RIFT

Not to be confused with RIFTS, Rift is the soon to be the noob of the MMORPG market. It sports a pretty creative advancement system that allows for an unparalleled amount of character customization. It also sports coded dynamic content in the form of Rifts which open randomly and spew forth enemies as well as invasion forces that attack towns. Makes for a very lively world.

Since there was no post about it I figured I would start one. Check it out here;

A MMORPG of Palladium's RIFTS would be outstanding but it will never happen as the guys who run Palladium know absolutely nothing about the electronic game industry, they've even said as much. The only RIFTS video game they ever authorized was for the NGage. That's right... the NGage. Supposedly the game isn't that bad but the system it was designed for was dead in the water by the time it released and the contract surrendered to many of the rights to allow them to shop the IP out to other companies. There was a brief lawsuit by Palladium books against Trion, the makers of Rift, over the rights to the word RIFTS but it disappeared so I assume Palladium got a check of some sort as the nae of the games went from Rifts of Telara to just Rift.

Too bad too, as Trion seems to have a big budget and it would've bee great to see them take on the IP, but oh well.

I've been saying that forever... just not that eloquently... which is probably why i don't have an awesome job playing videogames and complaining about them like he does...

Critiquing, not complaining. He critiques the games for their flaws.

Which, yeah, is just a more eloquent way of saying he's complaining. :p

So this is not about the super awesome rpg world for one of the most unbalanced yet still fun games ever?

If anyone is interested in trying this out here's a VIP key that will get you into Beta. Just go to the Trion Worlds homepage, sign-up with them and then enter the code. You should receive a Beta invite within a day. There are still probably 24 uses on this key. check it out

I was in the beta. It wasn't for me. The PVP is all crazy flailing furballs (that, incidentally, felt to me like stomping kittens, most of the other players obviously rolled their characters for aesthetics and not for stats), the PVE grind is a little more cinematic but still SSDD, and the hourly scheduled rift incursions are irritating to wait for if you are trying for the gear, and irritating to deal with if you're not.

Coming from a background in DAOC and Warhammer Online, this one is definitely a pass for me. But if PVE's your thing, it might be worth a look. But Warhammer ruined me - I no longer have interest in a game where I can't level up exclusively in PvP, preferably open world.

I am into it. The game is familiar and yet offers something new. I am adding to that by playing a healer, something I haven't done in the past.

I pre-ordered and I am looking forward to the 24th.

Wife just purchased and downloaded last night. Anyone else playing? Any friendly guilds/servers I can send her to?

me and my friends are on Sunrest on Guardian side. Knights who say Ni Hao is the guild. my ingame name is Lyeniel or Flowerwhiskers the gay assassin... because he stabs 'em from behind. knightswhosaynihao.com if you want any more info for you/your wife :)

Still playing, still having a blast. It's enough new to make it engaging while not trying to re-invent the MMoRPG so to speak. I like that there's lots to do as you progress to level cap; quests, rifts, dungeons, invasions, crafting, etc. There are complaints that there isn't enough to do at cap but I think those complaints happen to all new games in this genre and I think once the majority of the populace is at cap there will be plenty to do.

The issue with the cap is that most players will start leaving back to "established" games if the cap is not gripping enough. WoW was smart to have two very difficult raids and a bunch of level 60 dungeons, plus quickly pumping out Blackwing Lair, Dire Maul and ZG to keep the catalog growing. I don't think they would have been as succeessful as they were with the game if not for keeping that carrot moving. People like to have things to strive for.

I gave the game a try, played a few different classes to get a grasp of the innovative talent system they have going. In the end though, it felt TOO familiar. After awhile of playing a Defiant I just stopped for awhile and asked myself "This reminds me of WoW, why am I not just playing WoW?" The other issue was the storyline didn't engage me all that much, didn't really have much humor and the serious elements felt hollow. The main villain also makes me laugh, no idea why, I think its the name. "I would like to order a REGULOS side salad please"

Didn't play past beta. Not enough PvP, and in the PvP I did manage to find, it was like stomping marshmallow peeps with iron-soled boots.

Somehow, there hasn't been a single fantasy MMO that has grabbed my attention long-term since WoW. Tried a bunch, but none of them really grabbed me in the end (though WAR and LOTR came close, for different reasons).

I would like to see more MMOs in the space-exploration genre. EvE is awesome, and I intend to go back eventually, but it's definitely a little heavy on the grind (even though it's "grind" is far more interesting then other games' "grind", IMO). If Star Trek Online hadn't been so slapdash, I might have kept playing it.

Longest I have play any fantasy base MMO is UO :) (7 years baby) WoW? 1.5 years and quit again.

Yeah, the market is screaming for a really good quality Sci-fi MMORPG. I think Bioware could go very far with a Mass Effect MMORPG. I love that universe.

The Old Republic has me mildly excited, but I'm kinda Star-Wars-ed out. Plus, you know everyone is going to be a Force-user, no matter how well-balanced the classes are.

Played UO and WoW equally myself, 6 years each.

Which is why I'm going to enjoy being a Bounty Hunter so much, relying purely on skill.

I have to say, the Coin Lock idea is genius. No Chinese gold spammers whatsoever.
Users will be coin locked if they log in from a significantly different location. When their account is coin locked, they will be sent an email to the address that they have on their account (their login email) with a code to enter into the game.
Users will see the Coin Locked icon in the spot where their tutorial button shows up. Deactivating the tutorial tips will not turn off the Coin Locked button.
While in a Coin Locked status, users will have the following limitations:
• No access to the auction house
• No ability to SEND mail. Users can still receive and view mail as well as remove items from mail
• No ability to SELL to vendors. Users can still purchase items from vendors
• No ability to salvage, runebreak or destroy items
• No ability to trade
• Users can continue to play and gain coin and items, but cannot get rid of them.

It seems like a good counter to hacked accounts as it makes them less viable. Not sure if it would totally snuff out gold farmers though. Unless you are talking about gold spammer e-mails that try to link you to shady sites, then I agree hehe.

Even if it does not stop the actual farmers, it sure is a great idea. Whatever system they are using to do it should be adopted by all MMOs to help protect the accounts. I even have an authenticator on WoW but I would still love this system.
