Getting Back Into Gaming -- What to play?

Hey all.

I haven't really played any new games in years, and while I've bought big titles with intent to play them, I never did and often opted to just watch. (Titles like Fable 2, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, FFXIII, Left 4 Dead, etc.) I did get Dead Rising 2, but didn't enjoy it nearly as much as 1, and it seems newer games don't catch my interest a whole lot.

I also think I prefer PC gaming--- the last game I think I played was around 2 years ago, and that was Dragon Age.

I just recently finally played Portal 2, and remembered that I absolutely love (PC) gaming and want to get back into it.

I just bought the Half Life pack with intent to play it shortly.

What other games should I look into? I'd like to enjoy the "big ones" that were a huge hit with everyone, but I'll try smaller release games too.

I also just started using Steam, which is convenient, so anything in its library works. :p

If you liked Dragon Age, you might also enjoy the Mass Effect series. It's sci-fi and a more focused experience, which I preferred to Dragon Age.

A huge number of online games have gone free to play, no harm in checking em out... if you haven't tried League of Legends yet, it's the free to play online game du jour.

Other than that, there's way too many decent PC games lately to recommend them all by name.

Go Global Agenda! ;) it is Team Fortress 2 style with levels and skills (pretty fun) all instance game (pve and PvP) are timed so most games don't go over 20 minutes (including raid)

Terraria/Minecraft, Deus Ex, Play your copy of Half-Life, Mass Effect (If you want a long and involving RPG)

If you seriously want to enjoy games, avoid online games (MMOs) such as WoW/Rift/TF2 or anything of that sort. You'll never have time to finish the other linear games on your list if you do.

TF2 is good for a time killer, not so much actually gaming I find personally. Terraria is my game of choice when I have no motivation for anything else atm. Nice and relaxed atmosphere. LoL is my major gaming crunch atm though. Can be really frustrating at times though. (last game went 0/0/14 as a tanky dps for the first 35 mins. Was so hanging for a kill)

Is it bad? I had wanted to play that. :(

Also, impressions on Half Life (1):

Somewhat loose controls, wonky push/pull physics, move too quickly, way more ammo than I'll ever need, and terrible AI following. (Come with me, Security Guard! Oh no! A turret! Stay here while I disable it! Ack! Headcrabs! NO! Security Guard Man, stay back!!

"I'll shoot them! AAAAAGGGH BULLETS IN MY FAAAACE"

WHY DON'T YOU MOVE SECURITY GUARD MAN. WHY DON'T YOU MOVE OUT OF THE BULLETS' WAAAY

"You told me to stay puttttt"

I TOLD YOU TO STAY PUT THE FUCK OVER THERE SECURITY GUARD MAN. WHY WOULD YOU RUN INTO BULLETS TO SHOOT HEAD CRABS

"Because I love you, Mr. Freeman.... Uegghhhh..."

Oh Security Guard Man.... I'll never forget you. I'll avenge you against all those alien ba-- er, well, the turret. I'll avenge you against the turret. *knocks turret over* THAT WAS FOR SECURITY GUARD MAN.)

So yeah I'm havin' a good time.

If you're gonna play Resident Evil 4, PC is the worst way to go. They didn't give it mouse support because the makers thought it'd be "too easy." Then they went and gave it a Wii version (which is the ideal and best version of the game).

No.... mouse support? Wha?
Here's the wonderful way they decided it should work on keyboard.

One button has to be pressed (and held) to put you into targeting mode.
You then move your cursor with your movement keys (WASD)
Yet another button is then used to fire.

And all of these are done with the same hand. Really, one of the worst PC control schemes ever.

I'm going to have to recommend Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mass Effect 1 and 2 as well. Fantastic games...

Dragon Age 2
Jay... I can't even think up a fitting punishment for recommending Dragon Age 2. Maybe Shego can think something up but I'm at a loss...
