Minor victory thread

Just went up on stage at an open mic night for the 2nd might this week! It went really well tonight and I feel pumped about it. Also got some info on two other places that have open mics throughout the week. It was worth being 34th out of 36 and waiting three hours!

I feel bad for the infinite number of Phil's that went up and sucked trough the multiverse.

Response:
Wow! Adam, thank you for your enthusiasm putting this together for us so quickly.

Just wanted to give you a quick update and let you know our team hasn't had a chance to fully review yet today.

From what I've seen I'm confident what you have provided is enough for us to review. We'll get back to you by Tuesday next week.

Thanks so much again for your quick response and have a great weekend!

Bad stuff happening with keeping up with the bills and I had to put some stuff on Ebay. My wife started getting upset when I packed up the Wii, so I told her if we get enough from what's already up there, we can keep it and the games.

Four days to go and we're already halfway there for current bids. Over 20 people have my Warhammer 40k orks lot on their watch lists, so I'm crossing my fingers for a nice big bid fight going on the last evening. So far, so good.

Two minor victories:
1) I have officially lost so much weight/inches off my waist that the pair of jeans that used to be my only comfortable (i.e. biggest) pair, are now so loose that no amount of cinching down the belt will keep them from sliding down any time I stand up.
2) Finally got a letter from the City of Redmond Prosecuting Attorney last night about my DWLS arrest from earlier this month, and due to my good driving record and the fact that I took care of the outstanding late fee, license reinstatement, and car impound the same day - they've decided not to press charges.

Some of you may know that I'm building a replacement computer (though at a glacial pace). Now some of the components I want are finally being discontinued (we're talking pretty much all supplies have dried up over the last 3 months) so I'm using some of our tax money to get the crucial parts (CPU/MLB) now while there are still a few left on the market.

Found a guy selling a few of the CPU model I want NIB but marked up $50 more than they were selling for in Oct ($220 now, formerly $170). Also, he lives an hour away so I drive out to try and make sure I get the pick of the litter (even though gas is expensive). I'm not exactly happy about the markup + trip, but I know I'm not going to get this kind of chance again so I go and do it. Mission accomplished. I now have a Phenom II X6 1090T BE.

When I get back home and check the mail, I find that the mortgage company has discovered they didn't know how shitty our house really is, so they sent a refund check for the unexpectedly lower taxes...to the tune of about $350.

Also, one of my buddies at work decides to pick that day to repay $100 that he owes me.

So now I'm not feeling so bad about that trip.

My wife has (yet) an(other) interview for (yet) an(other) NP position on Monday. It's getting to the point where she's even cynical going into the interview, though, so I just hope she can be excited for the opportunity.

Nurse Practitioner yes. A large part of the problem the past 8 months has been that Medicare decided last summer that they were only going to pay out 67% of care when seen by an NP instead of a doctor. So doctors have been advertising NP positions, offering her jobs, then the administration at the facility will become aware of the potential for fewer Medicare $ coming in for hiring an NP, and nix the position entirely.

I have no idea how to code things, the vast majority of my site as is was done with a massive amount of help from my old roommate.
Anyway, I decided to add my current job to my resume on my website, and retroactively add the group film I worked on in third year as well (Don't know why I hadn't before), since I just recently submitted it to two festivals. And although it took like 200 tries, I did manage to finally get it done on my own.

I love John Pinette. I had his CD with me when I flew to Saskatchewan and I must have looked TERRIFYING to everyone else on the plane cause I was just red faced and shaking with silent laughter the whole time.

I finally went out and joined a gym. I have been meaning to join one for awhile now so I finally bit the bullet and joined. I worked out for an hour tonight and feel pretty good. Now I just need to keep going but I am looking forward to it.

Sun Day will be playing ast the Ascona Film and Art Festival in Switzerland on Fri Feb 24! Its played in Australia and in the UK already, but this is the first time its been in significantly sized film festival.
Inexplicably, Pistol Shrimp will be playing at the same festival on Saturday the 25! First time its been played in a public space since the school screened it for the students' families.

I don't know if this goes in here or the rant thread or what.
My mom got me new jeans at Christmas and I couldn't fit into them. It didn't surprise me, as I knew I had gained some weight over winter. I just ASSUMED she had bought me my size. I fit into them now, but on closer inspection I realized they are in fact 2 inches up from what is usually my size. So I've lost two inches off the waist, but am still roughly two inches bigger than I consider normal. Curses.

Got my tax refund (sadly, right after my wife's birthday and Valentine's day, but whatevs), now I'm $3500.00 richer. Gonna go a long way to finally pulling us out of our short-term debt.

I need to file my taxes this week. I love getting my return

(in before "blah blah no interest free loans to the government for me!""it's your OWN money blah blah blah")

My coffee shop/bakery just got named one of the top college coffee shops in the country by bestcollegesonline.com blog.

Feels pretty good. :)

Yeah, this is a big return year for us. I was worried because my petro salary booted me up into the next tax bracket, and because I was exempt from some taxes as a state-employed teacher before. But it worked out nicely.

I spent over 16 hours yesterday trying to figure out why my code wasn't working. I finally got it working at 4am this morning, figuring out and fixing the two big obstacles that I could find only by single-stepping through the assembly code directly on the processor.

Yay me.
Everything about that statement made me cringe, except the part where you were able to get it to work. I hate debugging code, especially when I can't for the life of me figure out where I may have gone wrong, and I hate having to step through trying to find the point where it breaks, but thankfully I've never had to step through the assembly code on the processor. Though, that does sound like an incredibly useful resource to have at your disposal, should everything else fail.

One of these days I'd love to be able to just take a month off of work, find a decent compiler and some programming books, and throw myself off the edge of the pool into the deep end of programming. So far all I've had experience with are shitty languages (read MS Visual Studio languages) that I consider more to be gateway drugs than actual worthwhile languages. In fact, one of my friends is frequently called upon in his job to interview prospective programmers and if they list the languages I have experience in, without any other, more legit languages, they don't even get a call back. But I loved my class on C in college and I love what I've seen so far of C++, and the bit of off-the-cuff Jscript writing I had to do for a previous job, and I'd love to delve deeper. I miss command line and shell programming - visual feels too much like a bad website designer.

Yeah, hard to justify taking time off work when you don't have any other way to pay the bills. Actually, I really wish that I at least get some programming oriented reading done during my copious free time at work - I'm sure neither my consulting firm nor my onsite managers would mind; but while just reading programming books and theory is good and all, it doesn't hold a candle to practical application.

There are actually quite a few good programming lessons free online. Especially if you have experience with some programming. Like you said though, your best bet is to do it. Find a problem and solve it. Language choice doesn't particularly matter. They all have pros and cons, but the basic mindset is the same. Once you think like a programmer, it's fairly easy to shift into the paradigm of a scripted language like Python or Perl, or a object-oriented language like C++, or a procedural language like Fortran. If you want a suggestion, I'd say C, maybe Python. My preferred language is C++, but I think C is probably a better starting point, because it's close to the hardware, and forces you to learn to be careful.

As far as debugging goes, if you want to be a programmer, you'll need to learn to love it. They say writing a program is 10% coding and 90% debugging what you just wrote.

Also, learn about libraries early. No need to reinvent the wheel. I wish they had been so easy to find when I first started programming in the 80s.

To celebrate getting to 60 followers on my 40k blog, I decided to start a contest on Friday where I would give away my scratch built chaos titan next Friday in a random drawing. It is now Sunday and I have gained 12 followers since then and views of the blog have skyrocketed.

The best part is the amount of interest the other posts on the blog have gained since starting the contest. I am quite pleased!
