It's really lame and weird to think old movies are on some weird different plane. They're still movies! They are very different, granted, but a movie from 1943 compared to a movie from 2010 isn't much different than comparing Hot Tub Time Machine to No Country for Old Men.
Lawlz, that's not the point. If I included all of my favorite older movies, my list would be like fifty films long. I had trouble paring it down to twenty-some as it was.
But okay if I must, I'm-a go ahead and complete that shit with:
I fucking ADORE all of the Marx Brothers films from
The Cocoanuts (1929) through to
A Night In Casablanca (1946) with the notable exception of
Room Service (1938) which was
NOT written for the brothers and frankly is, aside from a few gags delivered by Harpo, painful to watch. Of course, some films are better than others. The more prominent the love interests, the more bogged down their films tended to be. If only the audiences of the time could have been trusted just to laugh.
The Treasure of the Sierre Madre (Bogey's greatest, in my humble opinion)
Harvey ('You've also got the screwiest uncle who ever stuck his puss in the nut house!')
Some Like It Hot ('I'd like to BORROW a cup of that sugar!'
BEST AND MOST CLASSY SEX COMEDY EVER, PERIOD)
The Odd Couple ('It's twelve floors, not eleven!')
The Great Escape
Sting
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Thin Man
After the Thin Man (Brilliant villain ;D)
Another Thin Man ('He smells like a dog - he smells like Asta!')
The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (This film has a guy named
Kockenlocker - I kid you not)
Libeled Lady
Arsenic and Old Lace ('You'll like the bodies in my attic! NONE of them are gentlemen!')
The Lemon Drop Kid
Road To Morocco
Road To Utopia
Road To Rio
Charade ('Which view would you prefer?' 'The one you're blocking!')
The Man Who Came To Dinner (I watch this
every Christmas. It drives most people I know nuts but I happen to consider it one of the most hilarious films ever based on a play).
Gunga Din (yeah it's a racist old film, but Grant turns in one of his goofiest roles aside from maybe Mortimer Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace)
The Philadelphia Story
Pat and Mike ('Why don't 'e examine me?!')
Bringing Up Baby ('I can't give you anything but LOVE ... baby; dream a while, scheme a while', etc.)
Cool Hand Luke
Nothing Sacred ('I will remove you from the LAND of the LIVING!')
Seven Samurai
The Hidden Fortress
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer ('I know a man ...')
My Favorite Blonde
My Favorite Brunette (God I love this film ... I wish there was a decent print of it still around. Regardless, Hope does his thing and he does it well. Peter Lorre lends his usual awesomeness)
Casablanca
The Lost World (1924) (I'm a big fan of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story - read it four times - and I bought the silent film on DVD for cheap years ago. Absolutely love it!)
The Gold Rush
The Great Dictator
Modern Times
City Lights (that boxing scene is one of the most hilarious fucking things to ever be committed to film)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Rear Window
The Magnificent Seven
His Girl Friday
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (I don't care how cheesy it was, that movie is a goddamn gem)
It's A Wonderful Life (this one used to bug me a little, but I've grown to appreciate it over the years, especially since it features one of my two favorite actors of Golden Age Hollywood - the other one being Grant)
The Paleface ('Gimme some water ...
in a dirty glass!)
Adam's Rib
Mind, I've seen most of these movies literally dozens of times. I had the greatest big sister of all time growing up. Well, still do, lol. She rented boatloads of old movies from the local library 'cause our parents were all uptight and shit, and old movies (what with the Hays Code and all) were great in our house, so we watched some really cool shit. Nowadays when I hear someone talk trash about old movies, I want to hang myself by the shoelaces until dead.
