How else would they market it to the masses? I mean, seriously, Robert Downey Jr. was pretty much the draw for me to see Iron Man, and Iron Man paved the way for me learning more about the rest of the Avengers.

Unlikely. Looks like it was done in house by Marvel Studios probably by an internal team putting together components from various pre-existing collateral. I'd say it probably cost about $30,000-$50,000 between marketing and graphic design teams. Probably cost more to advertise that there was a new poster than to actually make the poster.
