I will rank your favorite movies lists on a scale of 1-10

Charlie Don't Surf

The Lovely Boehner

Post your list of top movies of all-time. You should have at least 5, no more than 20. They don't have to be in order of favoriteness, but I would appreciate that. I will give it a ranking from 1-10 on whether I think it's a good list. If you get a 1, that means you have bad taste and/or should probably watch more movies. If you get a 10, then you have a good list of awesome movies. I also might be so moved by lists as to give out reputation. I'm bored.

Let's validate Charlie's opinion and weak self-image!

In no order except that the first two are most definitely on top.

The Fountain
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Jaws
The Prestige
Princess Mononoke
Casablanca
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
The Incredibles
The Dark Crystal
Hellboy

At least spice it up some if you're gonna do a silly list. Throw in some obscure shit he's likely never seen, like Colma: The Musical, or stuff that's critically acclaimed like Citizen Kane. Mess with his head.

My list is pretty much perfect.

1.) Chinatown
2.) Chinatown
3.) Chinatown
4.) Chinatown
5.) Chinatown
6.) Chinatown
7.) Chinatown
8.) Chinatown
9.) Chinatown
10.) The Neverending Story

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Blade Runner

The Princess Bride
Howl's Moving Castle

It's almost perfect. Honestly if it had a Luck Dragon in it I wouldn't even have to put The Neverending Story in there.

So then Charlie should make a thread of his list, and put up a poll where we get to rank it 1-10.

Not in the exact order.

Seven samurai
The royal tenenbaums
Stranger than fiction
Annie Hall
Casablanca
Night of the living dead
7/10. Stranger Than Fiction kind of seems out of place. I did like it a whole lot, though.

Manos: the Hands of Fate
Plan 9 from Outer Space
Howard the Duck
Stop! Or my Mom Will Shoot!
Showgirls
5/10 for being consistently bizarre, yet varied. Only movie I've seen on this list is Showgirls, though.

Let's validate Charlie's opinion and weak self-image!

In no order except that the first two are most definitely on top.

The Fountain
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Jaws
The Prestige
Princess Mononoke
Casablanca
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
The Incredibles
The Dark Crystal
Hellboy

Hellboy? Really? I didn't really like either of those movies. The Dark Crystal is also kind of odd. 6/10

My list is pretty much perfect.

1.) Chinatown
2.) Chinatown
3.) Chinatown
4.) Chinatown
5.) Chinatown
6.) Chinatown
7.) Chinatown
8.) Chinatown
9.) Chinatown
10.) The Neverending Story
I love Chinatown. 9/10

Ok, how about a real list then

Star Wars Trilogy (original, non-special edition only)
Schindler's List
Shawshank Redemption
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Office Space
Blade Runner
Dark City
The Matrix
Spaceballs
The Princess Bride
Howl's Moving Castle
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Big Lebowski
Stranger than Fiction
Do I need to watch Stranger Than Fiction again? Kind of a safe-ish, standard mid-20s nerd list. That's not bad per se, but just, seems like I could guess at this list for half the people on the internet. 5/10

And I think I've posted my Criticker and top rankings on a few occasions.

The Godfather (1972)
The Godfather: Part II (1974)
Network (1976)
12 Angry Men (1957)
Annie Hall (1977)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's … (1975)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Die Hard (1988)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I L… (1964)
Goodfellas (1990)

Okay, but you are not allowed to rank the movie if you haven't seen it:

Shawshank Redemption
Pan's Labyrinth
Incredibles
Iron Giant
Killer Klowns From Outer Space

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Gremlins

Also, this is already starting to feel like another "Charlie wants to shit on your favourite movie" thread.

A real list, without to much though put into it would probably go more along the lines of (in no particular order):

Chinatown
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Rocky
First Blood
The Neverending Story (Although I'm aware my nostalgia factor stops me from truly judging the film on it's own merits, but it is what it is...)
The Dark Knight
Taxi Driver
The Godfather Part II
Alien
Psycho
Rebecca

It's really lame and weird to think old movies are on some weird different plane. They're still movies! They are very different, granted, but a movie from 1943 compared to a movie from 2010 isn't much different than comparing Hot Tub Time Machine to No Country for Old Men.

Yeah, I'm questioning this too, considering Charlie's mentioned people can like bad movies as long as they admit they're bad or some stupid crap, and I'd think he'd have one or two in there that he liked regardless of the RottenTomatoes score. 7th Voyage of Sinbad on my list--I will never defend that as a good movie, but I love it dearly.

It definitely holds up. Somehow it escaped my lmind when I jotted down my own list.

