Ariz. hospital loses Catholic status over abortion case - USATODAY.com

ok. I can understand some of it, but I guess the rules (Catholics rules) are pretty strict. The doctors determine that the pregnancy could result in both death (baby and mother) due to high blood pressure. My sister blood pressure spiked during her last week of her pregnancy and almost died giving birth to her son. So I guess I can relate somewhat, but from the article (one side of the story) the doctors know what they are doing and abort the baby to save the mother's life.

Now... the other part of the violation confuse me
According to The Arizona Republic, the other violations, he said, are taking place under the auspices of the Mercy Care Plan, a nonprofit health insurance plan for poor patients who qualify under the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System.

Olmstead said St. Joseph's has not been communicative, allowing him to have input into such decisions. He added that he only recently learned of the Mercy Care Plan, and that hospital officials were unaware the plan violated Catholic directives.
sooooooo..... people who are too poor to pay for medical bills falls under this plan (and thus CAN pay their bills) are bad people? (I'm guessing since I don't know the whole story that this plan allow abortion to be covered?)

Edit: and it is things like this that I am no longer Catholic.

According to the article the surgery to save the mother was the main cause. But you got the second point wrong:

He said he recently learned that Catholic Healthcare West also is responsible for contraceptive counseling, voluntary sterilization, and other practices he said violate the ethical and religious directives.

According to The Arizona Republic, the other violations, he said, are taking place under the auspices of the Mercy Care Plan, a nonprofit health insurance plan for poor patients who qualify under the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System.
So the hospital was helping patients with contraceptives and voluntary sterilization (almost certainly vasectomies) under its healthcare plan for the poor. THOSE are the other violations, not helping poor people.

Still, that's all pretty cold-blooded of the church.

I'm still in shock that the Pope reversed his stance on condoms in Africa personally.
He didn't, he just said that if you're gonna be sinning by having sex outside of marriage (probably prostitution) you might as well also sin by using a condom...

I think they even just put out a book to clarify that...

If the Catholic church decides to pull itself from a hospital, they may do so for whatever reason they desire. Since they provide no funding for the hospital, then perhaps the community will be better off if the hospital starts working for the patients rather than for the church.

The story suggests a lack of communication between the hospital and the church, so I wonder if the hospital wasn't already interested in losing it's catholic status, and maneuvered politically so that they could lose it without being seen as completely in the wrong, or seen as being the ones to cut the catholic church away.

The "100%" certainty of mother and child death if the pregnancy continues - at merely 11 weeks pregnancy - sounds somewhat suspicious, but since we have no access to the case history and diagnosis we can only take their word on it.

Yea. I only know a little about the risk of high blood pressure and pregnancy from my sister's experience. She was constanly monitor 24 hours for 1 week (last week before birth) The doctor said my sister was very lucky cause she could have died from it. The doctor also suggest they should not have any more children since the next one could kill her.

That was the most terrifying week of my life. I have only one sibling and I don't want to lose the only one I had.
