[Movies] Talk about the last movie you saw 2: Electric Threadaloo

P

Philosopher B.

Henry Kuttner's original story (Mimsy Were the Borogoves) was totes better. Especially when read aloud by William motherfucking Shatner!

Seriously, you need to listen to this:

(The rest of the parts are on the same YouTube account; I listened to it on cassette way back in the day)

Saw Green Lantern yesterday. Awesome, except I would have liked to see more of Kilowog. I liked the character archetype of the "Big Bruiser with a Heart of Gold", and to have his lines delivered by Michael Clarke Duncan... suh-weet!

Also watched Anger Management on telly. Some nice bits, but I'm not that much of an Adam Sandler fan... Gotta love Buddy Rydell's deliciously insane character, though ;)

Priest.

Once again, I find myself in complete agreement with the critics. It's a very well photographed movie. It's pretty. Nicely lit. The sets and music are good. Too bad it's all wasted on a crappy, boring story that feels like it's been done 50 times and 49 of those times were better written. It really is a shame.

Super

*sigh* I wanted to like this. I really did. The reviews all said it was top notch. The acting was pretty good. But it's just...I don't know. It's like the movie didn't know if it was a dark (VERY dark) comedy or a lighter drama/action. And then his "origin story" or whatever the hell that was just (dream/hallucination, I guess)...didn't relate at all with the rest. In fact, the supposed upbeat ending didn't fit with the rest.

I don't know. Maybe, like Grant Morrison, I'm getting tired of the dark, gritty, deconstructed "realistic" superhero. Super followed almost the exact same kind of basic plot as Defendor, which also felt like it had a case of identity crisis. But at least with Defendor, it stuck with the "real" moreso than Super's hallucinations. Super felt like it needed to be edgy, indie, hip, weird, etc. The "heart" at the tail end of it just didn't work for me after all the over-the-top "realistic" violence.

So yeah, I'm...really torn about it.

EDIT: Huh. Took a quick peak at its Rotten Tomatoes page. I honestly thought it had scored higher than that. Guess I should've gone in with lower expectations.

I like to think of reviews this way. That Rotten Tomatoes percentage is about the chance I will like a movie. Sometimes I will hate a 93% but more than likely I will also like it, vice versa with a 10-20% movie.

I thought Defendor was FANTASTIC. That being said, I've yet to see SUPER, but all the reviews in this thread so far have convinced me. I shall be watching it tonight.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

Wow. This may actually qualify as the worst movie I've ever seen. And I've seen tons of B, C, and Z movies. I can't tell what part is worse. Shia's cue-card acting? The forced sexual stuff. Ugh, rather than being attracted to Megan Fox sprawled across the motorcycle, I was actually disgusted by it. Not in some super-moral way...I'm all for a good booty shot. But it was just more---degrading the way the opening shot of her was set up. The pointless humping dogs. The forced swearing, too. Again, no problem with cursing, but it felt like they were shoehorning it in, like a bunch of 7th graders who just realized they can swear. I still find the transformer effects overly complicated and ultimately more confusing that wowing. I can barely identify what's supposed to be the face, and when I do, there's no connection to the face, because it's so unrecognizable. I really can't find much redeeming in this movie. Thankfully I had a free redbox code.

Trollhunter: Just as great as I'd hoped. It took a while to build itself and then was a lot of fun. I even liked the twist everyone else seemed to hate. I thought it was clever all things considered.

Also: "TROOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!!"

Wish there was anywhere REMOTELY I could see it. Anyway...uh...anyone know where I can "legally obtain" a subtitled version?

And of course, after a brief torrent search, the only thing I've seen so far is a dubbed version. UGH.

Damn I've had Trollhunter in my sights but never sat down to watch it since I hate subtitled films. Guess that settles that.
There's a dubbed option.

GAH I want to see that so bad! The trailer really hooked me.

It's out on DVD and Blu-Ray guys. We got it in Netflix mail today. It's for purchase on Amazon for $10 DVD. It's all over the place.

I'd like to SEE it before I buy it to keep. If I were still in Toronto, I would have caught it in theatres.
The DVD price is about the same as a movie ticket :p. But again, it came out on Tuesday. It's rentable. Odds are you're not going to see it in theaters at this point; it's not getting a wide release ever.

My only option, then, would be buying it off Amazon. The only place that MIGHT have it in this tiny goddamn town is Wal-Mart and it's not there. I was there earlier for groceries.

I don't know. Guess I'll just find a torrent somewhere.

Found one. :D And believe me, if I like it (and I very likely will), I'll see about asking for it for Christmas or something. I'm just trying not to own too many movies these days.

Oh I'm there. I feel silly owning all the DVDs I do from years past before Netflix; now I buy maybe one or two movies in a year. This will certainly be one of them; partly because I loved it, and partly because I think these indie guys could use the extra support.

Absolutely agreed. To be perfectly honest, the vast majority of my digital movies are ones I've previously owned. For example, the four pre-Nolan Batman movies. I saw them all in theatre, I bought them all on VHS, then DVD. Ditto for, say, Independence Day, or the Nightmare on Elm St. movies. The studios have gotten my money several times over. I don't need all the bells and whistles and special features. Just gimme the movie.

But yeah, for something like Trollhunter? Hell yes I'll plop money down, if I can.

I just don't have the desire to own any movies. I have a few, but they were mostly gifts. Even before streaming was commonplace, it still seemed easier just to run to Blockbuster than to have a shelf of movies.

When I was in college, it was either buy or don't see. We had some vending thing and a library, but if a movie wasn't in either of those, SOL. I always used to watch movies a lot more frequently and repeatedly since I was drawing a lot or wanted background noise while doing essays or studying. Now that I have a real life and shit to do, I notice that some of these discs haven't been spun in 4 years, and many aren't likely to ever be watched again.

I'd say "damn, I'd have so much more money" except I'd probably have spent it on something else anyway.

A good deal of them are boxless now, moved to a cylinder. They're not taking up space (those would be my wife's, and she'll never part with a single one even if she never watches it again), they just remind me of how dumb I used to be. Maybe there's a point in that.