#30

Wyrminarrd

I could have added movies 11 and twelve to my list since you allowed for there to be up to 20 movies, I just feel strongly that the Lord of the Rings movies are really just one movie cut into three parts due to length issues but if you want them in order then it's "Return of the King", "Two Towers" and "Fellowship of the ring" :)

Other than that I agree that lumping trilogies or series together is a lame way around running out of space on a list.

http://www.criticker.com/resource/8054/rankings.txt here's my full rankings thing, every movie I've ever seen. It's not perfect, I'm semi-in-the-middle of reranking a lot of the middle with a lot of stuff I overrated. Pretty much anything from 90-100 is interchangeable. All the ones ranked 90 I just put there in the "top tier" and haven't gone through and ranked it among the top 10%/great of all time movies.

And this is why you don't have a right to judge things that others enjoy. Manchild-y? Iron Giant and Incredibles aren't amazing movies? Or do you mean Gremlins, the movie that I never get tired of watching and grew up on, and now have a very fond memory of watching it with my niece just this past Christmas for the first time. Let me tell you why What Dreams May Come is one of my favourite movies, though:

Because of my ongoing battle with depression, thoughts of suicide are constantly, constantly on my mind. And every year, I watch this to remind myself (being a semi-religious person) that there might just be something beautiful beyond death. And if I desecrate that by killing myself, I could wind up in a world much like Anna. So yeah, fuck you and whatever your opinion is of What Dreams May Come. I watch and love it because it's a combination of the exploration of afterlife beliefs and my own battle with my self-esteem. It has nothing to do with whether it's a "good" movie or not.

So, fuck you and your judgemental bullshit.

Garden State
Gone in 60 seconds
Jurassic Park

The Last Samurai
Princess Bride
Robin Hood men in tights

Oh and Batmanuel that list deserves a 10/10

#37

The Incredibles is an awesome movie. I haven't seen Iron Giant since I was little. I was referring to killer klowns, trick r treat, and gremlins mostly.

#38

ThatNickGuy

ThatNickGuy

Right, and you said "favourite," not "what do you think are the best movies?" Do you honestly think I believe Killer Klowns is a great or even good movie? Good lord, no.

And have you seen Trick 'r Treat? It's one of the best damn horror flicks I've seen in years. It doesn't take itself seriously and feels like Creepshow, in the series of short stories.

Right, you want a list of movies I think are the best? Here:

Shawshank Redemption
Pan's Labyrinth
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Incredibles
The Iron Gian
As Good as it Gets
Good Will Hunting
Seven Samurai
Road to Perdition
The Matrix

Not that it matters, right? I could list, say, Schiendler's List - which is an amazing movie - but I wouldn't want to watch it all the time. In fact, watching it once is good enough for me, not just because of its length but how heart-wrenching it was. But, you said "favourite," which is so goddamn different from what's "good" that ranking (in other words, judging) someoene's movies is ridiculous. There is personal tastes, personal history, opinion, all sorts of factors that play into why a movie is someone's "favourite," which is why this entire thread is poointless.

In no particular order:

1. Lord of the Rings trilogy
2. Star Wars original trilogy
3. Casablanca
4. Schindler's List
5. Pianist
6. Amélie
7. Hot Fuzz
8. Shaun of the Dead
9. All Monty Python movies (esp. Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and The Meaning of Life)
10. Iron Man
11. Gone With the Wind
12. The Great Dictator
13. Several Disney animated films, including Princess and the Frog, Lion King, Aladdin and Hercules.
14. One Bridge Too Far
15. The Great Escape
16. The Magnificent Seven
17. Pirates of the Caribbean, the film as well as the trilogy
18. The first three Indiana Jones movies. The fourth one is good, but not among the best.
19. Porco Rosso
20. Kill Bill, vol. 1

Honourable mentions go to Princess Bride, Blues Brothers, Willow, 300, Tuntematon sotilas ('The Unknown Soldier'), Arn movies, Uuno Turhapuro comedies, Jurassic Park, History of the World Part 1 and other movies that didn't make the cut.

I really avoided that since I didn't mean to offend you at all. I think a lot of miscommunication kind of came because my favorite movies are usually best. I don't count "rewatchability" as my favorite at all. I like good movies that challenge me and take an emotional toll on me more than something I can put on in the background. The movies I've seen the most times would probably be a dead heat between Norm McDonald classic "Dirty Work" and "Talledega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby". Sometimes these things intersect though! I think Ghostbusters and Die Hard would probably crack my top 10, but they are also great movies.

Lawlz, that's not the point. If I included all of my favorite older movies, my list would be like fifty films long. I had trouble paring it down to twenty-some as it was.

