On one hand, I love seeing peoples work, on the other, it's potentially damaging their future careers.

One of those people has a contract with a studio to adapt their short, and part of that contract states that they cannot post the short online, so yeah, they aren't happy with that.

Trust me, I understand. I went to school for this stuff.
But nobody's posting my films. :foreveralone:

Seriously though, its a double edged thing. You want to have your stuff out there to generate buzz and help you get jobs, but once its out in an online format, its too easy for stuff like this to happen, and then its actually HURTING your ability to get jobs.

My research assistant just interviewed for a training advisor job. Knocked it out of the park. The hiring manager came over to ask me a couple questions and told me how impressed she was with her. We've been a team for well on 7 years now, breaks my heart to let her go. But it means a decent jump in pay and no longer being 'an assistant'.

If she leaves, an old friend of mine wants to apply for her job. I don't know if I could have a friend working for me. That would be totally awkward.

See, I knew sex tied in somehow! Still, I've never had difficulty keeping my social and work life separate, even if I was working with someone I was friends with. I make it clear that work is work and social is social.

Well, the other side of it is, we owned a company together about 12 years or so ago. It got bought out during the dot.com boom and we ended up working at the big company, she was essentially my 'boss', for lack of a better term. I ended up leaving about 7 years ago, she came over to the same company eventually. Now I'd be her boss. That's kinda awkward.

NJtransit. Anyone who lives in New Jersey knows what a distrusting bitch it can be. The schedule makes no sense either. 2:30, 3:45, 5:45. This is just an example but it gets just as crazy. Also, if you get there after mid-night...there are no trains. BULL-SHIT! Some people have places to go! I freakin' hate NJtransit, that's all.

I think if anything, you'd understand how you both work in a professional sense and it'd streamline a lot of things.

So this morning my landlord informed me they will be doing construction in my bathroom for 2 weeks and I cant live there until it's done. When I expressed my dissatisfaction he suggested that maybe I could just move to a new place. I'm going to have to go to a hotel for 2 weeks which is going to cost me at least a month's worth of rent. This is bullshit.

Does you lease cover anything like this? It seems like it's breaching that contract somehow.

I'm pretty sure it would cost him more to fight it than the hotel would cost him. However, this is probably a move by him to charge Terrik more for rent... or to sell the building.

Well since the rented location was not provided for the allotted pay period, that rent better be prorated down by at least the time unavailable, if not more for the trouble it caused. Also, how much prior warning were you given? As in, how long do you have until this debacle begins?

The story goes like this. A new building is going up directly next to my apartment building. Apparently that means doing work on my apartment building too. Landlord claims all bathrooms in my building needs to be worked on. On Monday he came by saying on Thursday, some people would come by to install a new toilet. He didn't mention this was part of the construction project nor did he mention how long it would take.

Today I came to work and got a call from my girlfriend saying my landlord and a few construction workers are in my house tearing the entire bathroom apart. This is when my landlord 'discovered' it would take two weeks (I call bullshit) and told my girlfriend, since she was already there, he had better things to do and she could watch over the construction workers. Nice.

Later, he told my girlfriend that after the bathroom was completed he was going to consider raising the rent and if I didn't like it, I could find a new place. Well after a feat of diplomacy, zz go the landlord to allow me to not not pay rent for 2 weeks and he wont raise the rent until next Feb. So...yay? Basically it changed nothing about the situation and they already started working. I was under the impression this was a toilet swap because that's exactly what he said on Monday but boy, was I wrong.

Well, he's under a legal obligation to recompense the time he's disallowing access to the apartment you've rented AND to give at least a 30 day (I think) notice on change in rent dependent upon the conditions of your lease (most have a fixed pay rate for the duration). When is your lease up? Before Feb, I'm assuming.

For a few months now, my dog has been really slow to move around. He has almost no energy and rarely gets excited about anything. He doesn't even like to eat anymore. I've had him to a couple different vets, and they've done every test they can do. Apparently they can't find anything wrong with him, and he's as healthy as a nine year old dog can be. The only thing left they could do is bring him to a specialist three hours away and get some brain scans done. Only problem is it'll cost at least $1500 for just the scan and they're pretty sure even if they find out what it is, there's nothing they'll be able to do to help him. They figure it's most likely a brain tumor.

It's hard watching him go through this. He went from being incredibly energetic to me having to stand him up and force him to go outside so he can go to the bathroom. We used to have to watch little kids around him because he would swing his tail so hard he'd knock them over. He doesn't even wag his tail anymore. He has days when it's better, and he'll get outside and at least wander around. For the most part he just sleeps or stares into space.

I know he doesn't have much time left, but I'm not ready to let him go. If it comes to it, I don't think I could bring him to a vet to pet him to sleep. I just don't want him to go in a vets office. He's been my best friend for 8 years, and for much of that my only friend. When I had to give up the bar scene, most of the people I knew didn't want to have much to do with me. It can be hard to get bar flies off the stool. I knew he'd be there for me when I got home, and made an otherwise empty house inviting. Heck, he gave me a reason to come home at all. Now that I'm seeing someone, I feel guilty that I'm not there for him as much as he was for me.

I don't know what I'll do when he's gone. He's that dog. The one you'll always remember and compare all your future dogs to. I just wish I had a few more years left.

Terrik does live in China. Who knows what his rental agreement is.
Rental agreements, for the most part are similar in China as well. As TheHun pointed out, I couldnt rightfully bitch at the court for something like this, especially in Shanghai, but it would be too time consuming and would probably cost more than finding a hotel to stay at for the duration. Still, wasn't happy when I got home and saw how they tore it up, not to mention, I gotta get my personal stuff out of the living room and lock it up in another room. I don't trust the construction workers not to have sticky fingers. Kind of shitty of my landlord to pull this stunt.

Sounds exactly like he either no longer wants you there or he's trying to raise the rent on all his tenants.
Very likely. Originally my apartment was going to be 570 USD/month but I talked it down to 490 USD/month. Now he wants to jack it up to 680 USD/month. Since I got until next feb at this point, I'll likely move out before then, because there's no way I'm paying that, whether my house is directly next to the subway or not. Shanghai housing prices are skyrocketing and everyone is feeling the squeeze.

So a hailstorm just hit my area and all the driver's side of my car is pelted/scratched/damaged, my back lights are completely smashed and my car is now underneath a healthy pound of hail.

My insurance company/auto repair shop gonna love this....

Good lord. How big was the hail?

Shit, living is cheap there, in China.

Jesus Christ. That's one nice thing about living in Alberta. Yeah, it gets cold during the winter but we have almost no freak weather. It snows in the winter and rains in the spring, summer and fall and that's usually it. Edmonton had a nasty tornado 20 some years ago but it was a complete freak incident as tornadoes are not the norm up here.

Giant hail sounds like a huge pain in the ass.
