Minor victory thread

Chopsticks, having been the bane of my existence for most of my youth, have now been conquered! I can finally use them properly and actually eat a whole meal with them. Hooray!

1. Antonio stopped Moonwalking and is moving forward (and standing up against the cd shelves). His first victim, my favorite Raul Seixas album, the one he did with Paulo Coelho, didn't have a chance.

2. Finally jailbroke the 4.21 iPad, its bad enough waiting until December for itto launch, and to add insult to injury, only to find out there are no games in the Brazilian app store. Now off to find an iPad games torrent.....

My new earbuds (finally) came in the mail today. My previous pair had the cord break just before Christmas and the replacements got backordered until now. I got a great deal, $34 (including tax & shipping), for a pair of Klipsch Image S3 earbuds. They sound a lot better than my old pair.

Meeting with a principal tomorrow who spoke with a woman I know at the Diocese. She has been helping me out so much and singing my praises... it's really flattering. She said it's not really a formal interview, because there are no current positions open. Still, if I seem like the kind of person she'd want to call to be a substitute, that would be just lovely.

Only problem is I'm afraid to leave the "Religion" space in my application blank since I'm not really anything right now. Technically, according to their own laws, I'm still Catholic, because that's how I was baptized. So saying I am isn't a lie... but still... this is awkward. If she asks me about my faith, I don't know what I'm going to say.

I know enough to teach religion classes, which I would have to do as an elementary teacher. Maybe that'll be enough to convince them. I've been brushing up on my catechism just in case.

I wish I could offer some advice on that, Seej. Being an R.E. teacher, I hear, can be somewhat precarious a position depending on the school, if they consider your own devotion as well as your pedagogical capabilities.

Heck, I dunno... Just tell them you are Catholic, because that's what you are, officially at least. Right? Most employers will be more tolerant of questioning one's religious beliefs after you've been working for them for a while, rather than during the interview process.

That's pretty much what I decided to do. If they ask me any detailed questions, I'll do my best to answer diplomatically. I wouldn't be against teaching kids theology. I'm just concerned about parents or teachers not liking it.

First night back at training. everybody else has been there for a week and a half. Still managed to keep up, and finish 95% of whats required for my 2nd black belt grading.Still have 2 months training ahead of me. Also my arms and legs are dead from the new weight routine I started yesterday. 25 military presses and 25 squats with karate training the next day = worst idea ever. Think I may have to re-adjust my workout schedule.

On the down side, I have lost 5 kilos from being sick, am now hovering at 55kg (120 pounds). Anybody wanting to lose some weight, please send it my way.

Dammit. Our new grading syllabus involves a bit of grappling and throws. The guy im usually partnered with has at least 30kg (60+ pounds) on me. Kinda makes it hard, esp considering he is experienced at grappling and I'm not.

This semester:
1. I am teaching two sections of Intro to Microbiology Lab (~22 students each).
2. Have a committee meeting to set qualifying exam time this semester
3. Have a qualifying exam later this semester
4. Have a poster presentation over my research in the first week of Feb
5. Have a oral presentation over my research in the second week of Apr
6. Trying to write my second paper with my boss breathing down my neck.
7. Probably something I am forgetting here, but will be equally sucky and time consuming as the above items.

My minor victory? I'm not dead yet.

Another weekend to look forward to with the girlfriend.

I mentioned that my guild was going to do a Heroic Lich King 25man Achievement group tonight about 2hrs into her being there, but told her I was skipping it so we could do somethingelse. Her response was somewhere in the ballpark of:

"Oh hell no, you're going, you're going to kick the LKs ass and I'm gonna be yelling at the idiots standing in fire"

Have I mentioned I'm in love with this woman?

Last night the cook did not throw out $0.10 worth of avocado (that cost me $1) that was rotten. And added it to my burger. When I sent it back they just put fresh avocado on the same, cold burger and added more fries to the plate. I had to complain to the manager. So I got my meal comped.

This likely belongs on the rant thread.

If you let this one go, Jiarn, I am going to personally come over and beat you senseless.

I started my Masters program on Thursday! I should have started on Wednesday, but Obama was in town and they thought it would be easier on everybody if they just cancelled everything.

I've had some pretty bad sleeping issues lately; going to bed at about 1, not falling asleep until 5, then waking up anytime between 1-3 PM. I've tried fixing my sleep schedule many times, but to no avail.

Last night I set an alarm before bed to go off at 7:05, then put it on the other side of the room so I had incentive to get up in the morning. I woke up at exactly 7:05, but my alarm was dead silent. I got up and checked it, and I had forgotten to turn it on completely. Basically, my own body woke me up at the exact time I intended to through an alarm.

Badass.

Made over a hundred dollars on Ebay from stuff we found from cleaning that we weren't using.

And got 50 in store credit at Gamestop for trading some crappy games.

See, kids? Cleaning can be fun!

Between the 10 percent bonus from the Powerpoint card and that day's deal of getting an extra 10 for every three games and an extra 20 for every five games, we got more through Gamestop for games no one wanted, like Diddy Kong Racing DS and Unlimited Saga.

Only if you buy a new game, and then trade it in within a week because you're done with it (in which case, said person should use Gamefly or Blockbuster to rent). In our case, we found numerous old games we didn't want and odds are Gamestop isn't going to be able to sell. But we did buy Epic Mickey with the store credit, so it evens out... sort of...

I've dropped a third notch on my belt. I'm down ~30lbs (~13.5 kilograms) from this time last year. I've even dropped a notch on my watch band, which I don't think has happened before. I'm about 165lbs. now, and I haven't weighed this little since I was 15.

Why isn't this in the Epic Win Thread? I'm still not healthy enough to exercise very much, and I really miss that. It sucks that even little things wear me out, even after all this progress. Ugh, I don't want this to turn into a rant. It's just that the victories I've been getting haven't been what I've really wanted.

I finally tracked down the Season 3 DVD box set of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Ordered it, paid for it, will arrive this week :)

If you don't hear from me from a few days next week, assume I'm on an Avatar bender.
