pan's Labrynth
Forrest Gump
Silence of the Lambs
Apocolypse Now
Johnny Get Your Gun
Se7en
Chocolate (Japanese Film)
Pulp Fiction
Clockwork Orange
Amadeus
Old Boy

Hm.... been a while since I made a list -
Romero's Living Dead series. Including Land and Diary (Count it as one if you like)
Hostel 1
Saw 1
But I'm A Cheerleader
Nightmare On Elm Street (Series)
Friday the 13th (Series)
The Mist
Rec (Brazilian Version)
Silence of the Lambs
Last Supper (Japanese Horror Film)
Ju-On 1
Hellraiser 1
28 Days/Weeks
Kill Bill 1-2
Evil Dead (Series)

Really had to narrow it down to these, my list is pretty large on the whole....

I can't remember if The Thing is on my list but it should be. Damn what a movie.
The Thing is just fantastic. I'm cautiously optimistic about the prequel.

Terminator 2
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

There is a lot to hate about Die Hard 3 actually. It's just a standard action movie, not a "Die Hard" movie. It's not so bad though, to be honest. Still a solid list 7/10

Pan's Labrynth
Forrest Gump
Silence of the Lambs
Apocolypse Now
Johnny Get Your Gun
Se7en
Chocolate (Japanese Film)
Pulp Fiction
Clockwork Orange
Amadeus
Old Boy
Good list. I thought I might be the only other person that liked/saw Chocolate (kung fu version). 8/10

Whole series is a huge cop out! Especially Nightmare/Friday/Romero. I love those movies and have probably seen each one of each 5+ times. Each series is also wildly different as it goes on. What are your favorites from each? I have to respect a pretty genre-focused list. But I also have to knock points off for Hostel/Saw since I thought they were slightly lame. 7/10.

Sidebar: I can't remember if I gushed at you about The House of the Devil yet, or if you watched it on netflix instant yet. It's so fucking good.

I hate coming up with a favorite movie list. I can never decide what to put on there.

Here's the best I could do:

Dark City
Aliens
Heat
Dawn of the Dead
The Dark Knight
Back to the Future
Empire Strikes Back
Fellowship of the Ring
Matrix
Tron
Ghostbusters
Terminator 2
The Big Lebowski
Jurassic Park
Shaun of the Dead
Serenity

It's not the most original list ever, that's for sure.
