Because heartbreak is inspirational for writing in a way that happiness never will be. Not necessarily good writing, but basically if you're happy and content, you don't need to create.

So, this thread is basically trashing this, that, and the other thing?

We get enough of that as it is from fade and Charlie.
Fair enough. I get rolling on things I hate and the next thing I know I wake up with fifty angry posts about the Kardashians.

Okay... things I enjoy: Boardwalk Empire, The Muppets, Broken Social Scene, the movie Visioneers and the Everyday Italian with Giada DeLaurentis

Ken Burns documentaries are always poignant and insightful. I particularly love his Civil War stuff. Also, Community-- six seasons and a movie!

The teacher part of me liked this message as a form of positive reinforcement. Keep it up. :D

Things that I've enjoyed lately:
-The Muppets (obviously; see my awesome avatar)
-Jeff Smith's RASL (want to try a new sci-fi comic? Check it out.)
-Asterios Polyp by Dave Mazzucchelli (won several Eisners a few years ago, along with a lot of raving reviews; I'm halfway through it and can definitely agree)
-Walking Dead
-Mogworld by Yahtzee (pretty fun, though it's not as non-stop hilarious as I expected)

Also, I have to pull the ol' foot out of my mouth. As much as I ragged on The Walking Dead, the last episode really made up for it.

I just have to say, I'm extremely bitter that shows like Glee and Whitney are coasting nicely while Community is trying desperately to hang on.

You don't do art when you're happy and content. Discontent is the driving impulse for creative effort, whether it's personal demons, financial or personal obligations, or the need to express something.

Also ElJuski... you know that thing that happened to you while the Ewok song played? I think this would be a great substitute.

Sorry man, that's utter bullshit that only "dis-content" drives passion. There is no evidence for that, and plenty contrary. It's just as stupid as saying the only people that create art are constipated. Only people that can't poop are forced to create TRUE ART.

B...I hear you, man. I hear you.

Charlie...sorry, that movie was so laborious. "Let's talk about the Smiths!" "Let me tell my problems to my precocious younger sister!" "DANCE NUMBERRRR"

I'm not going to defend the younger sister or the faux-mentary piece OR the random French movie thing, BUT I wanna hear you say the "Expectations vs. Reality" scene was trash

I know, and actually, I believe a recent AVClub piece was really gunning for that scene too. Honestly I haven't seen the movie since so I can't really say. But I do know people are talking about it as an Awesome Thing.

nah, man. Actually, my relationship with the AV Club has been tense of late, since I really don't like their fresh crop of TV people.

not to mention they already watch things I would never watch, like The Amazing Race and Star Trek

uh, no.
I know plenty of people that paint as simply a form of relaxation - just like listening to music or going on a bike ride. You most certainly can be happy and content and 'do' art. I'd argue that creating for the sake of creating is probably the most noble and pure form of art.

But I digress. You are, after all, a sad panda.

AHEM.

I just have to point out that Tiny Tim had severe OCD, taking a dozen showers per day and was terrified of women.
So...yeh. He was a little fucked up.

Also, I'm not agreeing with Null but I will say that the best art comes from longing or some sort of discontent. Even painting for relaxation implies that there is stress to begin with...so that's a form of discontent.
However, I'm sure there are plenty of happy people out there that create art, I've met them! I find that their art lacks any...meaning though. "Hey! I painted these flowers and pretty birds in a tree because they look nice together and stuff lol."
Art doesn't have to have deep meaning...but don't expect to engage a person with out something behind it.

I've actually slipped past the whole Adele thing, from back in last album when all the hipsters and Rolling Stone were slobberin' her knob, to now when every half-assed college girl is all slobberin' her knob.
I don't know any Adele songs yet. Something about her troubles me. It's that I never hear much about how talented she is. It's always one of my female friends talking about how amazing it is that a women who looks like her is famous. If the most memorable thing about her is that she managed to get famous without slipping into a size 0...

That's not the REAL reason I haven't checked her out, actually. I just think it's weird that the one thing people I know are stressing is, "She's famous AND has meat on her bones?! Golly!" sounding as amazed as if they were watching a quadriplegic stand up and tap dance. Maybe I'll head over to youtube so I can finally see what the fuss is about.

I love the bluesy quality of her voice in that song. I'm generally tepid about her otherwise... I was impressed at first but I only enjoy a handful of songs. That said, the ones I enjoy I really think are amazing.

I judge a singer 100% soley on the uniqueness of voice. I don't care about the lyrics they write, the music they have playing in the backround or what they're like in life. 100% solely on the uniqueness of voice. There are few who register for me as "greats".

Louis Armstrong, Sinatra, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, 50 Cent (Yeah I'm serious), Loreena McKinnet, Adele, and a few others that are currently escaping me offhand.

'60s glasses. Fedora. Pretentiously good headphones. Steely Dan mocking the world on the iPhone.

Sigh. I'm a hipster. But it's also going on 1am in an empty hotel lobby. How can I be a hipster if there's no one else to be a hipster at?

I like some of Adele's songs. "Someone like you" is lovely.

Edit: I hadn't heard of her until I saw her on Graham Norton a few months ago.

Tom Waits? Is it Tom Waits?!
...I freaking love Tom Waits. ^_^

I judge my singers based on bust size and what they eat for dinner. I couldn't care less if a Singer can actually sing.
I judge them based on whether or not I'd like to have a beer with them. Just like politicians.

I love Rolling in the Deep it has survived after lots of plays on the radio, on my computer, on my ipod, and my tone deaf coworker singing it.. it is a good song.

I'd like to have a beer with them. Just like politicians.
I judge my politicians by how much smarter they are than I am. I don't want a guy just like me leading my country. I suck. I want a guy who's smart, who's read books, who's surrounded by other smart people and who's smart enough to listen to them.

Also, you can't judge my pop culture, I have none!

So that's how i can make bitches not get pissed off when i call them 'hoes to their face...

....

BTW, what do you think of this guy, I wouldn't call him a good singer, but he does have a unique voice:
