[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

He posted once how his own father ripped him a new one about having a buffer. If Dad can't convince him to get his shit together, only a severe beating will.

Artists of the forum, is there enough going with the art in his strip that it should take ten or twelve hours to do?
Strictly in terms of inking and coloring the strip, no (but this does not include taking breaks to play ping-pong with the PA guys). However, the planning stages can take a while, and I get the impression that Kurtz tends to not work out stories/layouts ahead of time. He has made some noise about working on his writing, so maybe it'll get better.

He's made noise about a lot of things - working on a buffer, taking weekends off to concentrate of the week's strips, other projects - but he has no follow-through. He's worse than me golfing.

Today PATV showed Scott moving to the new annex of the Penny Arcade offices, specifically because he says being in the middle of the action and all his best friends is really detrimental to getting anything done. I'm inferring from that statement that he's been falling further behind little by little ever since joining te PA crew in Seattle and is now working to correct it.

Pffft. Only if they also kicked out Robert Khoo and Brian Sunter, their business manager and warehouse manager, respectively.

The story is always changing with that guy. First, it was "working with other artists will really revitalize my creative juices and give me that push to do better", now it's "I'm too distracted." I'm guessing that Khoo, et al, kept telling him to, you know, work on his comic.

you guys just can't process his winning.

also: I don't care what he does with his comic, but yeah the making promises he can't keep thing is annoying.

I just don't see why Kurtz can't get comics done on time.

I wonder how many extra page views he gets by posting the strip late? Depending on how late the strip is I've hit his site four or five times an evening until the strip is up. Not sure how google ads compensates but if it's by page views then he's a genius.
Regarding how long it takes him to produce the strip, he can knock one out fairly quick. He takes it live so you can watch him from start to finish and its just a few hours.
By now nobody really should be complaining about this. Anyone who has followed him for any number of years knows full well that he pushes his stated deadline. I've just come to expect it so it's a non issue for me.

I wonder if the PA crew regret letting him move up there? I can't imagine they enjoy having him around ALL THE TIME.

What? They're friends. What is this.
You've never had a friend that suddenly annoyed the shit out of you once you worked together or lived together? There's a world of difference between hanging out once in a while and seeing him everyday.

In the latest PATV, they were lamenting Scott's move to the annex. They specifically said they spent a lot of time in his office.

So you might have noticed that there was no new strip on Friday and today was also short a new installment of PvP. I wanted to thank all my readers for being understanding around con time. With friends coming into and leaving town, the prep work, the con itself…it’s hard to maintain a normal schedule.
A convention is not a valid excuse for not maintaining a regular release schedule. Aside from the fact that he should have some kind of buffer or guest strips, conventions don't just drop out of the goddamn sky and he should have been able to account for it.

Bah, there is no accounting for tastemakers.

We have a store called Headcase Hats here in Edmonton (the title of the strip was Head Case), and they even have a sign that says something very much like "Hats make statement without saying a word". I think I'll have to show them this strip.

You should take a picture and send it to Scott as well.

The phrase "next to that goddamned hat store" on the flyer is what got me. :D

The strip doesn't make sense. The dood is obviously wearing a hat under his hoodie. Not a fedora or anything like that, but it's a hat!

I thought this strip was actually pretty funny. It might be because I've seen hipsters arguing about it in public. It's apparently like a secret hipster divide that may lead to splitters and civil war.

Wow, that latest strip is a ripoff of the IFC series Portlandia. That character and the "It's over" line are straight out that series.

Would be nice if Kurtz would mention that.

Eh, to be fair part of the fun of obscure references is the fact that they're, well, obscure. Kurtz is just staying true to his new hipster roots :p

I don't know if Kurtz is specifically ripping off Portlandia or not, but they definitely didn't invent the phrase "it's over". Mocking of hipsters is hardly new. :p
