[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

They sure do Frankie. They sure do.

(for the record I don't think Kurtz modeled this guy after Jack Kelly anymore than I think the Magic Boss Lady was modeled after some old movie actress. I just noticed a similarity.)

So, I was doing an archive binge this evening to try to figure out who Francis might be calling, and I ran across a time when Kurtz actually did blatantly respond to us in a strip. Anyone remember this one?

A broken image was a nod to us?

EDIT: Ah, there we go. Fixed. Yeah, I remember how many of us criticized him for ending the arc in such a horrible way.

Oh, wow. Going back through these comics I'm remembering the weirdest random things. Like how we corrected a typo on this comic (you can still see how the "a" in "affect" looks a little off), but there were people on the forum who were arguing that Kurtz really did mean to use the obscure verb form of "effect."

Man, the Halfpixel days were weird.

Huh, You guys remember when Kurtz did an arc that was making fun of CAD's Wintereenmas, but people were showing up in the forums who didn't get the joke and said that Kurtz was totally ripping Buckley off?

We had Kurtz' back back then.

Were we around when this one came out? I can't remember when the Halfpixel forums were set up. This was in May 2005.

To use "effect" as a verb there would imply Brent was the cause of all those regional sales, not just the purchases he himself made. So the correction was valid.

Looking at Thursday's strip, does anyone feel that Cole's parting line would be Scott's one day? "PVP is your problem now. See ya around."

I can't remember what it was specifically, but remember when there was a date that a character predicted way back? Francis getting laid, I think. And as the date got closer and closer, there was a growing deluge of new posts from people posting about it like it was some amazing find?

Goddammit...

Am I the only one here who has trouble with the archives? Starting from late 2006 there seems to be more and more times when the pages for individual comics are broken, with nothing more than blank whiteness, a Lolbat picture and links to "Next Comic" and "Previous Comic". Even some of the month pages are broken.

I really like today's dig at Starbucks.
Meh, heard one Starbucks slam ya heard em all.

And yeah, the paint-ball story-line DID suck. I can't even remember the ending because that is how un-rememberable it was.

Next topic, was the breaking up of Francis and Marcy a shameless throw-back to Brent and Jade's "break-up" over Everquest?

More the point, why the fuck is Kurtz acting like that character is a real person, asking him to post a survey in his blog?
A.) He is trying to be silly.
B.) The pressure of helping pioneer the web-comics genre making him an internet celebrity has made him gone insane and can't tell reality from fiction any-more.

I am going with B.

No, it's from some angry letter he wrote to a con when they misspelled his name in their invitation to him.
Wait, really?! I mean, I always knew that Kurtz had an over-inflated opinion of himself, but he wrote an angry letter to a con over a misspelled name, which may very well have just been a typo, in an invitation? What a fucking blowhard.

I'm pretty sure they called him Steve Kuntz, so thats an unlikely typo.
Yeah, it's fairly difficult to hit 'n' instead of 'r' by mistake. Still, Kuntz (pronounced Koontz) isn't an entirely unheard of name; it could have been an auto-correction, if someone had added Kuntz to their Word dictionary, or it could have been something less innocent, like when a company prefills letter templates with offensive and/or random terms with the full intention of filling in the real data later. I seem to recall a utility company sending letters to all of their customers that started "Dear whiny customer" or some such.

Wait... I was always under the impression that letter was a joke. Like... fake outrage. Was he legitimately angry? Oh man, that's sad.
There was one part that didn't have to do with himself. I can't remember the cartoonist's name, but he was a friend of Scott's and he died a few months before this email situation. The con in question had snubbed that cartoonist in some respect in the past, I can't remember in what way, and that was what one of Scott's paragraphs of the email was about, that he wouldn't attend the con that did that regardless of getting his name right, paying to fly him out, etc.

Now, I love Kurtz. The man is a huge inspiration to me and many others. But man oh MAN does he need to take the dick out his ass. He is making Tim Buckley look more modest. BUCKLEY! Just becasue he helped make a genre doesn't mean that he is the greatest damn thing in the world.