But okay if I must, I'm-a go ahead and complete that shit with:

I fucking ADORE all of the Marx Brothers films from The Cocoanuts (1929) through to A Night In Casablanca (1946) with the notable exception of Room Service (1938) which was NOT written for the brothers and frankly is, aside from a few gags delivered by Harpo, painful to watch. Of course, some films are better than others. The more prominent the love interests, the more bogged down their films tended to be. If only the audiences of the time could have been trusted just to laugh.
The Treasure of the Sierre Madre (Bogey's greatest, in my humble opinion)
Harvey ('You've also got the screwiest uncle who ever stuck his puss in the nut house!')
Some Like It Hot ('I'd like to BORROW a cup of that sugar!' BEST AND MOST CLASSY SEX COMEDY EVER, PERIOD)
The Odd Couple ('It's twelve floors, not eleven!')
The Great Escape
Sting
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Thin Man
After the Thin Man (Brilliant villain ;D)
Another Thin Man ('He smells like a dog - he smells like Asta!')
The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (This film has a guy named Kockenlocker - I kid you not)
Libeled Lady
Arsenic and Old Lace ('You'll like the bodies in my attic! NONE of them are gentlemen!')
The Lemon Drop Kid
Road To Morocco
Road To Utopia
Road To Rio

Charade ('Which view would you prefer?' 'The one you're blocking!')
The Man Who Came To Dinner (I watch this every Christmas. It drives most people I know nuts but I happen to consider it one of the most hilarious films ever based on a play).
Gunga Din (yeah it's a racist old film, but Grant turns in one of his goofiest roles aside from maybe Mortimer Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace)
The Philadelphia Story
Pat and Mike
('Why don't 'e examine me?!')
Bringing Up Baby ('I can't give you anything but LOVE ... baby; dream a while, scheme a while', etc.)
Cool Hand Luke
Nothing Sacred
('I will remove you from the LAND of the LIVING!')
Seven Samurai
The Hidden Fortress
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer
('I know a man ...')
My Favorite Blonde
My Favorite Brunette
(God I love this film ... I wish there was a decent print of it still around. Regardless, Hope does his thing and he does it well. Peter Lorre lends his usual awesomeness)
Casablanca
The Lost World
(1924) (I'm a big fan of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story - read it four times - and I bought the silent film on DVD for cheap years ago. Absolutely love it!)
The Gold Rush
The Great Dictator
Modern Times
City Lights
(that boxing scene is one of the most hilarious fucking things to ever be committed to film)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Rear Window
The Magnificent Seven
His Girl Friday
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
(I don't care how cheesy it was, that movie is a goddamn gem)
It's A Wonderful Life (this one used to bug me a little, but I've grown to appreciate it over the years, especially since it features one of my two favorite actors of Golden Age Hollywood - the other one being Grant)
The Paleface ('Gimme some water ... in a dirty glass!)
Adam's Rib

Mind, I've seen most of these movies literally dozens of times. I had the greatest big sister of all time growing up. Well, still do, lol. She rented boatloads of old movies from the local library 'cause our parents were all uptight and shit, and old movies (what with the Hays Code and all) were great in our house, so we watched some really cool shit. Nowadays when I hear someone talk trash about old movies, I want to hang myself by the shoelaces until dead.

That's different for two reasons: one, I'm not actively bashing any comic that someone enjoys. I didn't say The Maxx, for example, was a bad comic. It was just too weird for me. I know a lot of people enjoy the hell out of it and I'm not going to go out of my way to bash it or them for it. That's a totally different ball of wax than what Charlie does on a regular and frequent basis. And second, that post was created as part satire.

Getting offended over it isn't going to do any good and really, it's just not that big of a deal if one guy doesn't like someones movie choices. I don't wanna see anymore attacks in here.

No shit right? Drop it guys. Seriously.

As to watching only like Fargo the one time? Sure, different strokes for different folks and all that. Theres some really odd movies I can watch over and over with very little rhyme or reason. Some of them are just... SO bad. I've watched "Jeepers Creepers" like a hundred times. It sucks but it has brief moments of brilliance that I just love.

All right, I'll get in on this awesome judging action.

1) Cool Hand Luke - This is my favorite movie, with my favorite actor. I could include lots of other Newman movies, but I think I'll just list this one.
2) Fargo
3) The Empire Strikes Back - Yeah, I know, common nerd pick, but it was a big part of my life
4) Short Circuit 1 & 2 - To be honest, I think 1 was a better movie, but I enjoyed 2 more.
5) The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
6) The Big Lebowski
7) Pulp Fiction
8) No Country For Old Men - This is starting to get a little Cohen heavy
9) One Hour Photo - Why? Fuck you. (ooo, ooo, oooo)
10) Little Miss Sunshine

Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars

Apocalypse Now

Wrath of Khan

Monkey Business
Blazing Saddles
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
The Adventures of Robin Hood - Still the best Robin Hood movie, by far.
Raising Arizona
The Life of Brian

The Searchers

My TV thing is pretty absurd and even I don't believe it, that was just pure trolling, I apologize. I am not a huge British TV fan/guy. I mean, what I've seen has been pretty good, but I don't worship it. They have 6 episodes a season/series over there. I can't even stand by it on Cable any more because there are a lot of Cable shows walkin around with 12 episodes that are just as average as CSI and their 25 episode orders. This is going to be tough. The following is in no particular order yada, yada, yada...

