I did only say it was coming back - not that it was new.
If it connects this time - it could get a new run.

I doubt Fillion would leave Castle to do a cable show. I also doubt he would do both simultaneously. Best case scenario is a made for TV movie, I figure.

I think almost any Firefly fan would love more new stuff from the Firefly universe - TV movie or a "second season" would be great if done with the original cast...

Maybe we could actually find out some of wth Book really was before the series...

Yeah no kidding. I was watching the show thinking "oh boy, can't wait to find out more about Book!" and then nothing...
I guess they tell you a little more in the graphic novel.

Alrighty, TONS of great support, including link throughs from Reddit, Geeks of Doom, io9, and a great showing from the Twitter Browncoats!
Since as many questions are rolling in as traffic, here’s a post to answer lots of them.

  1. What do I do now? Check back in a few days, we’ll have the pledge system online. Spread the signal, http://dft.ba/-firefly far and wide. FB, Twitter, where-ever.
  2. Where can I pledge? No where yet, it’ll be here.
  3. Wait, are you people fund raising to distribute the episodes online? No, no. This is to get new content rolling. That’s why owning the DVD’s or getting Netflix isn’t a solution.
  4. 300 million? Nathan pulled that figure out of nowhere. We likely would not really need that much. We need to do two things with funding: pay for the property (buying it from Fox) and pay for any costs of new content. On the former, the Terminator series license was $30 million. We probably don’t need even that to buy the rights.
  5. Use kickstarter.com – Great suggestion, and that will make sense when we’re looking at the cost of producing the content. We don’t think we can use that to acquire the property as part 1, but we’re going to find out early next week.
  6. Can you be a non-profit for this? Short answer is yes. Tax exempt status is tougher to come by, but forming a non-profit corporation is a lot easier than you think. The admins work with non-profits professionally, so we do have some knowledge in this area.
  7. Should you really be putting all that fund-raising effort towards this? Corollary: There are starving people somewhere, help them! Well, there are projects to decrease suck and projects to increase awesome. You ‘re talking about the former, we’re working on one of the latter. See this great post for an example and explanation.
  8. Should we fund raise just to have someone else to own it? The thought process was perhaps to make it communally owned by the organization. We won’t know until we get some buy-in from Mr. Fillion or Mr. Whedon or Mr. Minear.
  9. If the fans own it, does that mean the fans can make official content? Well, that’s trying to figure out the color of the car that someone might want to buy from a factory that still isn’t built yet. In other words, we’ll get to that if we can clear more relevant hurdles. Cool concept though!
  10. What network would show this? SyFy? Science? Who said anything about being on TV? Not sure it’s relevant, but when content is made, bids can be taken from various networks.
  11. Bids? You said non-profit. There’s still a lot of money that would be made from lots of things that fans wouldn’t have to pay for, like merchandise, things like that. Those would be revenue. Non-profits can have revenue, it just must be put to use. Likely, it would fund more content, but if not, then it could be redistributed to some of the ‘decrease suck’ causes.
  12. This has been tried before, what makes you special? Who the heck are you?! Link us to some prior attempts. And tried before isn’t a guarantee of failure. One must try. And as for us, we’re Browncoats.
  13. If the project doesn’t happen, will I get my money back? Not going to ask for any actual cash until we’re further down the road and have buy-in. When that happens, if the project still doesn’t take off, yes, all people would get their donations back, 100%.
Hopefully, this answers a lot of your great questions!
Addition: No, we’re not Nathan and we’ve not heard from him yet.
The fans are tryin.

You know... As much as I'd love foe it to come back, it just wouldn't be the same without Wash. :-/
Unless... they completely ignore Serenity and keep Wash. :D

i thought i read somewhere that fillion said he'd love to return to firefly if it were possible.
anyway, i'll watch these. i haven't seen them in years, so i'd like to see if my opinion changed on the show or not.

Watch Serenity. The main villain is a younger version of Book.

I own Serenity. Are we really sure that The Operative is actually what Book was though? My vote is maybe - not enough info for a definite yes or no.
I heard they explain Book's past in the graphic novels. But I also heard the graphic novels aren't very good, and so I haven't read them and can neither confirm or deny.

At least we got a Firefly reference on Castle. :) Halloween costume and also a subtle 2x2 hands of blue.
They did another good one fairly recently where Castle spoke Chinese unexpectedly. Or so I heard.

Castle is the best thing on TV right now.

Though, this is kinda neat. Maybe the strong ratings will cause some interest from the SUITS?

If getting a full major motion picture, funded by the fans wasn't enough to impress them, I don't think anything will.

Well, it's almost a decade AFTER the show got canceled and people on the net are still into the show.... a show of ONE season (what 12 episodes?) and one movie that sold extremely well on the DVD market. There's definitely a certain level of interest from viewers. If anyone else but FOX would hold the right to this show, it would see the light of day and probably won't get a stick in its wheels as it's trying to learn to be marketable.

In other words, Fox can suck my dick.

And before the talk of the poor ratings, Fox didn't take into account the terrible time-slot they provided the show, the fact they switched up episodes and preempted it for sport events. They also failed to acknowledge the existence of PVRs.

Hey another reference on Castle this week! His mom and daughter go to a spa named Serenity. She says something like, "what, you've never heard of Serenity?" Close-up of Castle who pauses for a sec and looks to his daughter. :)

Anyway, another thought occurred to me... To get the original cast, they'd have to take Baldwin off of Chuck and I love that show, too. So... If they could find a way to keep the original cast, forget The movie happened, keep Wash and keep Castle and Chuck going, then I'd be a happy panda.

Yeah, if for any reason they were able to do anything new it would have to be movies or mini-series.

I'm happy with anything.

I laughed hard. It's a great show really.

Apparently the Browncosts are going nuts over this.

I have a feeling Chuck won't last much longer - but that's not based on much, I haven't seen numbers or anything.
Certainly, this season hasn't felt as strong as the others, and it's always been on shaky ground.

The sad thing is even if something did come of this the chances of getting the whole cast back is probably very, very low.

Chuck? You mean the show that has Adam Baldwin and Yvonne Blondhotski?

That's probably true. It's obvious a decade has gone by and the best bet would be some sort of remake.

Checking on IMDB, this is what everyone is doing :

Nathan Fillion (Mal) : Stars in Castle, voice acting in Green Lantern & rumored to play as Drake in the Uncharted movie.
Gina Torres (Zoe) : Mostly TV series and voice acting in VGs. Mostly available.
Alan Tudyk (Wash) : Lots of VG, some TV series and will be in the upcoming Transformers movie. A lot of supporting minor roles. Mostly available.
Morena Baccarin (Inara ... ugh her hair!) : TV series V. Unsure about availability.
Adam Baldwin (Jane) : Supporting role in Chuck, minor support roles in movies. Unsure about availability.
Jewel Straite (Kaylee) : Mostly available, was in Stargate : Atlantis
Sean Maher (Simon) : Minor roles in TV series, mostly available.
Summer Glau (River) : TV series The Cape, supporting roles in movies, hot as ever! Mostly available.
Ron Glass (Book) : VG voice actor, minor TV roles. Mostly available.

Generally, mostly available. But heck, 10 years have gone by. If anything would happen, a remake would be ideal. Or a push in storyline.

From CNN article:

"Even if this project goes nowhere, at least it's something to show the powers-that-be that there's a product there that could be making them some money," he said.
But it's Fox. They're fuckin' stupid.
