That's a rough line of work. The disability benefits (free room, board, and healthcare) don't seem too bad though...

Regarding the mugger "Records show he has several convictions, including at least one for a residential burglary."

So this wasn't a part time gig for him, this was a career, and only the latest in a long string of criminal activity.

In other words, his life was already "gone" several times in the past.

The two guys who pulled gun on me several years ago got less than 2 years each.

If anything, getting beat up was probably more of a wake up call for the guy than the "justice" system.

Don't lament the squandering of his young life - life is cheap and self perpetuating. He's 24, he's long past the point where detention and a trip to "scared straight" is a viable option. He's a man, and a career criminal. A career violent criminal. A lowlife thug. There's thousands more waiting to fill his niche.

Seriously, though, that guy is lucky to be alive. Fighting skills are one thing, but he shouldn't have taken on a guy with a gun. The clumsiest goon can still pull a trigger.

My favorite variant is the description for the death of terrorists in the field. "We wanted to capture him, but while fleeing, he fell down some stairs. Onto some bullets."

I think the only reason he did do anything was because he saw the gun jam up and the bullet fall out of the chamber.

I agree with Mathias. The guy had already handed over the $30 he had when the mugger racked the pistol and demanded that he exit the car he was in. He even said that he felt like he was going to take a bullet so he might as well do something.

Also, this quote:

This guy could very likely be ex-special forces of somesort. Not the sort of person you want to be shoving a pistol against their chest.

He could also be some random idiot who watches UFC and plays MW3 too much. We really don't know either way. But hey, I missed the part about the guy feeling like he was going to be shot anyway. He may as well take a swing if he's pretty sure he has nothing to lose. I'm glad it worked out for him.

The guy said "Sometimes I do clubs, sometimes I do close protection." That means he works as security, including bodyguard work, which means he is probably trained for dealing with armed assailants. It was a risk but not an inappropriate one.