Casablanca - probably the greatest movie I've ever seen. Was hesitant to watch it because of how much it's quoted and referenced, glad I did because I can't think of a single thing wrong with it.
The Godfather - 1 & 2 are both magnificent films deserving a spot on the list, but if I can only pick one it would have to be the first. A fantastic tragedy.
Up - Only movie I can think of were I cried because I was sad, cried because I was happy, and cried because I was happy and sad.
It's a Wonderful Life - Jimmy Stewart is probably my favorite actor of all time, and this is probably the greatest feel good movie of all time, that I happily watch every year.
Mr Smith Goes to Washington - I would vote for him.
Big Fish - Just a good movie.
The Longest Day - I wanted to include a war movie in my list, and this edged out Black Hawk Down.
Wall-E - This one's for Dave. In seriousness this is probably my favorite Pixar movie. I really loved the themes.
Remember the Titans - I love sports movies and this edged out Pride of the Yankees. Really shows that sports can represent something more than just the game.
Superman - A VHS rented from Blockbuster watched on a TV in my Mom's classroom during the summer was my first exposure to the Man of Steel. The movie has many flaws, and didn't age well, but Christopher Reeves is not one of them. I believed a man could fly. Also IMO the best score John Williams ever made.

When you study the production of that movie, it is a marvel that it was even good. The film went through 2 directors, 6 writers only 2 of them worked together, and a long lists of edits from the "Production Code." Yet it held together well, and is a solid drama/comedy.

Of course, Ingrid Bergman makes any film better...

The sonar stuff is just boring and really terrible. I really don't like the action sequence with Batman in the construction building, the boat sequence is hackneyed beyond belief. I also thought the stuff with Two-Face/Gordon/Batman at the very end just didn't work that well. I would think much fonder of it all if the movie ended with the hospital exploding/Joker burning the money, and somehow the last conversation with Joker/Batman stayed in the movie.

ALSO I am terrible at remembering to put actual number ratings. Math is 5/10

Average-to-good list, but MAN I hated Stardust. 6/10

While we're shitting on The Dark Knight, some other things since I saw it fairly recently again: the whole CSI bullshit with the bullet fragments getting fingerprints? I love to see Batman as a detective, don't get me wrong, but I'd rather see Sherlock Holmes than Horatio Caine. Every line that the co-driver in Dent's prisoner-transfer truck says was probably written by Michael Bay, and the movie would be better if he was never born.

#103

Espy

I don't think the message is stupid, I think the message is one thing, where the characters take it is a whole other thing... There's nothing wrong with wanting to not be controlled by consumerism or wanting to understand who you are and why you are the way you are, but where Tyler goes with it is... batty to say the least. Not to mention that part of the subtext in the film is how easy it is to find disassociated people who will go along with it and what that says about our culture in general.

Is Band of Brothers "legal" to add for the purposes of the thread? I would argue that it's the best film presentation of war I've ever seen, but it's unfair to compare it to movies which had 5 times less time to fit a narrative. Could any two consecutive episodes of BoB be considered sufficiently closed as their own narrative to compare to other war movies of similar length (the first two eps, for example).

Worth noting the message in Fight Club is given by an insane person. Only problem I have with the movie is it's fans who think it's gospel. Like the little arnarchist kiddies who think V for Vendetta needs to happen. Or people who don't realize Michael Corleone is a horrible person.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings

A few notes:
-I have to say even I'm a little surprised to have 2 Clint Eastwood films on there ("Unforgiven" and "Outlaw Josey Wales").
-Some of these films are sort of representative of certain "periods" i have gone through over the years: "Wings of Desire" and "Aguirre" represent German films of the 70's/80's, which I saw in college, "Ashes of Time" and "Hardboiled" represent my Hong Kong "phase" in the 90's.
-"The Incredibles" is on there because it is a film I can watch over and over again, which is not normal for me. I found this out when i was doing holiday work at a Suncoast Video and the ad-loop was broken so we have to put DVD's on instead. I got sick to death of any number of Disney and Dreamworks films, but I never got tired of the Incredibles.

