Spoiler Alert:

You're wrong.

Did you really think we weren't paying attention? I mean, honestly? We've sat idly by as you created a thread about My Little Pony. We ignored your post about the finale of Breaking Bad being 'the best thing on television'. We even assumed you were kidding when you posted all that nonsense about Skyrim.

But no longer. Our opinions... nay, facts... reign supreme. Now, just relax as ElJuski and I educate you on what really matters.

Firefly is only overrated in the sense that you have to hear EVERYONE talk about how great it is. I'd put it in the same category as Freaks and Geeks. Great show, ruined by people always talking about how great it is. If you want a great one-season show? Clone High.

Freaks and Geeks is fantastic, but I can understand why someone would have to step away from the internet and or a college to really appreciate it for what it is. Firefly has a handful of good episodes--and that fantastic "Out of Gas" episode, which is like, possibly one of my life favorites--but really so much of it just slags. And all that fake space-swearing garbage is so lame. But that's probably because I haven't stepped away from the internet for a quick minute.

Also, having my finger on the pulse of the hipster community, I can tell you that they're not all about Adele. It's mainly all those girls we've hated in high school signing along with a girl they probably used to pick on in high school. We get it. uh, no.
I know plenty of people that paint as simply a form of relaxation - just like listening to music or going on a bike ride. You most certainly can be happy and content and 'do' art. I'd argue that creating for the sake of creating is probably the most noble and pure form of art.

But I digress. You are, after all, a sad panda.

Also ElJuski... you know that thing that happened to you while the Ewok song played? I think this would be a great substitute.
I just have to point out that Tiny Tim had severe OCD, taking a dozen showers per day and was terrified of women.
So...yeh. He was a little fucked up.
Added at: 04:40
Also, I'm not agreeing with Null but I will say that the best art comes from longing or some sort of discontent. Even painting for relaxation implies that there is stress to begin with...so that's a form of discontent.
However, I'm sure there are plenty of happy people out there that create art, I've met them! I find that their art lacks any...meaning though. "Hey! I painted these flowers and pretty birds in a tree because they look nice together and stuff lol."
Art doesn't have to have deep meaning...but don't expect to engage a person with out something behind it.

I don't know any Adele songs yet. Something about her troubles me. It's that I never hear much about how talented she is. It's always one of my female friends talking about how amazing it is that a women who looks like her is famous. If the most memorable thing about her is that she managed to get famous without slipping into a size 0...

That's not the REAL reason I haven't checked her out, actually. I just think it's weird that the one thing people I know are stressing is, "She's famous AND has meat on her bones?! Golly!" sounding as amazed as if they were watching a quadriplegic stand up and tap dance. Maybe I'll head over to youtube so I can finally see what the fuss is about.

I judge a singer 100% soley on the uniqueness of voice. I don't care about the lyrics they write, the music they have playing in the backround or what they're like in life. 100% solely on the uniqueness of voice. There are few who register for me as "greats".

If you must know, I always considered the last seasons of Battlestar Galactica to be wholly pretentious bullcrap trying to say something deep and meaningful and existentialist. I mean, what the fuck was with Starbuck angel or the song that just so happens to have the coordinates for a planet that just so happens to be suitable for the Colonists after the battlestar was basically reduced to pieces of ablative shielding held together by chewing gum?

There comes a point where a show's characters can't develop any more and become stagnant. Then the writers come up with craaaazier methods of keeping people interested. Happened to Michael Scott. Happened to Starbuck. Happened to Liz Lemon. Is currently happening to Phil Dunphy.

I did dig that show, but that new theme song was hard to get by. I mean, the old one wasn't great, but it didn't cause me to wish I was born deaf.
Don't you dare ever besmirch the original Dandy Warhol's version of the Veronica Mars themesong.

I think Citizen Kane is a good movie solely from the perspective of watching how cinema developed. Without any context it is pretty boring by today's standards and the mystery that drives the movie is either 1 already known before the person watches it or 2 not interesting enough to keep someone intellectually involved in the story.

I want to get the Criterion version of Godzilla (thought they would call it Gojira like the previous dvd releases, so as not to be confused by the version with Steve Martin, but it turns out that's on there too!).

Honestly, I've heard that excuse and if you ask me that's pretty bull. There are plenty of movies made around that time that despite being well permeated in pop culture are still excellent films to see for the first time and to hold audience attention. Casablanca springs to my head, as it's also in the conversations of greatest movie ever.
Being first or revolutionary doesn't automatically make something good. It makes it first and revolutionary.

That a movie needs context to be good. It one of my annoyances in media, along side with you have to watch over half a season before you can say you like a tv show.

