I don't see a whole lot of difference between Mike Haggar and how Zangief plays in Street Fighter.* Still, it's a good addition.

* I haven't played Street Fighter 4.
That's why Haggar hasn't appeared in any Street Fighter properties or crossover games. It's also why Zangief won't be appearing in mvc3.

This is intentional. Zangief and Haggar have a long standing, but friendly, rivalry as they have met in the ring many times over the years (in the back story at least), dating back to at least Haggar's days as a professional wrestler. The only reason you haven't seen Haggar fight Zangief in a SF game is because Haggar is too busy being the Mayor of Mad City (as well as kicking the ass of every gangbanger in the city) to drop everything and participate. I guess Guy can find the time to do it because he's not a full time politician.

One of the reasons they seem to have similar styles is because they are both grapple centric wrestlers and because they both have incorporated moves from their rival, out of admiration and homage to each other. Zangief uses Haggar's Spinning Lariat and Hagger uses Zangief's Spinning Piledriver, though neither of them can perform said moves as well as their original creators. In this regard, they are similar to Ryu and Ken: Both have near identical move sets, but each specializes differently, so they fight differently.

As far as gameplay goes, you can't really have the subtle distinctions between the two that you can between Ryu and Ken and still have them both function reasonably well. So, rather than wasting processor space on two characters who would be even more clone-ish than all the shotokan characters, Capcom never bothered putting Haggar and Zangief in the same game.

That's basically the reason you never see them together. But you never know... one day we might get a Saturday night Slammasters live remake and Zangief might show up...

BTW, doesn't Zangief have a Mike Haggar costume in SF4?

Okay... so as long as we get some Dead Rising love from Capcom, my wishlist will be complete. Every other character will just be icing on the cake.

I'm interested to see how Taskmaster will be. He doesn't seem to just be a copy of the opponent, which is probably good for some of blaster types.

I doubt they'll just drop him. It's likely they will just make him and Chuck DLC characters, like they are with Jill. That's one of the great things about DLC: It lets the devs go back to cut ideas and flesh them out into full blown content.
I hope so. I couldn't explain to you why, but I just feel like they need a representative from Dead Rising to make the game complete.

I'm still perturbed that there still is no actual Megaman in the game. He was my favorite character in the previous two games, so not seeing him in the lineup is frustrating.

Hsien-Ko and Sentinel announced:

...despite it being a tad redundant, I'll say it again: WHERE THE HELL IS MEGAMAN?

Hsien-Ko? This games gets more awesome by the minute.

Sick to my stomach that we have Storm AND Sentinel back. All that's left is to put Cable back in the line up and we can ruin the game all over again. Hopefully they tweak the game system enough to allow for more balance and have more Top Tier than Middle/Low Tier this time around.

Just because somebody was good in the previous game doesn't mean they're going to be good in this one. MvC2 was a mess of code, and it's surprising it turned out as good as it did. This is going to be much more meticulously balanced and playtested.

Which is what I'm hoping for, and you're right, they won't necessarily play the same. None the less, core elements are already very obviously in place. I'd have been more than content with neither of them in the game.

Obviously, it's what people "know" so they try it in a new game. Happened with every Tekken for the longest time. You had people refusing to play anything but Kazama or Mishima style.

That more has to do with companies being more liberal with how their protagonists are balanced. It's why Ryu and Akuma tend to be strong characters in Street Fighter games. In MvC series, there is no solid protagonist for them to give that bump.

Cable was good completely by accident. They didn't plan on giving him an infinitely repeatable super.
Storm and Magneto were completely where they were because of Fly. I don't think they planned on Fly being that abusable.
Sentinel had a combination of fly, as well as the ability to perform a fullscreen loop with very little chance of escape.

Capcom knows exactly what to look for, and I'm pretty sure they won't let this game be as much of a complete fuckup.

I don't know if they (capcom) openly embrace balance in their fighters. Which is fine. But with a roster as large as MvC2/3, with as many supers/assists and general shenanigans, there will always be something overlooked or some major glitch. It is impossible to game-test this. This is why namco releases tekken into the arcade, gets feedback from korea/japan, and edit/fix mistakes, repackage, add a few new characters and put some letters on the title like D or B or R. Many scoff at this tactic but you tend to love namco if you are actually in an arcade enjoying bob's toned down ws2 or julia's lack of B! out of d/f 1 +3_4 being corrected. That being said, capcom will throw this game out to the masses, there will be horrible broken elements like gambit being able to snap back an opponent and jump off the screen for ever and ever, amen, or atomic busting somebody into the floor to be stuck permanently, and some korean fight team will figure out how to break a character past God tier.

In addition, mags and storm were good because of their 8 direction air dash mixup into infinite followups, which is actually really hard to do on a stick and impossible on a game pad. I know many complain about it, but i was never able to get the hang of it so i give props to those that can. Sentinel on the other hand, had the highest starting defense in the game, every move did CHIP damage (stupid) and he had the fastest air dash/air cancel in the game (with two plausible assists). AVHB was not the only thing that made cable dumb. But if you look at the entire god tier from MvC 2, it was all marvel. Two of the three best assists were also marvel. My guess is, Capcom will try to up their side in MvC 3 because of their roster non-factor in tournament play from the last game.

in the end though, this is a really FUN fanboy/girl game that should be enjoyed casually. I can't wait to play this in the arcades and I really hope hsien-ko wasn't anakaris' replacement (though, it probably was). Anak was the the hizzzzieeeeee and hella fun to play!

I want to play this game with friends. Sometimes I may play online with random folks. Anything else is unimportant to me, so I'm not too concerned about the balance. It'll be just fine for casual players like me. The hardcore folks are S.O.L. as far as I'm concerned.

Well I'm glad you don't care about anyone but yourself. -sigh-

Casual players isn't what made the game the breakout that it was, and alive for as long as it was or why this 3rd part was even made.

Totally. I mean, the .001% of people that purchased the game completely kept it alive.

This is how capitalism works. I worry about me, you worry about you, and in the end the company will try to find ways to satisfy us both.

Don't get me wrong. I don't mind if Capcom worries about the hardcore crowd. I think that would probably a wise move on their part. What I'm saying is that there are plenty of people out there who, like me, are just casual players who don't worry about balance as much. And I think you're wrong when you underestimate casual players. We buy a lot of stuff too.