Shawshank Redemption

Crazy Heart
The Postman
The Bourne Ultimatum

Possibly on the list but I need to watch again. Consider them on the list for now:
Inception

A lot of these, I realize after listing them, are movies that just resonated with me. There was something in them that I simply identified with or felt connected to. I realize some of them are seriously flawed but I find those don't trouble me or are even something that paradoxically enhances the film in some way. Tough to explain, I guess.

This I understand.

My "comfort food" list (not necessarily all "lousy", but definitely more on the kitschy side of the scale):

Predator
Aliens
Big Trouble in Little China
Brotherhood of the Wolf
District B13
Flash Point
Blade 2
Desperado
the Warriors
Dog Soldiers
Deep Rising
Zombieland
Sin City
Dawn of the Dead remake

Some movies are great as such that you need to see them once. Other movies are enjoyable upon multiple viewings. As for me, I'd rather spend money purchasing a movie that I'd rather watch over and over again than buy a movie that's great to see once. As such, my favorite movies are the ones I like to see repeatedly.

Oh no, I figured that's what you meant (hence my first list), but I can't honestly claim that any of my "guilty pleasure" movies are anything but that. That doesn't lessen my enjoyment of them.

Favorite doesn't mean high-ranking or impressive; it has to do with pleasure and lovability.

After having a day to think about it, I should've scrapped Hellboy in favor of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and then throw in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Pulp Fiction, and Coraline.

I have not seen half of these movies :( but what I have seen, I really liked. 9/10[/quote]Some of those are the benefit of a film degree and some of them the benefit of working as a projectionist (I got to see Unforgiven alot).

Random missive. The only Pixar movie on everyone's list is The Incredibles. I like the movie, but if you're putting a Pixar movie on there, I'd go with Wall-E every day of the week and twice on Sunday. What's y'alls deal? Is it the whole superhero love thing?
Speaking solely for myself I think it was partly a matter of it's timing. Up until the Incredibles came out, Pixar was in a bit of a rut, while they were clearly very skilled and very creative film-makers, they had really started making the same film over and over again. If felt like they hit a nadir with Cars, which was actually a pretty lousy film. The Incredibles was a breath of fresh air and I can't help but think that it reinvigorated Pixar as both Wall-E and Up were both very good films. But for me The Incredibles still stands out better than any of them.

The Mist
Rec (Brazilian Version)
Silence of the Lambs

There is a lot to hate about Die Hard 3 actually. It's just a standard action movie, not a "Die Hard" movie. It's not so bad though, to be honest. Still a solid list 7/10

Pan's Labrynth
Forrest Gump
Silence of the Lambs
Apocolypse Now

Whole series is a huge cop out! Especially Nightmare/Friday/Romero. I love those movies and have probably seen each one of each 5+ times. Each series is also wildly different as it goes on. What are your favorites from each? I have to respect a pretty genre-focused list. But I also have to knock points off for Hostel/Saw since I thought they were slightly lame. 7/10.

Here's the best I could do:

Dark City

Dawn of the Dead
The Dark Knight

Empire Strikes Back

Good Will Hunting is my current favorite movie, but the list is in alphabetical order

CastAway
Die Hard
Ghostbusters
Good Will Hunting (Robin Williams' best acting, IMHO)
The Little Mermaid (the pinnacle of Disney's animation movies)
The Matrix

The Shawshank Redemption
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original live action)

In no order, and these are favorites for various personal reasons, not any fucking merit. No social commentary, no real cinematographic reasons:

godzilla 1985 (i grew up on godzilla from my father...as a small child, I watched every single godzilla movie with him, and as they come out now, we see them as they get released here. Any that get in american theaters, he and I see opening night. this is the one he got me hooked on when I was like 7, and me and the old man still watch it to this day)

ghostbusters - classic of comedy, motherfuckers. my brothers and I watch it whenever we are all together, and can quote it verbatim)

return of the king - the fantasy nerd in me...this one brought it all out at once, i even teared up towards the end.

predator - fuck you, it is awesome. action and sci-fi, rolled into one, and done fucking perfect.

aliens - sci-fi war movie, mixed with a littl bit of horror. Watching this as a child had me engrossed, and I still can watch it at any moment of any day

necessary roughness - why...I do not know. this belongs no where on anyones mention, but i have always loved this movie.

empire strikes back - yeah, fuck off

how high - fuck you.

supertroopers - like how high...fuck you. Goes back to college and all the times we watched it, before after or while drinking. Still to this day we watch it when we get together

vampire hunter d - as a kid, it was the first anime id seen, over on sci fi - and my mind was blown at the time. still holds a special place with me, for whatever reason

anchorman - fucking funny - and keeps getting funnier after each watching

robocop - horribly violent, and fantastically great. Again harkens back to times as a child with my father. he and i watched a lot of movies when I visited him on the weekends as I grew up, and certain ones, we jsut watch now, and smile, remembering those times. 4 of them are on this list, they have that pull for me.

