Games on SALE!

Hmm, sounds like the Steam sale has got kinks it needs to work out.

Good thing none of the first day sales draw my interest, though

That Swords and Soldiers achievement is bullshit. Online matches are nonstop zerg rushes, and it's hard to use that stupid spell twice. Using it five times is nigh impossible.

Man, I hate how lousy my current laptop (Dell) is at playing games. It's mostly the issue with the in-house video card that's good, but not recognized by just about every game. Not even Half-Life 2 or a lot of the newer Telltale games run smoothly. :( Which means a lot of these sales, I'd totally take advantage of...if my computer could even run them. I bought Orcs Must Die and someone gifted me a copy of Left 4 Dead, and I can't play either.

The nice thing about Steam is you'll always have the game available to you and will never lose it so long as you don't have your account hacked. I've bought games on sale that my old computer couldn't run (got Mass Effect for 2 bucks a couple years ago) with the intent of playing them next time I upgraded.

...actually I still haven't gotten around to playing more than half an hour of Mass Effect >.>

Some of those achievements are ridiculously hard.
No kidding. I barely got anywhere on the Revenge of the Titans achievement. I assumed the purpose of these achievements was to get people to play games they might not have otherwise. Setting an achievement that requires advanced knowledge of the game kind of defeats that.

I'm consulting a walk-through for the RotT achievement, see if some strategy will help me win, but that'll have to wait for later.

Steam Holiday Sale - Day 11
Achievements
- Steam - Link your Facebook account - Make sure your highschool sweetheart(s), dogsitter, and second cousin twice-removed know you love fragging, ganking, and wearing silly hats. Click here.
- The Binding of Isaac - A Gift From Krampus - Find Krampus in Satans room for a gift!
- Xotic - Brain Freeze - Found and destroyed a blue Crystal Orb Brain
- Total War: SHOGUN 2 - Requiem of the Dead - Win a defensive siege battle with your daimyo during any winter turn.
- Men of War: Assault Squad - Crazy Scientist from the northern Arctic Cycle - Complete the bonus mission!
- Left 4 Dead 2 - Valve Gift Grab 2011 – L4D2 - Collect three gifts dropped by Special Infected in Versus Mode.

I hear that The Binding of Isaac achievement is very unfair because it's totally random if you even get a chance to fight the Krampus. Which has led me to download the game. I got it as part of a bundle, and didn't have any intention of playing, but this may be the only chance I get for three achievements in a single day, and I want to see just how bad it is to find a Krampus.
Edit: Took me a little over a half-hour, and that was with finding the Krampus in the first devil room I came across, and having enough power-ups to be able to survive the fight. Then the achievement didn't unlock because the developer's code is buggy. There is a fix that works retroactively. Still, I do not like this game, it's all that I hate about a rogue-like combined with some of what I hate about early Zelda games, all wrapped up in ugly symbolism.

Any relevant or helpful thougths on the game? :p
I've only played a very little, and I found the graphics to be a little over-stylized. It was hard to tell what units were what. They all look kind of similar.

Other than that, it seemed like a pretty decent tower defense game.

Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac? You boys got some fucking explainin' to do.

The marketing folks at Valve are some sort of mad geniouses. This whole campaign is beyond brilliant. By tying the achievements to the lesser played titles, they are making money hand over fist even with the discounts.

The marketing folks at Valve are some sort of mad geniouses. This whole campaign is beyond brilliant. By tying the achievements to the lesser played titles, they are making money hand over fist even with the discounts.
And they also introduce users to the various features of Steam (Facebook integration, recommendations, inventory, trading, screenshots, wishlists, and it's rumored tomorrow's achievement might be to turn on Steam Guard.) Speaking of wishlists, getting people to put 10 games on their list also broadcasts those games to their friends who then see more games to want in the future. There are so many layers to this, and Valve keeps adding little twists and tweaks with each major event. It's really quite an impressive way to get people to not only buy games, but also invest themselves in the system and become familiar with what Steam does besides just sell games.

Except a lot of these games are indie titles, developed by companies that have very strong relationships with Valve. It's why Killing Floor and Super Meat Boy were in the Summer Scavenger Hunt, as well as the Great Gift Pile, and why The Binding of Isaac (from the makers of SMB) was on the list despite being from a company that already has a title in the achievement list. Valve's not promoting lesser played titles, they are cultivating sales for the indie community they constantly snipe talent from.

Or both.

A positive way of looking at it is promoting people who are loyal to Valve and Steam. It's basically saying "If you make a game and promote it on Steam, you can be sure we'll do everything we can to help people see and play that game."

It's funny, when I think about how they're integrating all these features into their sales, as the Figster pointed out. It honestly feels similar to how they make their games: integrating the learning portion of a new item/weapon/concept into the gameplay itself, rather than just telling you what buttons to push or having some idiot in your ear telling you what to do.