That's fine. I understand believe me. But to be clear when I mean context I don't mean the time period I mean it's place in cinematic history. #160

Null

I thought it was weird how different the character was between shows. Cheers Frasier would probably beat up Frasier Frasier.
I actually felt that was fairly justified - a lot of a person's behavior is determined by their situation in life. In Boston, Dr. Frasier Crane was married to a cold but beautiful colleague, had a rather successful practice, and spent most of his free time in a working class bar drinking generic beer, rubbing elbows with people he could look down on in a friendly manner.

In Seattle, he was a radio talk show host, divorced, living with his dad and having his even less manly brother as his closest companion. He spent time at a cozy little cafe drinking gourmet coffee from demitasse, often alone.

Cheers Frasier was successful, more than most of the people around him. In Frasier, he wasn't - he wasn't doing poorly by any means, but most of his social circle was comparable to him. Aside from the fact that he was a divorced dad who rarely got to see his kid, well, I'm guessing that effected him and he dealt with it by becoming more introverted and elitist.

Seasons 3-8 are the golden years. For the more family-driven, sentiment earning episodes, go early. For the more broad, yet more poignant satire and belly-laughs, go later. Personally, my favorite seasons are 7 and 8, and my favorite episodes are:

  • "Homer At the Bat"
  • "Homerpalooza"
  • "The Summer of 4 Ft. 2"
  • Krusty Gets Kancelled"
  • Lisa the Iconoclast"
  • "A Millhouse Divided"
  • "Homer's Phobia"
And probably a thousand more which I can't remember off the top of my head. But yeah, 3-8. Worth the work.

#231

BananaHands

BananaHands

I like the Simpsons, but I don't like to consider an episodic format show in my "Top __" lists. I'm with Shego on the idea that a show needs a resolution... I mean, the way Simpsons was written, it's no surprise that it's suffering now. The writers got bored and moved to different shows with more continuity. Futurama, News Radio, Mission Hill (fuckin' love that show) or moved on to hosting a late night talk show (have to have Conan love).

Still, it's cool to see where the writers went. Most of them left the show around season 7 (or whenever Futurama started... maybe that was 8?) and come back to write the occasional episode or came back to write the movie.

Mike Mendel
Colin ABV Lewis
Jeff Goldstein
Al Jean
Conan O'Brien
Bill Oakley
Josh Weinstein
Mike Reiss
Ken Tsumara
George Meyer
John Swartzwelder
Jon Vitti
CJ Gibson
David M. Stern
Dee Capelli
Lona Williams

Right. My favorite movies are, by no means, the BEST movies. Although probably top for their respective genres.

I'm just grateful that there is some diversity on these lists. I was really worried it was going to be a bunch of sci-fi and fantasy. BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS PEOPLE

I like gritty movies, honorable mention: True Grit, the new one. The old one's ok, but has too much happy horse riding.

I also think it's very telling that at least one Coen Bros' movie usually makes everyone's list.

#250

Tress

Ghostbusters, Saving Private Ryan, Ocean's Eleven, Night of the Living Dead (either version), and Fools Rush In (for nostalgia reasons).

My favorite trilogy would be the Bourne films.

Really, I could go on and on with this list. I loves me some movies.

It's hard to judge when I approve of all of these. Especially The Iron Giant. Fantastic movie.

Also, Saving Private Ryan and Children of Men are incredibly well shot. Both movies with a long sequence done all in one take.

By the by, are you pairing those Grados' with a portable amp? If you care that much about sound, it might be worth looking into. I've heard some good things about this one, and it won't break the bank.
Done and done. Just pulled the trigger on the amp and the LOD cable. All for under $50. :D

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. Back on the hit list with you. That's like comparing a martial artist with a guy who just runs bodily into you, going "Booga booga booga booga" with arms flailing everywhere. Or comparing a sniper rifle with a nuclear bomb.

Headphone chatter started here, so here it stays...

So who is to blame? Patrick Norton for suggesting the Grados and head-fi.org? Drifter, for turning me on to the FiiO amp? All I know is my ears are happy, but my wallet has been sobbing in the corner for the last two months.

As I go for higher and higher end cans, I've been made aware of this little gem of an amp. Should drive nearly anything my budget can throw at it, including the AKG Q701s which are next on my wish list. I have zero soldering skills, so I ordered it preassembled and cased. 150 bucks, but compares favorably to amps costing up to 6x as much.

Let's hear what TV shows you're excited to get back on the air so I can judge you accordingly.

Personally: Community (eventually), The Walking Dead (Now that they straightened the girl thing out, I'm hoping they move right on to the prison so we can get that ark), Mad Men and WHENEVER THE HELL VENTURE BROTHERS AIRS AGAIN. Seriously. They were cleared for a feature-length episode this next season. It's going to be great.

Don't think it's on Netflix, but it's worth checking. There's...four and a half seasons, I think? I'll be the first to admit it's not the greatest show of all time. It's formulaic and hokey, but there's just something about that I love. Likely because it's nerdy as all heck. Plus, they take the idea of jumping the shark and basically make it a part of the show. Kind of like how Community does it.