they Live: I love john Carpenter. all of his movies. every single one. I own them all. the bad and the mediocre. And they are all favorites of mine. This started it for me. fucking A. I would go into it, but carpenter movies for me are like heroin. i know its bad, but i cannot help myself. this is my favorite of them

My favorite God damn movies, good or not:

Batman (1989) - One of my first theater movies (I grew up in a town without a theater) and probably the prime reason for my descent into nerddom. I fucking loved this movie and had my room covered in posters and shit all from the movie.

Commando - Because it's rad, pure rad.

Terminator 2 - One of, in my opinion, the most perfect action movies ever made.

The Thing - Same as above, only horror/suspense. I share Shannow's Carpenter love, even down to fucking Vampires.

Robocop - First movie I ever watched behind my parents back after I was expressly told I wasn't allowed to watch it.

Ravenous - I have no fucking idea why I like this weird black comedy about an 1840s northern California army outpost and all the awesome cannibalism therein.

Dirty Harry - Loved it, love the whole God damn series, but I'll go with the first one.

The Big Lebowski - This is the movie my brothers and I watch whenever we manage to all get together (which is maybe once every two years nowadays).

I still plan to make my Shannow style list, as Frank has appropriately done, but something else first.

Something's been bugging me about this thread for the last couple days and I couldn't put my finger on what exactly. It wasn't exactly like Nick's outburst, because I don't give a crap what Charlie thinks (like most people). I figured it out today--the qualifiers for this topic are deceptive. Probably not on purpose, because Charlie has said he's confused by the words "favorite", and "best", and the English language in general. So for him, the best movies are his favorites (I won't say it's vice versa; that'd make him incredibly conceited). And he said he should've called the thread top/best movies instead of favorite. Favorite has to do with liking--people acknowledge it's on a subjective level, and a "fuck you, I like it" status.

However, while Charlie was judging the movie lists (unbeknown to the rest of us, on a "top/best" scale) he was using the term "like" as a qualifier. Ex: "I didn't like _____." That creates a double-standard in the topic, because like would imply it's about favorites, but he then says it's about objective top/best and he misused his terminology. The topic is inherently two-faced.

Bad Charlie. Very bad Charlie.

Because Charlie's too busy for his thread. But sure...

The Godfather (1972)
The Godfather: Part II (1974)
Network (1976)
12 Angry Men (1957)
Annie Hall (1977)
The Third Man (1949)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Die Hard (1988)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Goodfellas (1990)
Road to Perdition (2002)
Rocky (1976)
A Serious Man (2009)
Taxi Driver (1976)
This is Charlie's best movies list. And it's going to get a 10, of course. Sure, Rocky is one big cliche today, but that's because it had an impact. Road to Perdition isn't the best mob movie, but it's a very strong film and he's got a bunch of great gangster films on that list. As Espy said though, it's a very safe list. There's nothing on here that's dodgy, that anyone would question. It's Charlie's list of best movies, but not a real favorites list. Not a list concerned with watching again and again for enjoyment's sake.

Here is a list of Charlie favorites we know of:

Talledega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby
Dirty Work
Die Hard
Ghostbusters
Rate it. I give it a 7/10, even though it's one short of the minimum requirements. I'm that kind of guy.

#160

Charlie Don't Surf

The Lovely Boehner

I really don't consider Talledega Nights or Dirty Work among my favorite movies. I just have watched them the most times. Dirty Work was my favorite movie when I was in middle/high school and I watched it first thing every day I played sick and skipped classes. Talledega Nights is really funny, but I saw it so much because my post-college gang of drunkard friends and I played it after every party or drunken night out for a year straight almost.

Pretty good list, minus Serenity. I guess I should see this Dark City movie, eh? I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and think you mean Dawn from the 50s and not the Zach Snyder one. 7/10

Good list, couple of weird picks. Something About Mary is legit good, I'd put it ahead of a few things on your actual list. Bruce Willis has been not-john-mcclane in a lot of movies. I think you're the first person I've heard of that didn't laugh at how bad Seven Pounds was, so kudos for that. 7/10

In no order, and these are favorites for various personal reasons, not any fucking merit. No social commentary, no real cinematographic reasons:

Actually a lot of these movies have profound social commentary and great cinematography. And it's probably subconsciously why you like them :) Also half of the movies you said "fuck off" about I really really love and enjoy. Buuuut this list still has a couple stinkers. 6/10

Shit, even if you follow the footsteps of that fucking **** of a mother you have and be the neighborhood cum dumpster...at least you will be contributing something to others around you.

There, I feel better. Chuck hurt my feelings rating mylist I posted that he would say he would rate. How dare he! That, and he is a fucking shithead. His movie tastes suck, his meanings in the thread title are ambiguous, and frankly, the only way he can feel any moment of pride in himself is trashing on those over the web.

it is a sad, small ego he has, and this is most likely caused by the massive rapings he received throughout his weak childhood. This also explains the insane white knighting he does here over the internet! powerless in real life, he instead uses the safety of the internet to try to champion things, for the creature that dwells behind the keyboard is, in fact, a pussy. But that is okay, you fucking cum burp. you continue to do what it is you do!

....Is that the reaction I am suppsoed to give this thread. I think it is, but I am not quite sure.

As promised, for your mocking or praise, here's a list of movies that are favorites for reasons that aren't cinematic greatness (although some of them are great movies)

Scream
- I love horror movies, and this is one of the slickest and most 90s horror movies you'll find, which is perfect since I grew up in the 90s. It also has a lot of awesome references to my favorite shitty 80s horror movies thrown in along the way. The Drew Barrymore twist is one of my favorite things in movies ever.

South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut
- I went through a long period loving this show, and this was the climax of that. Also a really goofy and fun musical with really catchy songs.

Swingers
- This is probably the first ever "indie" type movie I saw and really loved. It's a guilty pleasure since it kind of has a really objectifying view of women. But it's legitimately a good movie. I have watched it many many a time when I needed a confidence boost.

(500) Days of Summer
Adventureland
- Lumping these together, I have been watching them a lot lately/ever since they came out. (500) has real personal significance to me because of a relationship/breakup that's eerily similar to the movie. Adventureland has a really great soundtrack that's used to perfection in the movie itself. I also am the proud owner of a GAMES GAMES GAMES t-shirt.

Major League
BASEketball
-These are probably my favorite two sports movies of all-time. Major League might actually be the BEST sports movie of all time. I usually watch it 3-4 times a year, around opening day, during the season, and after the World Series. BASEketball combined Parker/Stone with David Zucker parody insanity to really good effect. Some stuff doesn't work, but it's still insanely funny. Also the really cynical opening is strangely clairvoyant to what was going on in sports' near future.

Walk Hard
- Another great zany parody type movie/musical that I've seen a whole WHOLE lot of times. Half the movie is quoted as regular catchphrases and jokes among my friends. I legitimately think John C Reilly could have gotten an Oscar nod for his performance in a weaker year if the Academy ever gave a fuck about comedy acting.

The Cable Guy
- I always liked this movie a lot more than everyone else seemed to. And it struck a special chord with me since I was basically raised on Nick @ Nite. The running thing with him giving classic TV character names and addresses - I got that before the reveal at the end just from being a huge dork.

The Happening
The Room
- My life would have a lot less joy without these movies' existence. I have watched them several times in various stages of drunkeness and with rifftraxes and different groups of friends making fun of them. They are just both the perfect mix of inexplicably bad and unintentionally hilarious.

I do think that Mary is a really complete comedy, but it's not something that I pop into the DVD player whenever I'm bored and be entertained. Since I can only watch it once the jokes have time to be fresh again, I don't put it on my list.

You're right, Bruce Willis has played more "non-John McClaine" roles, but the movies that I find I enjoy him most in are the ones where he plays the "down-on-his-luck cop/soldier/etc in the wrong place at the wrong time, grumpass". For me, the roles I remember are those roles, the Sixth Sense, and Unbreakable. For the Sixth Sense, which I unoriginally enjoy, he took a departure from his normal role, but I don't think he fully grasped MNS's direction until Unbreakable. It was such a subtle, low key performance...more powerful than his other films.

The other guilty pleasures are movies that I used to watch on HBO and Cinemax during the summer...over and over. I was in choir when The Little Mermaid came out and my mom would dump me off at the theater to watch movies when she went on her pot runs, so I ended up watching it, and later TMNT, around 20 times in the theater. The concession kids at the dollar movie knew me by name.

As for Seven Pounds, I think I like it so much because Will Smith didn't play Will Smith. I'm not the biggest fan of Ali and while I do think Smith was superb in that movie, I'm not entertained by it. I watched Seven Pounds a little drunk, so I admit to not seeing the twist coming. It kind of punched me in the gut a little and I left more impressed than I should have been. It was better than his other recent offerings in I, Robot, Hancock, and I am Legend.

But, a 7 out of 10 from you is pretty good, so I'll take it.

You should really see Pursuit of Happyness, and (especially) Six Degrees of Separation. Six Degrees is amazing, and you'd never have known that it came out in the middle of the Fresh Prince era except for his obvious youth.

Well, Charlie put his money where his mouth is, so I have 80% less to bitch about. Damn. I'm not gonna rate it because I've only seen two movies on there (Scream, The Cable Guy) and that wouldn't be fair, but it was good to post such a list. I think people will be able to identify with him more as a person and less like an erection.

Shannow style list, with many fucks!

The Fountain - This is the most beautiful movie I've seen, in terms of cinematography/visuals, music, and the story. While it is on one level a love story, it's also (and I think just as importantly) a story about a man understanding death. It's oddly grim and then also hopeful. I wish I'd seen it in theaters.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - Mother-fucking fun. Some have said For a Few Dollars More is a better film, but Eli Wallach bring so much energy to the film, and he's such a lovable scoundrel--so is Clint Eastwood's character too. This movie kept me guessing the whole time on my first viewing, and it never feels like it's 3 hours long. Just damn fun. Amazing shots of the desert too.

Jaws - Probably don't need to explain this one much, except I will say this is one of those perfect little stories, where there's nothing you could really excise that wouldn't hurt the movie. I love the characters, the dialogue, and the intensity.

The Prestige - There's something new to discover every time I watch this. Again, folding timelines, I enjoy. But really it's a cool story and... there's a lot to be impressed with, but it's all so spoilery.

Princess Mononoke - Another movie that impresses me with its beauty, and though the characters aren't all that well-developed, their personality clashes are strong. I like the take on nature and magic here as well, and the last 15 minutes of the movie are killer.

Casablanca - Dialogue, characters, yay. Also, the movie's so fucking charm but not in the "please, please like me" way some movies are these days. I don't really care about the story a ton; I just love listening to the characters talk to each other.

The 7th Voyage of Sinbad - Fuck you. I don't know if anyone here's even seen or heard of this, but it was one of the better movies featuring Ray Harryhausen's effects. This is the one without any boring parts--the only section without awesome monsters is the ship going back to the island, and then it gets silly as the sirens drive the criminals crazy. The monsters are great. The music's fun too. It's an awesome fantasy movie.

The Incredibles - I get what others might say of Toy Story or Wall-E being better... I don't care. There are movies where I value certain scenes in the sense that I enjoy the memorability or power of them even more than other parts of the film. This movie has scene after scene that is special. And I never get tired of the bit where Dash realizes he's running on water, giggles, and then speeds off as the music kicks into high gear.

The Dark Crystal - I can't stand Tolken. I love LOTR's story and characters, and the movies are glorious, but I don't like that book and I don't like the effect it's had on fantasy where so much of it has to be basically medieval Europe with barely anything of note or interest. The Dark Crystal is my kind of fantasy story, with an untamed world whose denizens are only somewhat aware of the bigger picture, of anyone even believing they have power, of monsters and weird creatures being the normal. I also adore the Henson puppetry, but that's a given.

Hellboy - Fuck it, I'm keeping it on the list. I love both the movies (and anything del Toro has done, honestly), but I like the first one more. The story feels stronger, and I can't get enough of the colors and character designs. Funny dialogue too--oddly, Myers is really the protagonist of this film when Hellboy should've been since he's more sympathetic here than in the sequel, whereas Hellboy is the protagonist of the sequel where he's more of a jerk than here. But regardless, I enjoy this movie a lot and can watch it again and again.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - Standing aside from being fucking impressed with the special effects, this is actually a good story at its core. All the added toons just make it special. Such an awesome movie, from start to finish. And Roger Rabbit doesn't annoy me at all. Haters gonna hate.

The Nightmare Before Christmas - Emo/goth/Burton blah blah blah blah I don't care. The songs are constant, fun, they actually move the plot and characters along rather than stopping the story in its tracks like in Disney movies, and yeah, I love the dark and weird aesthetic. It's not perfect (Oogie Boogie is awesome, but he really feels thrown in there, like the writers realized late in that they needed an antagonist) but I love it.

Pulp Fiction - Like Casablanca, I can just sit and listen to the characters talk and not give a damn about the story (or in this case, stories). But the stories are still good too. I never get tired of this one.

Coraline - I'm usually one who puts a book on a pedestal above a movie version, and the book is one of my favorites, but I actually think the care Henry Selleck took to craft the story in a new way might have transcended the quickness in which Coraline finds herself in a bad place in the book. I question if I should or shouldn't put this on the list because it's still so new, but I love it dearly. Coraline is a fun character, the situation builds slowly and carefully like the beldam weaving her web, and while it never really gets scary for me as an adult, it can be creepy as hell.

Hmm... not enough...

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.

There. It's perfect.
